Football's Back Baby!:SMD's Post Game Report (Week1)

The Falcons came in to town as the favorites by every Main Stream Media source, including most Chicago media sources. The Bears won the game 30-12, and if you scroll down you'll get my post game analysis.

Key Players

Cutler  22/32  312yds 2tds 1int

Forte   16at/68yds 0tds_5rec 90yds 1td_158 total yards

Bell 10att/24yds 0tds

Hester 3rec 60yds (should have been 1td)

Knox 3rec 60yds

Williams 4rec 55yds

Urlacher 10 tackles, 1 fumble rec, 1 int, def TD

Player of the game

I'm going to give this to a few different people. I believe on defense the whole defensive line (including rotating player) deserves the game ball here. They put enough pressure on Ryan to cause him into making some mistakes. On offense clear up until the Jay Cutler INt, i was going to give the game ball to him, however, that INT turned me away from that and I am giving the offensive game ball to Matt Forte

My honorable mentions would be Henry Melton on defense and Roberto Garza on offense.

This game came right down to what everyone expected it would, the battle in the trenches. the Bears dominated the LOS the entire game. They came out to stop the deep pass, and they did just that. The Bears allowed too many yards on the ground, but when a team commits to stopping the pass like they did, they will give up more on the ground. Henry Melton, Amobi Okoye, and Julius Peppers all had sacks. Peppers and Melton had 2 apiece. Brian Urlacher showed that he is still a game changer at MLB and should still be considered a top 1 or 2 LB in the league. On offense the quick start really impressed me. Roy Williams showed up to play and went out and did what he was expected to do. Johnny Knox had a couple very nice catches, but also gets credited with a drop, but he still played a solid game. Matt Forte needs paid. Please.

Play Of The Game

I had this between three different plays. Urlacher's INT, the Pep/Lach fumble TD, and Hesters 53yd screen play. I'm going to have to give it to the Hester screen play because it fully shows that Devin Hester can be a legit WR in this offense if he gets the right looks. He's still ridiculous and deserves credit for what he is in this offense. A legit WR.

That's a good question

I, for one, believe we live in a country where it’s encouraged to ask questions, because without a question there would just be an answer, and an answer without a question, is just a statement.

That INT

only came around because it was batted around twice and still caught. That’s harsh…

If he takes a sack, he gets roasted for holding on the ball too long.

If he tries to throw it away, he gets blamed for not taking the sack. Can’t win either way.

Bears looked dominant against the Falcons

Cutler, the o-line, and of course the defense reminded the NFL that they were the division winner last year by the statement game. I didn’t expect the Bears to handle the Falcons, but they did just that. How good is the NFC South when all 4 teams lost their opener and 3 of them lost to the NFC North?

Vikings looked exactly like I expect them to look, which is nothing short of unspectacular. McNabb is washed up and the rookie Ponder is too raw. Don’t see them out of the basement this year.

Lions looked great as well. Stafford finished the game with a 112 something qb rating, 305 yds and 3 TD’s. The defense gave up 1 touchdown all game and limited Blount to 15yds on 5 carries.
This game should’ve been a blowout since the Lions dominated the line of scrimmage most of the game.

This division is definitely the best in the NFL and I could see a 3 team playoff run this season. Packers, Bears, and Lions all looked great in their season opener with strong quarterback play and a great defensive stand. Its early, but as of right now I truly feel like this division is wide open outside of Minnesota. I can’t decide who has the best chance to win because they are all 3 worthy of winning it.

This season is gonna be a good one!

Thank you tfrabotta

I appreciate the congrats and congrats to all of the Bears fans on the spanking they handed Atlanta. Bears, Packers, and Lions all looked like division winners Sunday and this 3 way battle is just starting.

Each team has weapons and a apparently good defense. I wouldn’t want to play any of these 3 teams if I were in the NFL.

Its so nice to be proud of my Lions and have a team that can actually compete for a playoff spot/division title. Its been so long so we Lions fans had any reason to be proud. With a healthy dose of Stafford to Johnson on a consistent basis, I think the times of old are history.

Until October 10th, good luck this Sunday Bears fans.

Btw, anybody see that 41-7 spanking the Bills gave the next team on our schedule in Kansas City no less? No Eric Berry either since he’s out for the season. I smell a blowout.

nfc north

i see it coming down to either the bears or lions for the div title. i am not disrespecting the pack, but i do not think their D has that bite the bears and lions have

Win a super bowl,

get healthy, put up 42 points in the opening week, and still get no respect.

You don’t really need a defense when you can put up points like that. Most teams they play aren’t as good as the Saints are, so they won’t need 40+ to win.

not gonna lie

thats absolute crap to say that he should have taken a sack, because it could have been stripped, he could have fumbled it, they could have crushed him and injured him.
He did what he could while Webb let the rusher totally collapse the pocket, that pick is not on Jay one bit.

Forte gets a game ball because of one well set up screen, while Cutler played LIGHTS OUT?
man, i’d hate to play for your team

No, he should have fallen down and let them touch him down.

I would rather him take a sack than thrown it into a defender

Hester is a still basically a gimmick WR

there are a few plays that he is perfect for, like the screen pass, where his running with the ball skills are emphasized and not his dubious route running catch the ball in traffic skills. They used Hester very effectively. He was in on KO and punt returns where he is most useful, and in pass plays where his skills are best showcased.

Finally, Forte gets the game ball? Really. So many other players played so much better … Urlacher, Melton, Peppers, Tillman, and Cutler.

Here's my reasoning behind not giving Cutler the game ball

twice he threw the ball right to Grimes and twice it was tipped and nearly picked. Had Decoud been better at doing his job it would’ve been picked twice, once in the end zone. and on the pick Cutler shouldn’t have tried to force a pass. Other than that he played great. Plus the over throw of wide open Kellen Davis. He’s got to execute that play

So you and trent dilfer count imaginary interceptions? Almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Chill meatball

I was simply implying that Cutler forced too many passes for my liking. He didn’t deserve the game ball, because he forced too many passes. Forte deserved the game ball in my post. If you think Cutler deserved the game ball, how about you make a post about Cutler getting your game ball.

I'm not a meatball and I could care less who you gave your game balls too

I am sick and tired of people when they discuss cutler talking about how many interceptions he almost threw for. Either a guy on the other team caught the ball or he didn’t. Every time Cutler has a good game I hear trent dilfer or some other talking head say things like “… yeah but he almost threw three picks today.” How many almost interceptions did aaron rodgers have or matt ryan or Drew Brees? We don’t know because nobody ever talks about other quarterbacks almost interceptions it seems to be a jay cutler only statistic.

LMFAO

My problem was that he threw the ball into coverage! That shouldn’t happen! Period. IDC if the receiver would’ve caught them for touchdowns! i still would be saying how he shouldn’t have thrown them into coverage! CHILL OUT

That's a risk he can take

I’m not too upset about those, as the way I remember it was 1- Single Coverage, and 2- man coverage, if I’m not mistaken. Both instances were good playes by the cornerback, and you have to take those risks sometimes. As for throwing into triple coverage (Although we haven’t seen any so far =D), that’s a different story.

Grimes came over Hester's back for that ball

Maybe Hester should jump up for it since it was right to him? The throw was there if he jumps for the ball to shield the defender the worst he gets is first and goal at the one.

I don't think that was a force pass but more of a great play on the ball by Grimes.

Hester shield his body and everything, but Grimes was still able to go over Hester’s shoulder and make a play.
