I noticed Dickerson left offensive linemen off of his list completely.

Eh, there's plenty of lineman around after the draft

We can just pick somebody up of another teams practice squad and plug them in. Oh, wait, they fired Angelo, nevermind.

Rule 5 is

even if a guy is under contract, since your QB had a twitter conversation with him, you should be able to get him from the other team for late round draft picks just because.

The following excited him

1) He was the primary scouter for the Greatest Show on Turf, and was a member of the staff for both Super Bowls with the Rams

2) Was the primary scouter for the 2004 Eagles, and in his first year as DPP, he had a hand in perhaps the best known as well as most published FA class in recent years.

In his rather brief resume comes the fact he has had a hand in the creation of 3 Super Bowl teams in two different cities. He knows talent.

The GM assembles talent

he doesnt coach the guys and cant help if the players under achieve. not really the case with draft choices but if a gm sign a FA or multiple signings and everyone at the time thinks its awesome or are on board with it and the player(s) play like shite then its not the GMs fault.

the negative on this guy should be the FA signings but the shape of that Oline
its not his fault the coaches miscued namdi

was it KW fault adam dunn played like that.

Well

1. Formulate Organizational Plan
2. Identify Potential Candidates
3. Review Their Histories
4. Consult with Knowledgeable People
5. Contact
6. Interview
7. Make Offer
8. Proceed With Life

No part of that suggests that they need to make every single step of their process public, or do it solely based on the timeframe of a bunch of guys and girls talking on a website.

They have not interviewed anybody. Other teams have.

Those are both facts. You can google or vett or do whatever they are doing currently but until you actually speak to a man about what his ideas are for how this team needs to move forward in the future,

by Ryan21 on Jan 11, 2012 1:02 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

hit enter on accident,

without interviews, how can you know if someone is good for the job? If you want an interview with someone, get. Sell him on why he needs to interview with your team. We are not selling ice to eskimos here ! Chicago Bears are a storied franchise that has a franchise QB, are in one of the biggest markets, have a geat city, and have a team that was in the NFCCG last year and playoff bound until injuries derailed them. The only plausible reason we are not getting interviews is Lovie and Ted Phillips.

by Ryan21 on Jan 11, 2012 1:09 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

I am guessing

the GM search will go pretty much like the Martz hire went 2 years ago. Allow other candidates to go elsewhere until the unpopular choice (but the choice they want) is the only one left.

In this case, Lovie wants Ruskell because he can control him, and Phillips probably likes him because he won’t make waves.

by tomas21 on Jan 11, 2012 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

No

but again, this kind of behavior is consistent with “Bears’ culture.” To me, not even interviewing a single candidate is preposterous.

They are not serious about bringing in someone from outside the team. If they were, Lovie wouldnt be involved in who they hire. I can understand that they want to keep Lovie. - Lovie will be the GM and will report to phillips

- Bears are looking for a guy to essentially set up the draft board and thats it

- Implied Lovie will have majority of power when it comes to the roster

He has a track record

Of removing those who disagree with his philosophy (ie Ron Rivera) and now seems to have the ability to influence the search for his boss. These are cause for concern if nothing else.

The thread is pure speculation from an organization that, from the outside, appears to be dragging their feet while other teams are signing gm’s. This situation appears comparable to the last OC search where we ended up with Mike Martz.

Agreed with you

on Ron. It’s a shame he wanted to move on so soon, because he was a quality DC. If you’re not committed to the cause, Lovie doesn’t seem to want you around, hence giving Ron the boot. Martz’s non-committal stance on next season probably impacted his release more than performance.

If you were an OC, would you want to come here? You have Cutler and a bunch of wideouts that can’t catch a ball, and if that group of personnel isn’t likely to change anytime soon, you could end up lost in despair. Lovie has a say in personnel, so he does deserve partial credit for the situation.

Taking longer than a week? Ted said it would take as long it had to take, and that they would be vetting folks relentlessly. The Bears are taking their time with this, and just because McKenzie signed with Oakland instantly and a Raven wants to stay a Raven, people think somehow that the Bears are at fault.

Just because we don’t have a new GM in a week and a half does not mean that Tim Ruskell is instantly the new GM. Relax, people.

by Virto on Jan 11, 2012 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

Its a fact of life that most people in the USA get help getting their jobs from their friends.

They get an early tip on an opening, a friend gets them an interview, they use friends as references etc. Most jobs never make it to the help wanted pages of the newspaper.

