SMD's Post Game Thoughts (Preseason Week3)

Just a list of a few thoughts i jotted down during the game. Because sobriety allows me to do such things.

Star-divide

1. 1st team o-line looks good. False start by Carimi was ehh, but he is still a solid player.

2. Running back position is super dope. Deep. Forte is great, Bell is a hard runner, and Marion Barber is going to be solid. No Chester Taylor at all tonight.

3. Defense is not looking good against the run at all, and looks so-so against the pass. Maybe that'll change once they start deploying their actual Defensive scheme

4. Major Wright may suck... i still haven't decided yet.. He's missed two key tackles in two games. He needs to definitely step it up , or Conte will be breathing down his back for that starting job

5. Amobi Okoye is a beast. that is all.

6. Urlacher still making plays like it's the early 2000's

7. Roy E. Williams making a couple nice grabs. The one INT was odd. Couldn't tell if the defender tappe dit or not, still shouldn't have been thrown into coverage by Cutler.

8. Earl Bennet is solid and should really be looked at for the starter job.

9. Sanzenbacher makes the team easily. I feel bad for doubting the guy early on in training camp, he's really done well.

10. Special Teams (mainly kick coverage) looks terrible. Step it up.

And the team as a whole looks decent. Much better than last pre-season. this Bears team will win a few games this year, they just need to work on tightening things up before the season.

Any receiver not named Bennett

needs to go back to basic hands drills. Separation and Routes are there, and clean…but no one else could catch tonight. Its 1 pre-season game, got it, but I felt the same way at the end of week 2…Cutler putting balls in good spots, and guys just not making plays.

it did

but when a QB throws a ball into coverage and it hits his receiver in that hands, sometimes, its precision and okay to catch it.

this is why its tough to judge the preseason

if he’s practicing well (from what i’ve heard, he is), that might be the better indication. i mean, seriously, there is no reason to get hurt during a game that doesn’t count when you’re an established player in this league. of course, he might actually just be bad. hard to tell. that being said, knox definitely has improved his play.

Roy got both feet in on the exact same route Knox couldn’t get both feet in….

You can't make that comparison for the same reason you're cutting Williams some slack on the int.

The pass to Knox was in a place where it would have been tough to get both feet down and, according to the one replay, it looked like he did anyway. That wasn’t a misplay by the receiver alone, sideline plays have to be a perfect combination between QB and WR.

by BearFan611 on Aug 28, 2011 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Lol

The pass to Knox and the pass to Williams were the exact same play except on opposite sidelines. The ball was placed in the same place for both passes. Knox didn’t get his feet in, Williams did

So you'd be able to show the exact speed of the ball and the exact distance from the sideline

and the same relative spot it hit the receiver and on and on and on.

There is no way you, or anyone else can make a definitive statement like that. Absolutely impossible.

Sorry to burst your bubble...

Johnny Knox:
2009 45 rec 527 yards 5 TD’s
2010 51 rec 960 yards 5 TD’s
Total 96 rec 1,487 yds 10 TD’s Avg 15.49 yds per catch

Roy Williams:
2009 38 rec 596 yards 7 TD’s
2010 37 rec 530 yards 5 TD’s
Total 75 rec 1,126 yds 12 TD’s Avg 15.13 yds per catch

Also, Knox averaged 18.8 YPC last year and the highest Williams ever had in his career was 16.0, so outside of those 2 additional TD’s from 2 years ago, Knox has outperformed Williams the last two years.

by BearFan611 on Aug 28, 2011 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Lol you just proved my point

Knox has a whole 20 more catches than Williams did and only had about 300 yards more, and LESS tds? Plus Knox only had .36 more YPC than Williams.

Williams had more TDs last year than Knox, on less catches.
Williams also was the 3rd option last year, you have to remember that, and Knox was the 1st option.

How does having less yards and lesser YPC prove your point ?
His past 2 years stats are better than Knox’s past 2 years stats

My stats showed that you were wrong, period. Not an opinion, not a matter of my feelings, just plain fact. I didn’t make those up, you can go to Pro Football Reference and look them up for yourself. It also shows that Knox has improved from 2009 to 2010 where Williams got worse.

