Update: Chicago Bears GM search; Mike Martz retires
A few notes coming out of the Bears camp this evening...
- The team says they interviewed Patriots Director of Pro Personnel Jason Licht today.
- Jimmy Raye is expected to interview tomorrow, and Brad Biggs guesses we could see one candidate interviewed per day through Friday of this week.
- Mike Martz says that he is officially retiring from coaching, saying "It's time".
Stay tuned...

Huh, and I thought Raye would be the first one interviewed
I guess they’ve really kept the info from leaking.
Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Mike Martz is retiring. He’s philosophy no longer works in the #NFL. The game evolved, he didn’t and he finally realized that. #Bears
Didn't Martz retire 2 yes ago?
On the Bears payroll?
See the thing about Martz is
His style of offense was perfect for the late 90s / early 00’s , but the game is just too different these days. The defenses are too intricate to not be able to audible. Martz was good in the day, but his offense is out dated

I think it was more a problem
with us having none of the parts needed to make his system work, aside from Forte. He needs a super-accurate pocket passer, quick and intelligent receivers who run great routes, and a line that can hold a pass block for a long time. We have none of that.
He probably could do just fine in green bay or new orleans.
if he were in green bay or new orleans
Then they’d trade Finley and Graham… No need for those TEs

yup
plus with a HOF QB, WR’s, RB and a great line, it probably looked better than it really was. Just like the 46 defense, it’s weakness were shown and it wasn’t a challenge to stop it anymore

Good.
I guess seeing almost every team in the playoffs have a game changing TE contribute, including the one he almost ruined, was enough for him to realize that the game was passing him by.
Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!
Bears Off Season
I don’t claim to be a GM or know much about player personnel but if I were running the Bears I have an idea what I would try to accomplish this off season. There are a number of free agent wide recievers out there. Out of Dwayne Bowe, Marques Colston, Vincent Jackson, Steve Smith, and Robert Meecham I would try and sign 2 of them. I don’t think it is worth giving up a couple of draft picks to get Brandon Marshall to Chicago. I do however think that it might be a smart move to try and trade Lance Briggs for some mid round draft picks, and as crazy as some people may think this will sound, I will be more than willing to see if someone would over pay in draft picks for Hester. This is my reasoning; Hester is being paid as a wide receiver who also does kick returns. He is over paid for what he gives us on offense. If he would restructure his contract staying would be fine, but if a team in the AFC would drop 3 draft picks or more for him, trade him. If you trade Briggs and/or Hester then try to sign John Abraham, and if you can’t, go after Cliff Avril. You can play Avril on the other end of the line, and then move Idonije to the middle next to Melton and Paea. The key to the Bears defense is pressure up the middle, and that was proven to be successful when Tommie Harris was firing on all 8 cylinders. Then you sign Forte. Cutler having back Carimi and Williams, along with Forte and 2 stud receivers you can use your draft picks to build depth and restock the defense to make it younger again. If you can get something for J’Marcus Webb, Edwin Williams, and dump Frank Omiyale maybe the Bears could take a look at Buffalo’s free agent left tackle. Spencer and Louis could be the primary backups, because they are able to play multiple positions.
Bold ideas.
I see how you lean.
Above all; keep 'em guessing, never let them lose their sense of confusion.

and I think now that i think about it grab a WR in FA. im not tryin to start a discussion im just being inquisitive
You're definitely hammering your point home

So according to this...
We would trade away our best lineman over the second half of the season, try to trade J’Marcus (I lol’ed at that) and we would only be starting 3 offensive linemen (Carimi, Williams and Demetrius Bell) who between the three of them have APPEARED (not started) in 80 of 144 games spanning their combined 9 years in the league.
I agree with you on trading Briggs, but not Hester. He’s the 3rd best offensive weapon we have and that would be true even if he didn’t play a single offensive down.

So your willing to trade our leading tackler .....
…… away for what exactly ??? Draft picks for one of the mose important positions in the Tampa 2 , no thanks uless we get a Cutler type deal in return .
And we’re supose to go after an aging John Abraham whom hasn’t palyed a full season in forever or Cliff Avril ( whom is pretty darn good , but ain’t leavin Detroit ) ?

I hate when people wanna trade away all our best players
there’s always a few doofuses every year who talk about trading Lach, forte, Briggs, and Tillman. It’s hilarious.
When you have good players, you keep them.

I would love
to see them bring in Hue Jackson to coach Cutler and install the passing offense. He did a great job with Flacco (who has since regressed), and really improved the Oakland offense.
Hue Jackson is interviewing with the Rams right now .....

Haley's a paranoid dude .....
According to the Kansas City Star, Todd Haley believed his personal cellphone and “many rooms” at Chiefs headquarters were bugged during his tenure as coach.
Not so sure we want him back ……

it was clear he went on a tirade after the Raiders lost and blamed everyone but himself. He will probably try to undercut Lovie if there is anything that goes wrong and thats the last thing the team needs.
well considering he took a team
that was on it’s way to a #1 draft pick and helped them go 8-8, I’d say it was eveyrone’s fault but his

if Martz was worth a damn...
his ‘system’ wouldnt be outdated. instead, his ‘system’ would have been about evolving his play book to meet the abilities of his personel.
it’s not about YOU Martz. it’s about winning thru getting the most of your resources.
by ChicagoBearOfAnaheim on Jan 17, 2012 12:37 AM CST reply actions
I agree
I don’t think Martz’s downfall was that his system is outdated. It’s that he took a job where none of the personnel to make his system run well were in place, and he refused to adapt at all without a gun to his head.
Also, he sucks at talent evaluation. Absolutely terrible. His hand-picked guys here were Manu, Chester Taylor, Todd Collins and Nathan Enderle.
really
Taylor was hand picked by Martz?
Martz ask for a vet QB and Angelo waits until his guy the late great caleb hanie gets hurt and there are no decent vet QB’s left.
Enderle was a 5th round pick in a year with no off season due to the strike and you can say he was not a 5th round talent?
How can the Martz system be outdated when it is just a off shoot or the system used in SD and elsewhere and doing fine in those places. For many years we had Turner and the WC system which is still successful elsewhere but never really did much in chicago shall be call it outdated as well?
Lets forget that the Bears have one of the worst pass protection offensive lines in the NFL , lets forget that the Bears have only one decent WR and he is not a #1. No Martz has to come up with a system that works with only two good players and guess what he did for 10 games Take away the only two good players on offense and he sucks. Kick a man when he is down.

There were a LOT of people here
clamoring for Chester Taylor. He was a hot commodity, no one thought he’s be a bust. And it’s too early to bitch about Nathan Enderle, because he was VERY good in college. A 4 year starter. So give him a break

in the second year and with only two play makers
Martz system was 7-3 with a 5 game winning streak where they were averaging over 30 points per game.
That was with only two playmakers subtract Cutler and Forte and you would be hard pressed to name a NFL offense with less talent. Evidently it is about winning by getting the most out of nothing to work with.