In the NFL players, coaches and executives move around a lot and know a lot of people around the league. If you eliminate everyone Angelo, Smith and now Ruskell know as a candidate for a job in chicago that could be as much as half the league and a lot of good qualified people.

George McCaskey and Ted Phillips did not say Lovie would be picking the next GM, just that Lovie would be the coach in 2012 and the new GM would have to be able to work with that. Lovie has two years and 11million dollar contract and money is money, not to mention that Lovie for all the finger pointing is one of the winningest coaches in the NFL right now. With some luck 2012 could be a very big year for the Bears, too soon to gut the organization and start rebuilding without giving it one more go.

Ron Rivera wanted a HC job

He wasnt trying to go to another team as the DC. Lovies wants yes men who have no ambition and not enough stones in their pants to tell him no. I am willing to bet the Ron Rivera will go on to have a much better career than Lovie. Now we are going to get a yes man for GM and spend all our picks on defense. They need to tighten the leash on Lovie but all they are doing is letting him run wild. When he came here he said our #1 priority was to beat the Packers. FAIL. after he fired Ron Rivera he said “Trust Me”. EPIC FAIL !

Three other franchises

Are replacing their GM’s. Two of the three have hired a new GM and the third is working through the final paperwork. In that time the Bears have yet to interview. The Angelo decision would not have been made overnight which lends a reasonable person to speculate that they have had longer than a week to compile a plan for replacing Angelo.

Based upon this one could start to wonder what the Bears are doing up there at Halas Hall…

I am having a hard time nit comparing the

Completely different situation.

The cubs are rebuilding, they know the general direction they want to go, and the GM will provide vision.

With the Bears, the club has the vision, and they need a GM to fit in to their plans, not to make the plans.

Taking too long can impact both of those things.

If the Bears take too long, which is still probably weeks from now, it will make it difficult for that awesome GM to be successful right away.

by BusterK on Jan 11, 2012 9:31 AM CST up reply actions

If the Bears were the only team

Looking for a GM then they can take as much time as they want. However, how is time not an issue when there is a finite number of candidates and the “competition” has already interviewed and signed guys from that short list. I would think it would be better to be aggressive and get the guy you want than to wait and choose from the leftovers.

That is unless the guy they want is already in the building at which all of this discussion is mute.

Please explain to me what is silly about this line of thought?

by 75bearsfan on Jan 11, 2012 9:36 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

There's not a finite number.

The 6 or 7 names that keep getting bandied about are not an end-all, be-all of candidates.

Isnt there a sizable drop off from the top 1-3 and the bottom 4-6?

how do we know that?

not being a wiseguy, but how do we know what the drop off is between who the media say are the top three candidates and who the media say are the next three candidates?

The better question is

do the Bears know if there’s a difference?

Why would you think that?

Who knew Ted Thompson would be successful before Seattle? How many interviews has Reggie McKenzie had in the past?

There are 32 franchises, each with 2-3 positions that are a set-up for GM (Director of Scouting, Director of Pro Personnel, Director of Player Personnel, even Consultant) as well as another dozen or so who are not employed by the league but remain close to it, like Sundquist or Cowher. So there are probably 50-100 viable candidates for a GM position, and 3-6 teams looking each offseason.

Sure, it’d be nice to get a guy from a Championship franchise, but that’s no guarantee. I remember when Dave Wannstedt was the next hot prospect, a sure-fire, no-brainer, soon-to-be-champion.

by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 11, 2012 9:51 AM CST up reply actions

You had to mention Wannstadt...

That is totally fair. I just wonder how able Phillips is to find that guy… I guess we will find out…

by 75bearsfan on Jan 11, 2012 9:55 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Just did a quick scan...

Only going back s seasons, 2009-2011:

4 different teams played in the Super Bowl (GB, Pitt, Saints, Colts)
7 teams had 13+ wins in any of the 3 seasons
10 teams had 12+ wins
14 teams had 11+ wins

There are a good number of teams in the NFL that have had a fair amount of success recently. And a bad year could result from injuries or schedule as much as bad management.

If the Bears consider several candidates from only the top 10 teams in the NFL, plus a handful of folks currently outside the game, and they’ll still have a list of about 25. If we accept that at least 1 or 2 of the other 5 GMs hired wouldn’t be a good fit for the Bears (just as the Bears’ hire may not be a good fit for the Colts or the Rams or the Raiders, for example, because of ownership or philosophical differences), then the Bears have missed on only a few of several dozen candidates, all of whom may or may not be outstanding. I just don’t see this as any time to panic.

In looking at the list of teams, I wonder if there is anyone to consider in New Orleans? They seem to have put together continued success via both the draft and free agency.