The only point I proved is that you refuse to accept any accountablilty for wrong statements even when the statistics prove you wrong. Do yourself a favor and just accept that, in this instance, you were wrong.

you’re probably one of the guys preaching Brandon Rideau as the Bears #1, or even Aromashodu.

Williams is a better route runner and red zone threat than Knox. Knox is absolutely invisible in the redzone.

O-line was great

Cutler may put up “Denver” numbers if the O-line does this well all season. Forte looks like a guy that the Bears better pay soon. WRs need to polish some things up but Bennett is playing like the classic “not fast, not spectacular, but win because of him” WR. But the offense is light years ahead of where it was this time last year or a month after for all that matters and we got to the NFC champ game

Defense is actually getting pressure but the line-backing core is of heavy concern. I just don’t trust Roach and if Briggs goes down we’re screwed and that puts more pressure on Major to make tackles. Okoye is a keeper and may actually give us Tommie production to go along with Peppers. But overall so far so good.

Not the pack's Jennings, meant our Jennings.

Not saying you have to follow a “he sucks” with PFF stats or anything but don’t get defensive when someone says “Roy Sucks” or someone that you like. It’s all just our opinion. Hanie had a pretty bad game with some passes he floated for reasons that escape me but I still like him as a player. If you think he sucks cause he threw an INT to BJ Radji then that’s your opinion as well.

And Tim Jennings is a baller, i’ve liked him, i just don’t think he’s starting caliber. He’s a good tackler, but i think he’s just not good enough to cover other teams #1s Especially not Megatron or Greg Jennings

Was the 12th ranked corner last year according to PFF....

While covering those #1s. He allowed all of .4 points in QBR over Tillman while allowing only 50.7% of targets thrown his way to be caught compared to Peanuts 64.9%. He gave up 2 TDs to Peanut’s 3. while facing Megatron, Jennings and the rest of the #1s.

I think people don’t realize the job Jennings quitely did last year. He put up better numbers, for the most part, in coverage than Tillman did, other than INTs.

Bennett was the target 7 times caught 6 for 89 yards
Sanzenbacher was the target 6 times caught 2 for 23 yards
Devin Hester was the target 4 times caught 2 for 31 yards
Johnny Knox was the target 4 times caught 1 for 21 yards

the only receiver that out played Roy Williams tonight was Earl Bennett and everyone did better than Johnny Knox

It's not just about stats...Ask Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd

It’s about the effectiveness of play. Williams was no where to be seen in game , dropped a big 3rd down catch in game 2, and had a dropped catch that resulted in an INT for Cutler yesterday. These are the specific reasons why he was brought in here…to make “those” catches. The difference is that Bennett is making those catches with regularity.

So unless Roy Williams is going to avg almost 20 yards per catch like Knox and be a homerun threat like Hester and Knox, he damn well better make to important catches and make plays easier for Cutler. That’s exactly what he isn’t doing. So all catches aren’t equal.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

Because I think Cromartie and Revis would beg to differ. I also think the Vikings would also differ with Hester and Knox not beating them either. But don’t take my word for it. Knox isn’t perfect, but there are some short memories around this place. That dude had big catches and big times that helped win games. And if he didn’t catch the ball, I’m sure opposing safeties worried enough about Hester and Knox’s game breaking ability to open up opportunities for Olsen, Forte, and Bennett.

Not at all

But assuming that for example 2 of 4 for 20 yards are by default more important say 1 of3 for 20 yards doesn’t tell the whole story. Especially if the first guy ran short of the first down marker on a 3rd 11 play for his second catch and the other guy caught an important first down to keep the chains moving.

Williams job is to catch 3rd downs, be a good blocker, and be a big target that makes it easier for Cutler right? Then what the hell does dropping 3rd down catches, not blocking down field on a big Forte run, and dropping a catch that results in a INT have to do with waiting for the regular season? Plus the fact that he hasn’t played well in camp AND the fact that he wiling admits that he didn’t have his “detail” down going into game 2.

