Bears Down Vikings 17-13, End Season 8-8

And that does it for the Chicago Bears' 2011-2012 season.

Things seemed like they'd go the way of the prior five games, as the Vikings charged out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter behind a Ryan Longwell field goal and a Percy Harvin touchdown run. Roy Williams picked up a touchdown catch early in the second quarter, and Charles Tillman picked off Christian Ponder the very next drive for a touchdown of his own.

After heading into the half with the Bears leading 14-13, the Vikings started getting to Josh McCown even more as Jared Allen set the Vikings' single season sack record with 22, a half-sack within Michael Strahan's record. But the Bears' defense played just strong enough and Julius Peppers blocked another Longwell attempt, and DJ Moore intercepted Joe Webb in the final minute to seal it.

Quick, victorious numbers after the jump.

Star-divide

Josh McCown: 15/25, 160 yards, TD, INT - 75.4 rating

Kahlil Bell: 17 rushes, 54 yards, fumble
Roy Williams: 4 receptions, 60 yards, TD
Brian Urlacher: 10 tackles
Charles Tillman: 6 tackles, INT TD
Israel Idonije: 2 TFL, sack

Joe Webb: 17/32, 200 yards, 2 INT - 46.4 rating
Christian Ponder: 4/10, 28 yards, INT - 8.3 rating

Toby Gerhart: 15 rushes, 67 yards
Percy Harvin: 10 receptions, 115 yards; 5 rushes, 13 yards, TD
Jared Allen: 5 tackles, 3.5 sacks
Chad Greenway: 8 tackles, sack

Time of Possession: MIN 31:14 / CHI 28:46

Wonder if Lovie would have tried McCown sooner

…if he hadn’t had his contract extension.

(or if not mcCown, then at least Something other than Hanie)

Jay Cutler is our quarterback, baby! Please pass the nitroglycerin tablets.

I swear if Josh McCown was ready to start earlier

We may be in the playoffs. He has played rather well in his 2 starts with a 1-1 record. In half as many starts, McCown has a better passer rating, compleation %, and more wins than Hanie had in all 4 of his starts (0-4).

Now then… 10 moves that MUST be made to the roster, in order of importance with the most important at the top:

1) Get Matt Forte his money and PAY DA MAN, whether its the franchise tag or a multi-year contract.

2) Add a top tier receiver for Jay Cutler to have available in his receiving corps

3) Bring in someone who can at least compete if not start over J’Marcus Webb at LT, and continue adding depth to the O-line

4) CUT FRANK OMIYALE ( I would place this as top priority, yet somehow I decided not to)

5) Re-sign Josh McCown to be Jay Cutler’s back-up, provided Martz stays in Chicago or if Tice does indeed know the Martzfense well enough to take over as the OC.

6) Bring in new talent to compete for the starting CB job adjacent of our Pro-Bowler Charles “Peanut” Tillman.

7) Continue re-signing valuable vets, including Amobi Okoye, Corey Graham, Chauncey Davis to name 3.

8) Take a very hard look at the safety position. If someone who is more consistant than Major Wright comes around, then at the very least give him a try-out

9) Stay AWAY from former Cowboys

10) Invest time and money adding overall quality depth to the entire roster.

I would put WR at # 1

I think the franchise tag for Forte is a given. Would have been way cheaper, or at least smarter, to have paid him this year when we had a ton of cap space. I hate JA.

by Ryan21 on Jan 1, 2012 3:53 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

That was my initial thought

However, given that Martz is likely to return, and how Matt Forte set the world ablaze with his play, he needs to be locked up before anything else should happen. Afterall, with Matt Forte healthy, this team is a playoff contender even with the given receiving corps.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

agree but a big time WR wouldn't hurt

Like you said in your earlier post, keep adding depth to the roster as a whole. If this year taught us anything, be prepared for any injury at any time, that’s what the good front offices do, build up strong depth in the event of injuries, there are good options behind those players that can step in. Or to put it more bluntly, what Angelo has not done in his time as GM.