Who’s to say they aren’t conducting the first round of interviews by phone or video conferences? They could be interviewing people right now and we wouldn’t even know.

Really, the only time a candidate would need to come to Halas Hall would be to meet the McCaskeys, right before shaking hands and signing the contract.

To be quite honest.... At this point I woulnd't care if Lovie is the de facto GM.....

If he fails, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility, the entire staff gets the boot. If he succeeds well then the so do the Bears. Mike Tice knows what the offense and, more importantly, what Jay Cutler needs. He’ll most likely go D heavy in the draft but that just means that the aging D will get an infusion of youth. As long as they fix the receiver and OT issue I’ll be fine. I’m not throwing in the towel nor do I want Lovie or one of his buddies as the puppet GM, but at this point I’m a bit tired of freaking out about the way this team is run because it’s never really going to change and I have to accept that.

Michael Wright on ESPN 1000

- When Halas Hall wants to go in lock down they can do it

- Have not heard any thing really pertaining to GM search

- Got info on a story and Angelo brought him in to talk implying that Angelo wanted the source

- Does NOT think ruskell will get the job

- The one thing he is hearing is that the Bears WANT to go outside and hire GM

- Lot of good names / people still out there to hire

- Names ray farmer, lake dawson (heard rumblings of dawson), kiem, snead, etc

- peter king thinks Bears job is flawed by having phillips between owner and GM

- Agreed with that assessment because Phillips is not a football guy and questions who is running the show

- Feels / Thinks that George McCaskey made the decision to fire Jerry not Phillips

- Also thinks that George McCaskey is spear heading search NOT Phillips (NOTE my guess is thats why there is little info coming out of Halas Hall)

- Tice wants Koetter for passing game coordinator but Looks like Koetter will be OC in atlanta due to stability and running the offense even though Tice and Koetter are tight

- Forte got a letter from Bears outlining who they did not want to pay him One reason was that Forte had never been in Pro Bowl Thinks that might be reason why Forte wants to play in Pro Bowl

I am not thrilled they are taking their time but at least they are researching candidates (well one would assume anyways)……Lets say they hire someone from one of the playoff teams….Then people will know why they were not moving at a “fast pace”….

Zaidman said on when of his score updates couple of days ago that the Bears are looking at guys from playoff / successful teams and wanting to know what role they played in the drafting process and that could take awhile…..

The source

wouldnt lie to them? “Oh ya drafting such and such in the 3rd round was all me!” or “I warned them not to draft that guy in the second round because I knew then he was a bust”…

Like I said I am not thrilled but in the grand scheme of things me getting upset about the GM search really does nothing since this is how they want to do it….

Until the process picks up I have to settle with playing SWTOR and killing Sith Lords on Mind Trick with the wife or playing Madden on PS3 and hiring my own GM and OC until they at least hire someone or narrow it down to the final 2….Then when they hire someone like say ruskell or morocco brown then I can see being upset and or livid…..

would verify what involvement XYZ candidate had in any process. Anyone can really lie, but if they’re a college scouting director then it pretty much tells the Bears that he had a big hand in drafting said prospect.

What if they interview people you don't like

or people that nobody has ever heard of? Will you complain about who they choose to speak with or will you be perfectly happy just because somebody has walked through the door?

I still would not be shocked to see the hire wait until after the Super Bowl.

lol and what kinda question is that

if they hire someone you dont like, will you complain? uhh probably, you wouldnt?

by TR MacReady on Jan 11, 2012 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

It's more a matter

of do you want the job done quickly or do you want the job done right?

In a year, 5 years, 10 years, we’ll all be able to look back on whatever hire they make and decide if it’s good/bad/other, but I’d like to think they’re trying to do this right. If they just wanted someone to say yes to Lovie all the time, they’d move Ruskell up and they would have done it within a day or two of canning Angelo.

Just because everyone has certain perceptions of the Bears org and the McCaskeys, it doesn’t mean they’re all true. Just because you suspect they’re sitting there counting pennies and throwing darts at pictures of candidates doesn’t mean they actually are.

They may take a month or more to fill this spot and it may be great for the team. It may take a month or more and be horrible, or it could be great or terrible by tomorrow afternoon. No matter who they hire or when, it’s going to be “hurry up and wait” since it’ll be at least a season before we know if it’s going to pay off.

by Virto on Jan 11, 2012 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Whether the job will be done right won't be apparent for a season or more

But right now it looks like it isn’t being done quickly, so that’s what people talk about. Off-season, breathe it in.