Williams at this time is doing what he’s done the last 3 years and it’s why he was available in the first place. No one is piling on or making Knox out to be Jimmy Smith but we’re just pointing out that he’s right on schedule with the pattern he’s shown 2007. To this point, Knox career is in ascent and Williams is in descent. Those are just the facts. Hopefully both play better.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

the other guy only caught one pass all night!

but that catch was everything and Roy’s two catches were nothing This is why I stick up for the guy. He didn’t do anything right last night but he did as much as Hester and more than Knox. But Williams is a Martz stooge and deserves nothing but contempt no matter what.

by ed_brown on Aug 28, 2011 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

No.

You defend the guy because you like him as a player and that’s fine. But you,SMD, or any other fan don’t get to make up your own facts about what this guy is actually doing or not on the field. It really is wasted energy. Use this energy on rooting for Forte getting a new deserved contract or for Bennett to get more notoriety. But to use all of this energy on a guy that has done everything wrong since he signed his one year deal here is fruitless.

So far he’s proven his detractors right and that has everything to do with the preseason and camp. No he isn’t comparable to Hester because Hester had a great camp. No he isn’t comparable to Knox because Knox came to camp in shape and ready to play. So even if everything in game 3 is equal, Roy Williams still doesn’t equal what Knox and Hester have done to this point in 2011.

Both of those players are more valuable than Roy Williams. Knox has been better than him the last two years and Hester is already a HOFer at one role and a contributor in another so what are we really talking about here? Yes it was wrong for Martz to diss Knox for the betterment of “his” guy and it’s another example of why he can’t get another Head coaching job and is on a one year deal himself. Both he and Williams have that in common.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Aug 28, 2011 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

get your facts straight

Hester is not a HOF receiver
Knox is not a probowl receiver
Williams was the #3 receiver and scored as many TD’s as Knox or Hester as our @1 and #2 receiver.
those are facts as well. You say Williams has done everything wrong since he came to Chicago, how do you get to pass a judgement like that? The preseason is the time to get ready for the real season and game 3 is the most important preseason game. In that game Williams was as good as Hester or Knox and that is a fact as well. Williams has much better red zone stats than Hester or Knox who disappear in the red zone and that is a fact as well. maybe there is something wrong with your logic if you think a receiver with limited skills deserves more respect than an Offensive Coordinator with a Superbowl ring.

I am a Bennett fan, you throw him the ball and he catches it and he can run all the routes, and has about the same speed as Larry Fitzgerald.

Umm...I could of swore I said...
Hester is already a HOFer at one role and a contributor in another

. That would mean HOFer at returner and contributor at WR. Also I don’t remember calling Knox a pro bowler either.

Williams has done everything wrong because A.) He’s didn’t come in shape B.) He wasn’t prepared for games 1 or 2 of the pre-season C.) He hasn’t had a good training camp. So how about you go ahead and tell me what he’s done right? Not a rhetorical question..I really want to know.

Finally, Game 3 in a dress rehearsal for the season, it isn’t the game where guys decide they can finally show their worth. It’s the reason Williams is getting slammed to this point by the media and fans alike. I don’t care what his numbers were in Dallas, he lost his starting job to a FA pickup who wanted more and got outplayed by a rookie who wouldn’t grab his pads so stop acting like what he did in Dallas was of value. It wasn’t. He was a huge failure there and not worth the haul Dallas gave up for him. It’s why he’s 29 and on a 1 year deal and a Bear.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

well he didn’t get out played by DH or JK Saturday night. So are they must be huge failures

A) He didn’t miss any of the camp due to showing up out of shape, this is just people taking one of his statements out of context and making a big deal out of it.

B)He only played the same amount Jay did in game 1 & 2 which wasn’t very much and only had a couple of passes thrown his way you could say the same about anyone on the 1st team I consider this reason nothing more than hot air.

C) You say he hasn’t had a good training camp, I just don’t recognize you as a reliable source of information.

by the numebrs....

1. I agree, surprisingly.

2. Makes you wonder about the reports that said Taylor will make the team, doesn’t it?

3. I think the real key here is the missing AA and LB. I’ve said it over and over, AA is the most under-rated DT in the league because he doesn’t get those flashy sacks, but he’s the reason the Bears gave up the fewest line yards between the guards last year.

