Pompei may be on to something

I got the impression that Firing Jerry was a spur of the moment thing.

The $64,000 question is what brought it on. Since it happened on Tuesday it might have been something Jerry wanted to do on Monday but got shot down on and then fired.

but then maybe you guys are rubbing off on me.

His article is prior to the announcement

but I wouldn’t doubt that the Bears didn’t see this coming. Why does it take over a week to do research on ten teams or so? Way too long- it always seems they’re front office is slow to react to any kind of change. Adaptation people!

comes under the heading if you can''t beat them have fun and join them instead.

but the article did make me think what if:

Jerry Decided to fire Lovie told Ted, Ted said hold on gotta talk to George and George said NO you tell Jerry he’s fired Lovie stays!

After all here is Jerry telling Lovie that the whole Martz fiasco is on Lovie and Lovie has to go so that Jerry can bring in a guy like Jeff Fisher to save his butt.

Or maybe George just got tired of the Jerry and Mike head butting act and decided since one is going why not both.

But Pompei’s premise that the reason the Bears seem to be moving slowly is because firing Jerry was a last minute decision and up until a short time ago they intended to keep him thru 2013 so there was no need for a list of potential replacements just yet.

My theory - Angelo was Phillips' scape-goate

Ted Phillips should have been the one to go – at the top level. But he was able to talk McCaskey into letting Angelo go instead, to save his own job. And since it was all Angelo’s fault, and Lovie has nothing to do with the 1 in 5 playoffs over the past 5 years, he was “guarenteed” another year of job security.

by JimmyMack on Jan 12, 2012 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

My theory too.

I also think Martz was Lovie’s own scapegoat.

granted, they’re all Discovery Networks. Seriously, I don’t want to know what Sarah Palin is doing. I don’t care about long haul truck drivers in the snow, I don’t care about what crap you’re digging out of old barns and selling for a fortune.

Discovery used to teach you something.
TLC used to be cool shows with a lot of home improvement stuff.
History used to be the Hitler-y Channel…and it was GOOD.

I dropped them all from my cable lineup because they’re literally catering to the trailer park crowd.

The only reason, the SOLE reason

is that I’m out in Elgin, and broadcast from the city does not come in without a directional rooftop antenna. It’s a rental, so I can’t stick one up there.

Instead, I pay Comcast (shudder) 25 bucks to supply me with local crap, no HD and nothing good to watch. The only reason I did it was so I could watch football.

I’d get U-verse but the house needs to be rewired with cat-5. It’s all cloth-wrapped pairs from the 20s right now. It wouldn’t cost me anything since I work for AT&T, but I don’t want to deal with the landlord needing to be on-site for 2 8-hour days while they do a cable drop.

But Olson seems to have a pretty decent resume. His only blemish is he was the QB Coach in Chicago in 2003. Probably not his fault though. Not really much you can do with Kordell Stewart, Chris Chandler and “Sexy” Rexy.

I would guess Jay would want Fisch, since they worked together in Denver. Fisch was the WR coach while he was there.

We need Toub to have a solid group, Bowman, Jennings and Steltz all fit in that, along with Graham whom you already mentioned.

First off, we don't even know if Toub will still be here (sucks for us if he goes)

These special teamers are all C+ plus players, save Graham. We could certainly retain them, but the loss of any of them would barely be a blip.

I agree with keeping Okoye, I think he would be good to keep, and Steltz did finally show some of that ability we’ve all been told he has – late in the season. Bowman – easily replaced he’s small and rarely used except in the nickel. Even on ST he hasn’t had his number called very much. I’d be just a happy with an even younger, but larger, version of the same.

I like the sound of Marc Ross from the Giants:

According to this Trib article from Brad Biggs,

Ross, an All-Ivy receiver for Princeton, has been Giants director of college scouting for five seasons. Like Licht, he came up through the Eagles, for whom he was a regional scout before becoming the NFL’s youngest college scouting director at 27 in 2000. The Eagles drafted longtime standouts Brian Westbrook, Lito Sheppard and Derrick Burgess and he has continued to acquire top talent during his run in New York, including Jason Pierre-Paul, Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Phillips and Terrell Thomas.

JPP is a beast, Bears fans wanted Nicks and Phillips for our team and Thomas is a solid DB who got hurt this year. Plus everyone knows about Westbrook and Sheppard. That is a solid dude.

All the other candidates are good too but I like this guy.

Jay Cutler is still my quarterback.

Let's all step a little further away from the ledge regarding the GM search

First and Foremost Ted Phillips is stressing his intent as well as desire to focus and probably hire someone outside of the organization to be the new GM. My gut feeling, it will be between Ross and Raye. Both have rather good resumes, I have Ross ahead of Raye because with Raye comes the reputation of being a great exec who knows how to evaluate talent, but was also a part of an organization that was beyond horrible retaining their best RBs. That is the one and rather severe red flag I have raised on Raye. Otherwise, the hiring of either gentlemen would make me happy.

I’ve seen Greg Olson’s name quite a few times, but never expected him to get the first interview even after the Bears got shot down by the Titans for Cutler’s guy. I still think Fisch and Bates are the favorites, but Olson wouldn’t be too bad of a hire.

Oh

And I forgot to mention another possible candidate for the O-Line job. His name escapes me, but he was the O-Line coach for the Jets the last few years. Said to be one of the most respected in the league, and his beliefs seem to match that of Tice’s.

Think that's Bill Callahan...

and believe he just left the Jets to take position with Dallas….

Hmm..

I thought Callahan was the Raiders’ O-Line coach? Could be the same guy lol

It'll probably be like Marrinelli on the D-Line

will run some drills and they’ll hire someone else to run a majority of them

Schottenheimer?

No way he takes a demotion. He’s either going to be an NFL Head coach, or he’s going to be the OC for Alabama.

There’s been talk that if his dad (Marty) gets hired he could be the OC under him

He just got fired from the Jets

I’m sure he’d take whatever work he could get, especially the way the Jets ended their season…if he has 2 good seasons with Cutler, I’m sure he could use that to get a good job elsewhere

Of this particular group

I do like the sound of Ross the most. What happened to Snead? wasn’t he supposed to be in the mix? Did he decline also or was he deemed “not a fit”. Mybe I missed something, just don’t remember hearing about him last few days.

I like Marc Ross too

Seems to be the best qualified and has the best track record and seems to mesh well with the general philosophy of the team. If I were to give the keys of the franchise to a brand new GM it would be him.

I still think Mike Tice as OC is the smartest thing to do even if he needs a “passing coordinator” which is basically the QB coach with a slightly larger responsibility. Tice will run the Martzfense and make it decipherable and bring back audibles which is one of Cutler’s strengths. With the right players Tice’s offense should be clockwork in Cutler’s hands or even McCown’s (or David Gerrard . . . I’m expecting Tice to lobby the new GM to sign him).
