The salt and pepper that Cutler needs.

2011 was a failure of a year for the Chicago Bears. Of course for me it was a great year. I finally found a website that allows me to share the thing that I love, writing about football. I have gained so much confidence from WCG and I cannot wait to continue my path of righteousness through 2012.

To start off 2012 I would love to talk about the WR spot. I have posted a total of two articles dedicated to the WR corps. I want expand the horizon of the WR corps with integrating draft picks.

The most popular guy has been VJax (Vincent Jackson). I understand why you would want to settle with him because I also wouldn’t mind him being a Bear. But there is still a huge chance that he will not sign with the Bears.

Of course there is still a great WR that the Bears can still possibly draft within the NFL Draft. His name is Michael Floyd. There is a strong possibility that Michael Floyd will be available when we are ready to pick mostly because Justin Blackmon will be in front of him. If we do in fact draft Floyd, Cutler will possibly be amazing next year. What Cutler has been missing is a true #1 receiver. Since Cutler left the Denver Broncos Cutler has seized all the pro bowl looks of himself. The cause of that is when he was traded he was taken from a great WR in Brandon Marshall to Devin Hester, which speaks for itself. But of course this year Cutler has revived that pro bowl look to himself and has even created a new different QB in the making, even without a true #1 receiver. Of course with a little salt and pepper from Michael Floyd, Cutler will finally bring back that 4,000 yard QB that he once was.

But of course nothing does go as planned and there always has to be a back-up plan. Thanks to a 6’4 230lb guy that goes by the name Alshon Jeffery. Jeffery will be able to bring that height that Cutler really likes. With that Cutler just might become that 4,000 yard QB that he once was.

I hope everyone has a great new year. Please comment and like always answer the poll.

Floyd

Is he worth a top-15 pick? Not sure about his work ethic and issues off the field.

I like the size of Jeffery; did he get hurt this season? Looks like his production fell off quite a bit.

Floyd has looked remarkable at times

But his past is rather shady, and his injury history could haunt him in the future. He finished the year healthy, but at times during the bowl game he dissapeared. Rather, during some of the biggest games of his career, he failed to produce.

If he falls to us in the 2nd round, then hell yea I’d take Michael Floyd. But, if you’re suggesting we take him in the 1st round, I’d be a bit more hesitant. Afterall, receivers have the highest bust % out of any other position selected in the 1st round.

Where to start?
But his past is rather shady,

A couple of drinking related issues. He owned up to his last transgression and has been sparkling. I doubt character will be a problem.

and his injury history could haunt him in the future. He finished the year healthy, but at times during the bowl game he dissapeared.

Actually he did get hurt in the bowl game (late 3Q) and though he returned, he did not look anything close to 100%. His penchant for injury is concerning, much more so than character. Blaming Floyd for disappearing in the bowl game this year is remarkable. Did you see their QB play? Also, the injury probably played a part in his lack of 4Q productivity.

Rather, during some of the biggest games of his career, he failed to produce.

Can you name a player who did not “disappear” in a game over his career? You might want to scale your expectations back a bit.

If he falls to us in the 2nd round, then hell yea I’d take Michael Floyd. But, if you’re suggesting we take him in the 1st round, I’d be a bit more hesitant.

On this we agree. He does not seem to be a can’t miss kind of receiver you would use a 1st round pick on, but if he is there in the 2nd round, absolutely consider it. He has size, enough speed, great hands, and seems to have a knack to make plays.

Afterall, receivers have the highest bust % out of any other position selected in the 1st round.

Do they? Is there a site where that is documented? Not being sarcastic, I wonder if you have a source to back what you are saying. If you do, I would like to see it, as it would be interesting.

Too bad I can't post links with my iPhone

It was also discussed during the draft last year as it aired live on ESPN. Now, in saying that over the past 2 years teams have generally hit with their receiver from the 1st round.

He did have a bad bowl game

I was pretty disappointed. I watched the Baylor game and I was impressed with Wright. I think we have to take a risk on a receiver with our first pick.

Maybe there's a knock-on effect he's experiencing

Ya know, hanging out with quality Bears fans has made him kinder to stray dogs or more respectful of senior citizens and that sort of thing.

It could happen!!!

We need at least 2 quality receivers.