4. thought the same thing. I wasn’t impressed, but one game doesn’t make a player. He;d better step it up soon, though.

5. In pass rushing situations, I agree. Against the run, not so much.

6. I was completely disappointed in ’Lach’s coverage. He really dipped in his coverage skills last year, and I see no signs of him jumping back to normal so far. That’s not to say that he’s horrible in coverage now, but he isn’t the same guy he was even in 2008.

7. I thought it was odd that Roy got all the blame for that, too. Though, in the end, he should have held on to the damned ball. If he had, we’d all have been talking about Cutler squeezing the ball in like a master.

8. I like Earl better in the slot against lesser coverage guys. I think it makes the best use of his abilities.

9. I’ll believe that Sanzen bacher isnt the next Brandon Rideau/Mike Haas/Eric Peterman when he actually makes the team. Until then, I don’t assume any UDFA rookie WR will in any year.

10. Agreed. STs have been uncharacteristically bad all the way around. Makes you wonder if the loss of Davis, Wolfe and Manning is affecting this unit.

Are any of our DTs truly "starting caliber"?

I’m talking about true 3-down any situation DT that both disrupts and takes up space. I don’t think such a DT exists on this roster.

What we’ve got is a bunch of players that excel in a few roles, but are decidedly average (at best) at others. Even the vaunted AA is generally regarded as more of a bruiser and space-eater than a true disruptor.

Those types of DTs have been being weeded out of the league in favor of specialists for a while.

There are still a few running around, but not many. And they cost a LOT.

Kevin Williams... Suh...

uhm..uhm… Kyle Williams…

There are VERY few of those “every down” type DTs in the league…totally agree.. more teams are moving towards the rotational aspect of dline play

Does it help him any when someone like Marcus Harrison gets paired with him?

I feel he ain’t the best against the run by a long shot, but is certainly better than Marcus Harrison. Pair Okoye with Melton (who also seems rather good against the run) and with Briggs and Urlacher backing him up, watch him shine.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 30, 2011 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree.

Harrison has little to do with Okoye being blocked out of the play all by himself. Sorry, but Adams spent plenty of time paired with Harrison and never showed the same inconsistency in ’09 or ’10. And Toeaina too.

If you want to sell out againstthe pass, then having Okoye in there with Melton is great. If you want to sell out against the run, throw in Toe and Adams. But the best starting lineup for this team, if your not selling out, would be Melton and Adams. Okoye has no business as anything but a rotational tackle at this point. Adams is a far better overall DT. The Bears would be stupid to sit him for Okoye.

I like Amobi and I think he was a great pickup, but he shouldn’t even be considered to start. There is more to defense than rushing the passer. If you can’t stop the run, your pass rush becomes pretty useless.

I disagree

I think he has a lot of work to do against the run. I am still pumped he is here just run support is not his strong suit.

I feel his consistency problems are due to being paired with Marcus Harrison each time he gets put out there

But nonetheless he has some work to do, just not nearly as much as Harrison needs.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 30, 2011 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I feel like the Harrison argument is a copout.

We’re not talking about Harrison being blocked into him. We’re talking about Okoye getting lost, which has absolutely nothing to do with who’s being teamed with him. Either you can defend the run, or you can’t. Most of the time, Okoye can’t.

Then he’ll have one of those mind-boggling good plays against the run, but even those tend to come as a second effort after initially losing the battle at the line.

Marcus Harrison can be blamed for a lot for a lot of things, but not Amobi getting blocked out of the box on run plays. That’s on him whether it’s Melton or Harrison by his side. And let’s not kid ourselves. he saw plenty of time lined up next to Melton this week and still looked like crap against the run.

Hey I didn't think Okoye looked that bad

Just need consistancy from him. And I know it’s bad to lose the battle, but aren’t we looking for a player who will give you a second effort?

I guess for right now, keep him as a rotational player. But, I also feel he can be a quality start down the road.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 30, 2011 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He didn't look horrible....against second string blockers.

