Ask Canal Street Chronicles: Is It Sunday Yet? Edition

Bears @ Saints. Big game. Bears clobbered the Falcons (Thank you so much for that by the way). Saints lost on the goal line to the Packers.

Ask Questions, they get answered yada yada. You know what to do.

My apologies for the lack of...aloofness put into this post. I'm really freakin tired and can't wait for the weekend if for no other reason than to get more than 5 hours of sleep.

But please, ask any questions you have about the Saints and I (or someone smarter than me) may answer.

*Please rec this post to make sure it stays up until gameday.*

Welcome, etc. I’ll try to moderate out any of our people that are jerks. Granted, I’ll moderate out your jerks, too, but whatevs.

We know Olin Kreutz, and in particular, we know his deficiencies, probably better than anyone else anywhere ever. Are you concerned about the offensive line, or do you think they’ll be fine?

Also, and this is something Bears fans are familiar with, a lack of pressure by the front four, and I noticed that your DB’s were playing long off the ball in short yard situations (10 yards off on 3rd and 7, for example). Should Cutler spend all week practicing slant passes with Knox and Hester, or do you think those issues will clear themselves up after a week of shaking the rust off?

Took the 'G' out your waffle, all you got left is your Ego.

Thanks.

Most people who particpate in these are good people. So you shouldn’t have a problem with anybody.

A lot of my worries about the Packers game I’m very unsure about. Was our O-line just that crappy, or was BJ Raji just that beasty? Possibly a mix of both, but the “best guard tandem in the league” sucked massively on the line and they need to step up during the Bears game. Especially considering how much Matt Ryan was disrupted.

Secondary looked like they were blowing assignments. As the commentators pointed out, they were playing off coverage on a fake blitz…on third down. There were some guys in man, others in zone. Guys were covering the turf when they were supposed to be covering Greg Jennings. It was just poor effort all around. So I’m going to say that it’s a coaching problem, and will be better by the time you guys show up. Hopefully.

Will Drew Brees

be able to complete passes to guys that nobody has ever heard of? Will he have to? Colston out. Moore’s status in doubt. Henderson, Meachem, and who else?

Adrian Arrington, possibly Courtney Roby if it gets that desperate.

I think Moore will likely be back. He not playing was a shocker, and was very unexpected. So to not play two weeks in a row means that the injury is likely worse than the coaches are letting on.

However, if the Saints WR problem do get that bad, I’d expect a lot more 2 TE sets and 2 backs who can catch the ball.

I think Lance Moore was kept out last week just to be extra careful.

He actually practiced some the week before the game but they didn’t want any set backs before he was 100%. Expect Arrington and Roby to pick up some of the slack from the Colston lose and Sean may activate Joique Bell at RB. We are pretty deep right now a RBs who can also receive.

Malcolm Jenkins, Malcolm Jenkins, and Malcolm Jenkins

Possibly Roman Harper, if he isn’t asked to cover a TE or cover anything for that matter.

Alex Brown sucked. He rarely showed up on any stat sheet, got little pressure, and was only useful on running downs. Cameron Jordan has taken over his job seamlessly (and by seamlessly, I mean we aren’t sure if he’s even playing out there).

I was a minority here last season

when I said it was a good move to cut Brown. I was happy, even though I loved the guy, but he’s never been a difference maker and age definitely caught up with him. A perfect example of his decline was the awful tackle attempt on Beast Mode during that fateful (for the Saints) run.

Your TE was a beast in that Falcons game.

So I hope GW makes some other adjustment other than Roman Harper to cover him. Wasn’t real impressed with our D in general, but we are missing Will Smith for this game also, and we have a lot of new pieces that have to find their place. Our supposed good secondary was exposed last week, abet against a very good GB. Hopefully Tracy Porter will be back at his normal spot rather than P Rob. That said they all need to learn how to wrap up for the tackle. Malcom Jenkins is our best secondary player at the safety position right now, but some pressure on the QB would help all of the secondary.

Random side note,

I’m not going to be able to make a corresponding post on CSC this week, as I won’t have computer access between tomorrow night and game-time (thus making it, on my end, kinda assbagish, not participating in my own post). So if anyone else is interested, go for it!

Now actual question-askings. With the Saints featuring a Gregg Williams 3-4 defense, and knowing how the Bears struggled with these attacking schemes, should we be encouraged that no one had more than six sacks last season on the Saints roster, and who does Williams have that’s most effective in a blitz role?