I would like one through free agency and at least one through the draft. WR is our biggest weakness. If we dont start giving our qb weapons, we might as well trade Cutler and continue to throw all our money at an aging defense and hope we pitch shutouts against Green Bay and Detroit 4 times a year.

by Ryan21 on Jan 1, 2012 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

either one FA and one draftee, or possibly two FAs, but they need two. Bennett is the 3rd receiver (where he belongs) and let the rest duke it out for the remaining spots.

I say we get Colston from New Orleans

in FA if they let him go. He is that bug target guy that goes up and fights for the ball when its thrown his way. We already have receivers with speed, we need a guy to run precise routes and go get the ball.

If Jeffery comes to us in the draft we should take him immediately get ready to watch our offense put up big numbers. Colston, Bennett, Jeffery, D18, Knox and Hester (on occasion) looks like a pretty good receiving corp for me.

I hope a good receiver last til our pick.

We would be picking a lot higher had we lost today. Idk if Jeffery or Floyd will be there when we pick.

almost 8 spots higher. ridiculous. we should have tossed the game.

Too many good receivers in FA to not spend our first pick on o-line

Peter Konz, Riley Reiff, Barrett Jones, David DeCastro. Those are the names I’d like to hear

That's too bad

I thought he would be a good pick, a slight reach but nothing wild. It’s hard to say now what will happen in the draft, but it looks guys like Riley Reiff and Jonathan Martin will be drafted before us, so there’s not really a first round tackle we can get.

I seriously doubt the Bears spent a first on an offensive linemen.

I know plenty will say they snould (and I will disagree) but it’s neither here nor their. I can’t see Angelo dropping a first round pick on the line two seasons in a row, especially with the youth currently on the line and the age of the defense.

They'll pick a defensive end in the first round.

Oddly enough, it seems like a good idea. We need an awesome pass rusher opposite Peppers.

Draft defensive end and wide receiver in the first and second...

Assuming that there is one available that isn’t a reach and that the Bears don’t luck into another player who inexplicably slides down the draft from another position.

What Fitzgerald has done has been incredible.

Anyone that can make that many great plays with such a horrible QB group is incredible. Also on top of all of that he is a great guy. He does great in interviews and on the time he has free he doesn’t go to clubs and start fights. Everywhere you look at him he is the exact player you want on your team.

Most amazing part is that he had a bruised lung during that game and he was coughing up blood on the sideline sometime during the 3rd or 4th quarter

Still came back in the game.

There would be riots out here in the Desert if the Cardinals ever let him leave.

Why not trade up for Blackmon?

The guy commands the ball and looks the part of a T.O./Boldin hybrid.

Look at what Atlanta gave up for Julio Jones last year:

In exchange for getting the sixth pick, Atlanta gave the Browns five – five! – draft picks: their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.
http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/feed/2011-01/2011-nfl-draft/story/falcons-trade-up-for-julio-jones-in-draft-shocker-with-browns

The Bears have the 19th, 50th, 72nd, 81st, 114th, 146th, 178th, and 210th picks (two 3rd Rounders in 72 & 81).

Why not build a trade around the Julio Jones trade and move up and get this guy? He’s better than Julio, has avoided the injury bug, and not to mention Johnny Knox possibly never being the same. Make the move & trade up for a franchise WR!

by Bear_Down on Jan 3, 2012 12:23 AM CST reply actions

If they're going to commit that much to a WR, I'd rather it be someone of VJax or Bowe's caliber.

Use the draft picks on other needs and get someone who has played a lot of NFL snaps.

Im cool with Bowe,

But Jackson is pushing 30 and would only be worth holding on to for a couple of years. Id much rather draft a top notch young reciever who can spend the next 4 or 5 years building a relationship with Cutler.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

The only thing I have to object to that trade is don't trade our 3rd round pick.

The Bears have had a lot of luck in the 3rd round over the years so why not try and keep at least one 3rd round pick.
Of course the Bears have a GM that doesn’t do anything to big like a trade like this. I would never see Angelo trading more then 2 draft picks.
By the SB Nation mock draft the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to pick Michael Floyd so there is a very, very small chance that the Bears will be able to even think about picking him.

I completely agree.

While others do not, I would easily trade our 1st, extra 3rd and next rounds 1st for Blackmon, He is an absolute beast and def proven that he will not be a bust. Blackmon is better than Green,Bryant, and Crabtree coming out of the last couple of drafts. Im all for it