But when he’s een in with first stringers, he has been beaten consistently. Second efforts are great. He put in a nice one in week 2 that I actually wrote about. But that great second effort limited the rusher to just 7 yards on the play. That’s what happens when it comes down to second effort on a DT. Limiting, rather than stopping. After that play, Chicago had to adjust the linebackers to make up for Okoye. We al know how that turned out, right?

The Texans released him for this reason. He was good against the pass in Houston. But he couldn’t do crap against the run. He hasn’t shown that this has changed and he forces the defense to adjust to cover him in rushing situations, which leaves the team vulnerable to the pass.

If he starts, the teams pass protection suffers as much as the run because of this. Okoye should be rotated in when the Bears need a pass rush. But if he has to be adjusted for on a play, then he shouldn’t be involved in the play to start with.

And rather than reply to every Tom, Dick and Harry on here....my take on Williams, Bennett, Hester, and Knox.

Everyone is jumping up and down about Bennett in the preseason. Does everyone also realize that the preseason receiving leaders from the last 7 years didn’t make the team?

I like Bennett a lot. But he’s playing out of the slot, not facing the top corner from the X position. Can we be real about what he’s doing for just a second? He’s making the tough catches across the middle and doing it like there is no tomorrow. But, again, he’s not facing the top corners. He’s facing nickles and safeties, for the most part. Again, I like Bennett (probably more than any other receiver on the roster) but he’s an ideal slot the way he is playing. There is nothing saying that he gets that type of production at the X or Y position.

Williams isn’t exactly looking good. But then, it’s the preseason. He’s been targeted 7 times. It’s not like he’s making great use of those targets though either. But then, he also has to build timing with Cutler and learn Cutler’s throwing speed, which I don’t believe he’s used to yet. He seems to be clasping his hands late.

Which brings up another point. Drops. A drop is recorded officially when a pleyr stops the forward progress (stops, not slows) of a reasonably catchable pass but fails to hold on to the ball. If a pass sails through Roy Williams hands and bounces of his helmet, it is not a recordable drop. If he tips a ball, it is also not a recordable drop. If people are going to keep assessing them as such, then they need to go back and assess those drops officially to all players, not just Williams. Otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges unfairly and inaccurately.

None the less, Williams has been uninspiring so far.It may be just the preseason, but you would think that a new player on a team he joined in an attempt to redeem himself would want to start out on fire, not lolligag around like it doesn’t matter, preseason or not. Williams needs to get over himself and quit acting like he has nothing to prove. He must prove everything after disappointing for years now.

On to Knox. Johnny has done absolutely nothing to get his starting spot back. In fact, I think he’s done more to prove he doesn’t belong in the X or Y spots. “But, He works so hard!” And? So did Davis, and yet every year the majority of Fans wanted him gone. He was a starter at one point too and was demoted for dropping fewer passes than Knox and without leading the league INT targets. Yet nobody was up in arms when the Bears didn’t resign him. Nobody was shaking their fists at his demotion. Yet he was a hard worked and according to Hester and Knox, a good veteran leader who wore his Bears pride on his sleeve (or head, whichever). Knox is really fast. Yea for him. But until he can prove that he can run a route, create separation and hold onto the ball consistently, he has no place starting for any team.

As far as Hester goes, He better start showing something too. He’s getting seperation and he’s running pretty good routes, but his reception attempts remind me a lot of some of his early muffs. Like he’s trying to take off before he has the ball by the handle. He fixed that in the return game, can he fix it in the receiving game? Can he slow himslef down when the footsteps are closer than they are in the punt return and kick return game? God, I hope so.

So far the only receiver on the team that I am honestly impressed with is Bennett, and I hope he gets some starting reps in week 4 against first team opposition. I think the Bears need to know if he can perform as well against the starting corners as he does against the lesser coverage backs. Everyone keep talking about his speed, but he’s faster and plays faster than Jerry Rice ever did (Rice ran 4.7 at the NFL combine, though he handled pads better than most receivers and loss less speed from them). I’m certainly not saying that he is Jerry Rice, but what I am saying is that Rice is evidence that speed is only one part of the game. Bennett will never be Rice, but he certainly can use the skills he has to overcome his less than ideal speed.