GW actually runs multiple defensive schemes.

We are primarily 4-3 with some 3-4 thrown in and a whole lot of Blitz. Sometimes too much blitz. We still need to be able to harass the QB without depending solely on the Blitz. Especially against QB’s that get rid of the ball quickly and can make you pay if you can’t cover. I have a counter question. Was Cutler’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly last week a result of his increased grasp of the Martz O-Scheme, or because of Atlanta’s weaknesses? Hears hoping the latter!

INGRAMANIA equals LOMBARDI 2012

The answer is
Was Cutler’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly last week a result of his increased grasp of the Martz O-Scheme, or because of Atlanta’s weaknesses? Hears hoping the latter!

Kind of both. He had protection, for the most part, which is something we had kind of forgotten existed here. Additionally, it seemed that he not only knew where his receivers would be—he was reading the defense more

That’s a big key-if he knows not only that his guys will actually be where they should (Sort of a problem for Knox last year), but where the defense is, the sky truly is the limit for Jay Cutler.

He is from Chicago but lives here in AR. We were liking that they addressed the O-line some, or started to anyway, but yeah that sure helps your QB out. Hopefully ours will come together. We have some new players on the line also. Drew was getting hit too much last week also. Fortunately he is one of the best at getting rid of the ball quickly.

I actually haven't seen anyone ask this yet

WHY IS THE BALL NOT IN DREW BREES’ HANDS AT THE END OF THE GAME?

You’ve shown little to no push up the middle, and you’re not creating much in the way of running lanes. Then everyone comes in a Jumbo formation, and the TE and tackles seem overwhemed by the linebackers and defensive backs being lined up right across from them.

Seriously, what gives?

Millions of people are asking that same question. Bad call by Sean Payton. And to put it on the line like that on your rookie RB? It was a heck of a game though.

That's interesting. You know what makes me sad? YOU DO!!! Maybe we should chug on over to mambypandyland...or maybe we can find some self confidence for you YA JACKWAGON!!!!!!

That's been the story of the week.

Payton made 2 bad calls at crucial moments. It happens. Nothing we can really do about it now except hope he learned his lesson.

Yep

The entire Packer defense bailed out on that play. I was hoping to see a PA fake and dump to Graham or another TE.

I gotta ask: How is Olin Kreutz working out for you guys?

has he made your O-line better or worse than last year’s?

So far ok. Just have to see if he can remain consistent

Let's put it this way

He was the best pass protector last year, on a line full of shitty pass protectors. He also won’t get you a ton of push up the middle for runs. Probably better to off tackle.

Would you consider Kreutz an upgrade or downgrade?

Why did you guys get rid of them?

I wish I knew. I have to assume it was a money issue.

Would you consider Kreutz an upgrade or downgrade?
At the moment I would say downgrade. I noticed Brees having trouble with his snaps from the shotgun during the Packers game. I also didn’t see him getting ANY push on running plays. I’m guessing this is why you guys let him walk.

Pretty much, although Kreutz is a Bears legend

looking at the film from last year it was apparent he is past his prime and was one of the problems with our line last season. I think the Bears wanted him back more for his leadership skills than actual ability.

I think we got lucky in letting him go, our line is clearly better without him.

by Gaak on Sep 15, 2011 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Good luck with the shotgun things.

That was never Kreutz’s strong suit.

Yup

Shotgun snap was never a big part of any playbook recently, and Olin struggled with them anyway, he’s a great leader, but the player that he once was is gone

Will he have trouble covering Davis on those seam routes. He seemed to have a really, really bad game in coverage versus Finely. Albeit, Kellen isn’t anywhere near the talent Jermichael is.

Any chance that a certain team

from a certain city with a certain coach could replicate the 39 -14 beatdown from the 2006 NFC championship game????

Sure.

However, a certain offense is better than a certain offense from 2006. As is a certain defense, and a certain coach. As well, the playing conditions are the polar opposite. In the Southern heat of the Louisiana Superdome instead of the Brutal winter of Chicago.

I’m about to head out for the weekend. It was a lot of fun hanging out with you guys this week. It’s going to be a hell of a game. I hope no players get hurt. I know a bunch of NO fans are still upset about how we were treated a few years ago. I pray the Saints fans can treat your fans with respect and make it through the game with no violence. I’ll see you guys next week however the game ends.
Peace out, chumps. ;p