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

Well of course we need a #1 receiver

I’m just stating Matt Forte’s contract issue must be resolved ASAP.

absolutely

Just need to give Jay more options, that’s all. Completely agree on Forte also.

Jackson, Bowe, Colston

Those are the top choices. But the future of this team needs to be built through the draft.

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

Wayne would be good if we draft a guy since he could teach them and the commitment wouldn't be

much or for long. Or if somehow, someway Welker becomes available.

I’d also settle for Meachem, Manningham or S Johnson if we draft someone.

Also, which Jackson? V Jack or D Jack?

by Shuggs on Jan 1, 2012 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

V-Jack, but you're right Wayne would be a good pickup too

I was just thinking more along the lines of the younger receivers that are available.

Interestingly Desean Jackson and Stevie Johnson are both in the bottom 15 in the league for drop percentage.

Draft a WR

And sign one in free agency. Blackmon or Floyd would be nice with their first rounder.

That is the point

Bottomline; the Bears must add weapons to the receiving corps. Our O-Line should be resolved with the addition of more competition as well as the return of Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi. WR, on the other hand, needs a ton of work done.

Best case scenario

Bears sign Vincent Jackson in FA, then find a way to move up and draft Justin Blackmon. That way, we add 2 great WRs, and even better if Jackson were to get hurt then Blackmon would team up with Bennett to fill the void rather easily.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

I am not a fan of Vincent Jackson.

Half of his TD’s came in one game and with an “elite” qb, he should be a game changer. Plus he held out, got multiple dui’s and seems the type to quit on you after his big payday. I think Colston, Bowe or even Stevie Johnson would be better (safer) players to spend a good chunk of our spending money on. If all those players dont get tagged or resigned.

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 5:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yes. Like Vincent Jackson.

He is and has been my ideal receiver when it comes to making an addition in Chicago. He also did a real number on the Packers in San Diego.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 1, 2012 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

I like Colston

However, here is what you would get with my idea. First and foremost, Vincent Jackson played in a system extremely close to the Martzfense while in San Diego. Also, unlike with us, San Diego has a very deep receiving corps, while utilizing the TE in Gates frequently. Yes, he has not been an ideal rolemodel, but there is zero denial when healthy Vincent Jackson is as dangerous a receiver there is in the NFL. Just ask our pro bowler Peanut that question.

And, again if Jackson were to get hurt or just sit on his ass, then Blackmon and/or Bennett would simply take over. I doubt he would get lazy provided the leadership on the team. Jay Cutler certainly won’t tolerate it, nor would anyone else on this team for the matter. I seem to recall people having the same concerns with Peppers that people have with Jackson, and tell me just how well signing Julius Peppers turned out to be.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 1, 2012 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

you're right, we do have strong leaders in the locker room

But there are just so many question marks. Hester is not a #1, Knox’s injury makes his availability very uncertain at best, Williams had too many drops to be reliable and Sanzenbacher’s going into his 2nd year. Bennett’s the only consistent threat, they need A LOT of help in this area, maybe too much to fix in just 1 offseason.

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

IDK.

I had Vincent Jackson on my fantasy team, so I might be biased. I would much rather have Colston, Bowe, or S. Johnson before Vjax. I dont know that San Diego is that deep at receiver. He may be the only one available out of the top tier of receivers though. I can’t see these teams not resigning their best players. Especially Buffalo. Maybe Colston will cost too much after they resign Brees.

by Ryan21 on Jan 1, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

yeah the WR definitely need to be #1 on the priority list

Gotta start building through the draft, what better time to start than this April??

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

This ain't fantasy football we're dealing with

The Chargers have two #1 caliber receivers, the pro bowler in Vincent Jackson and the ever dependable Malcom Floyd. Antonio Gates plays a large role in the passing game as well. Given the Air Coryell offense is centered around distributing the ball around, that would be why his fantasy numbers are lower than some.

And here is another thing to consider. Where Norv Turner uses his TEs as a key to his passing game, Mike Martz is all about the WR. Rather, provided Jay Cutler continues to play well and the O-line continues to improve, I would expect to see a noticible increase in Vincent Jackson’s stats if he comes to Chicago. A familiar system which highlights all his strengths and places an even greater emphasis on the receiver, he could very well play at a level of greatness we have yet to see from him.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

It's annoying

we just needed one other win sometime over the past 5 and this game would’ve meant something.

Instead, our win give our division rival the 3rd overall pick in a good draft and we drop 5-10 spots in the draft order, likely outside the range for Michael Floyd or the guard from Stanford, either of which would’ve been huge for the franchise.

ok, but if the kid from ILL led the NCAA in sacks

I’m all for selecting him, but Forte can’t be 45% of the offense again if we expect to go anywhere in the future. Absolutely need to build through the draft if we truly want to compete w/GB & DE, that’s the way to go about it.

McCown is a veteran journeyman QB

Bringing him would make him the “new Todd Collins”. Hanie would still be the starter after Cutler was injured.

The backup situation was loaded from the start. Hanie is not ready and lacks the abilities required to play starter, but thanks to a gutsy performance replacing the old Todd Collins, managed to become a fan favourite. Let’s just learn from what happened in 2012 in the position and move on.

I don’t think we were developing any cohesion that matters. If McCown, Bell or Roy Williams play a significant role next season, then we probably aren’t going to be competing.

by tomas21 on Jan 1, 2012 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

FWIW

(for those who care about draft order), the Bears will be picking somewhere between 13 and 19 as of now. The exact number depends on some of the afternoon games and the teibreakers. I don’t know where to find strength of schedule information, which is, I believe, the first tiebreaker.

Absolutely agreed

And rec’d. But I doubt Phillips and the McCaskeys have the balls to fire Angelo.

well there's a new McCaskey in charge now

who has said he wants to “win now” I’ll reserve judgement until I see some moves made first.

That's exciting news

If he follows through with his claim.

I don't either

But here’s to hoping!

Here's a possible backup QB option

I thought I just heard that Flynn is a going to be a free agent after the season. He’s looked really good in spot duty and threw for 6 TDs today.

He's going to sign somewhere

as a starter, and if he doesn’t, he’s not going to leave the GB offense to be the backup on our mess of an offense. And Green bay isn’t going to get outbid by us for their backup QB.

by tomas21 on Jan 1, 2012 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

Plus we got McCown

Not nearly as good as Flynn, but a good back-up nontheless. Plus, adding Flynn could be seen as controversial, given he is likely to be pursued by teams interested in adding him as their starting QB.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

yeah I think it's McCown too

I’d be very surprised if it was anyone else

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

Not really

It would only be a surprise if he is not retained provided Martz stays in Chicago. But, if a new system is in place next season, then I won’t be surprised at all to see someone else come in as the back-up.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 1, 2012 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

yeah true I checked out all the options a couple weeks ago

Think it’s just Orton, McNabb, etc. same names we all heard when Jay first went down, and I don’t think McCown did anything to lose that spot, but we’ll see what happens.

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

I think you're awarding the #2 to McCown too quickly.

He hasn’t earned anything other than a shot to COMPETE for that spot. Assuming he can do it again is repeating what we did with Hanie. One of this team’s problems is awarding positions to players based on too small a sample rather than actually bringing in more talent and letting them compete. (see Hanie, Mark Anderson)

by BearFan611 on Jan 1, 2012 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

So who else would you bring in that is willing to accept the fact they will only be a back-up at best?

The one player I can think of is Chad Henne, even then I would have Josh McCown as the favorite to win that competition, given his ability to make plays happen when all else fails with his feet, his strong arm as well as surprising accuracy, topped off with his experience in the Martzfense.

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 1, 2012 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

You're missing the point...

we’ll have to wait and see who actually becomes available. I’m saying your annointing of McCown after two “okay” games is premature. They need to bring in as much talent as possible and go through an entire off-season and training camp with those players actually competing for that spot before deciding who gives them the best chance of winning if Jay goes down again.

If McCown proves to be that guy, fine, but they made a mistake by not bringing in anyone with a real chance of competing with Hanie which proved to be their downfall this season. Going through that same process would warrant an immediate firing of Angelo, Lovie, and anyone else involved in the decision in my opinion.

by BearFan611 on Jan 1, 2012 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

So the Bears need (in no special order)...

1. great CB to pair with Tillman.
2. 2 great WRs
3. Stud NT to create havoc in the run defense and create opportunities for the D-line
4. high quality LT to add to the o-line.
5. quality C or G
6. TE who can be more of an actual offensive threat
7. DE who can get pressure on the QB
8. A quality OC who can install an offense that puts Cutler at the center of the decision making in the offense
9. A DC who can do more than play soft-coverage, surrender defense.
10. A Gm who know how to pick talent.
11. back-ups at RB and QB
12. LB to play with and learn from Urlacher/Briggs.
13. HC who can adjust a game plan in the second half.

Time to get started McCaskey!

There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!

I like your list, a lot

However this makes one very big assumption – that the McCaskeys do not suck balls…

Anyone else interested to see what happens to Darryl Drake tomorrow?

I have a feeling if anyone is to be fired, it will be him. And rightfully so, albeit injuries played a role, not one receiver on this team had at least 800 yards for the year. Not only that, but the problems seem to be the same every year, no matter who is brought in. Lack of separation, drops, mistimed routes, lack of focus, and an overall softness that is unacceptable.

Isaac Bruce new WR coach

Drake’s been here since 04, time for a change

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely

He and Spencer are the only offensive assistants remaining from Lovie’s original staff. Time to reduce that number to 1.

I know Isaac Bruce has worked w/ the WR in camp in previous years

and who better for these guys to learn from than one of the best that ever played??

by walterfan34 on Jan 1, 2012 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

It should be either him or Todd Haley as the new hypothetical receivers coach

Or better yet…Haley as the receivers coach and Bruce as the assistant receivers coach.

Given what the Bears have to work with..

Definitely need a top tier WR, a replacement for gate 68(preferably non gate-like format), and a few fresh faces on defense..especially in the secondary.

our OL is serviceable when half of it isn’t hurt, we just really need a better backup swing tackle and possibly a guard…unless Levi Horn has more potential than I have heard of. Great year to try and get that #1 receiver, a guy to pass rush on the opposite end of Peppers, and a CB/safety to work with Conte that actually connects on tackles on a regular basis.

Nice to see the year end on a positive note

Gotta improve the O-Line and get a true #1 receiver like everyone else is saying though

Secondary and receivers first

Our OL is surprisingly decent when it’s not hurt or when Gate 68 ain’t playing. We just need some depth for the OL. But we need STARTERS for the secondary and the receivers.

Roy Williams finally showed up against the Packers and Vikings but I would not consider him to be worth keeping. The receivers I would consider keeping are Bennett (obviously, him being Cutler’s favorite target), Sanz (too much raw potential), Hester (he’s the top return man in the NFL why would we dump him), and Knox if he’s able to come back. If Knox’s injury holds him out for next year, if not permanently, the need for WRs could become predominant. We need to get WRs through the draft and through free agency. However, I think free agency may be a difficult effort because Chicago has a bad reputation for WRs. We might have to go draft-only to build our WR corps further.

Chris Conte was a pleasant surprise at safety, he’s earned the starting job IMO. Now we need to build everything else. I think Jennings has what it takes, I would not dump him because he’s dropped a few INTs. Jennings is generally on the ball and punishes receivers for daring to get open. If Jennings works on catching balls he could be a force to be reckoned with. Corey Graham should also stay. But we need to either draft some CBs (and a safety) or get them through free agency.

Urlacher’s injury could be really bad. Getting another LB may not be a dumb decision either. If there’s one thing I trust Angelo with it is drafting LBs and DL. He’s usually on the ball with those (Michael Haynes aside).

Forget Defense

the league makes it difficult to play tough Defense when any hit can draw a 15yd flag.
We need Offensive weapons that can overcome the new officiating that kills a drive with a single bad call.

Load up the weapons, and let the officials play D for us.
