Dont like the Hanley article.

I know Forte demands more salary, but he should. Thats a part of how the game is played now a days. Pay Forte and lets stop talking about it.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

why am I not suprised! :o)

but he makes a serious point. Good running backs are common but how many WR’s are as good as Vincent Jackson.

What I don't get is, why spend $11 Mil on Jackson, but not $7 Mil on Forte

Seems to me, that contribution-wise, the money on Forte would be better spent.

If I’m the GM, I offer Forte a 6 year/$30 Mil deal with $15Mil guaranteed. $6mil sigining bonus included. That way we can spread his money out $5-6mil per year. Forte has to know that he won’t actually get $5Mil in years 4,5,6.

I think he is saying that if you pay Forte you will not be able to afford to pay VJ

and that VJ + a forte replacement > Forte and VJ substitute. I don’t neccessary agree but it is a thought.

Yeah, thats what I got out of it too. But why overpay Jackson, who probably has only 2-3 good years left in him,

when you can probably pay Forte a little less and get a possible 3-5 years out of him.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

by fortefan09 on Jan 18, 2012 10:07 AM CST up reply actions

but then again

getting another 3-5 years out of a RB isn’t a guarantee anyway, especially one like Forte that gets high usage in the run game, pass game and blocking…longevity at RB is rare these days.

I understand where Hanley is coming from,

But he forgets that the Bears can draft for some of those holes and not “plug” them with expensive free-agents.

Also, I find it ironic that almost every media-personality in Chicago derides JA for letting Thomas Jones go with nothing in return after 2006, even though Cedric Benson was still an unknown and looked like he could potentially fill Jones’ shoes. Now, Barber has more “miles” on his legs than Forte, Bell has shown some promise but coughs up the ball too frequently, and yet Hanley advocates letting Forte (IMO a better running-back than Jones) walk away for nothing?

E.F.K.

by DaBearBus on Jan 18, 2012 8:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed but

I also think Forte needs to lower his demands too. Sure, he had 4.9 YPC this year and was on track for over a 1000 on the ground, but potentiality and reality are two different things. In reality, Forte missed 4.5 games with injury, didn’t hit 1000 yrds rushing, and the position he plays is perhaps the one with the greatest turnover in the NFL.

Yes, the man deserves to get paid, and paid well, but not at a ridiculous rate that eats up most of the cap-space and hinders the team from plugging its other holes.

Forte is not Walter Payton

He has already missed more games than Walter did in 13 years.

The Bears have more holes to fill than you can expect to fill in one off season, a franchise tag might be the best thing with Forte it would still leave the Bears enough cap space to make one big F/A signing and to bring in a couple of journeymen F/A’s. That along with a good draft and I can see the Bears making some noise next year.

Agreed...

If the Bears can save a few cap dollars on Forte this season and use that to add pieces around him and Cutler, they can look to pay Forte or trade/not re-sign him the year after with a much better idea of his future and value. Still very worried about the new GM; the more I hear about the candidates, the more I fear Phillips is screwing up the GM for the second time. Maybe it’s time to save on Ted Phillips salary and use that money to hire someone who knows more about football! Of course that is a very large pool of candidates, so it could take some time to weed them all out!

Cmon Ed,

We all know Forte is not Payton.

The fact is that Forte is the best back weve had since Payton and arguably one of the best backs in todays game. Try to work a deal with the man that will satisfy both sides and be happy that you will have a top notch running back on your team for 4-5 more years. And Forte missed 99% of his games because of this one injury. And the injury wasnt as bad as the media made it sound. Forte said he wasnt 100% yet and the Bears were obviously not going to win enough game to get into the playoffs. So why play him if it doesnt matter.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

I hate the frickin’ worthless argument that a team shouldn’t play every game to win. How is that not spitting in the face of every fan who paid good hard earned money to go and watch a game played by their favorite team in person?

That he makes any sense, yeah, any star player wants to get paid, especially backs, giving the short life as an NFL player for a RB. The only problem with that is , well he was 50% of our offense, the past year, oh and lets not forget our tier 20 receivers that the Bears can count on. I’m sure we’ll get VJ ( uhuh ), and he’ll be our 100% offense next year, who’s not on board with that? Really….

by transylvanian bear on Jan 18, 2012 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

Let's not pretend that Forte is the only back in the game that can do that....

Little statistical insight….

Forte played 11 games (we won’t be unfair to him and count his final start. he only played a quarter and rushed 5 times for 12 yards. He’s a downhill runner and tends to amass more of his yardage, as do most backs, in the second half when the defense starts to wear down)

First, Forte was NOT 50% of the Bears offense during those 11 games. You’re quoting early season numbers. But he fell off seriously after the first five games of the season. Ignoring the 12th start, because that would seriously lower Forte’s percentage unfairly, in his 11 games, he accounted for 37.7% of the Bears total offense (1475 total yards out of 3910 yards by the team through Week 11)

But here’s where it gets interesting……

Percentage of team offense in games started:
Forte: 37.7
Barber: 57.1
Bell 40.1

Looking at your main criteria, Forte lagged behind both Barber , who was insane in his one start, and Bell, who still outpaced forte in his three starts.

Now, Consider this: the starting running back provided 37.7% of the teams total offense with forte as the starter and 43.8% with Barber and Bell in that role.

I’m sorry, but too much is being placed on what forte accomplished. He’s a good back, but really…..Forte averaged 134 yards per game in his 11 full games….with Jay Cutler on the field and throwing the ball, taking pressure off the running game.

In starters averaged 122 yards per game with defenses focused almost completely on taking the running game away and forcing Caleb Hanie and Josh McCown to throw the ball to win.

My point isn’t that Forte sucks. He clearly doesn’t.

But let’s not pretend that the Bears are shot without Forte or that Barber and Bell were less productive. They weren’t, even though they didn’t have Cutler keeping defenses from stacking he box against them. Let’s be realistic about it.

should have read…..

through Week 12 or Game 11….take your pick. either way we’re counting the first 11 games and not counting Forte’s 12th start against him when he only played a quarter and only recorded 12 yards.

Would promoting him be a wholesale upgrade from JA? Or would it just save the McCaskey’s a few bucks?

by JimmyMack on Jan 18, 2012 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

He also said

that Ruskell has been a part of conference championship teams at each stop (atlanta, tampa, seattle, and chicago). The funny thing is that at 3 of those 4 stops, Ruskell was in his first year when they went to the Championship game. And in 2 of them, he was the assistant GM. So he likely had very little, if any, impact on the roster construction of those teams, yet Mullin suggests that as a possible reason to hire him.

I think Mullin either owes Ruskell a favor or wants to be the potential new GMs favorite media member, and is painting him in a rosy picture. OR, Lovie just wants Ruskell, the rest of these guys are a dog and pony show, and the Bears are using Pompei and Mullins to get Chicago used to the idea of them hiring another second-rate GM.

by tomas21 on Jan 18, 2012 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

Wrong
Ruskell has been a GM, the rest haven’t, thus most qualified

That gives him the most experience at the position, but not necessarily the most qualifications.

Phillips stated that they want a candidate whose strength is in drafting, which might indeed put Ruskell at the end of the bench per qualifications. If Ruskell cannot show that he has drafted as well as, or identified talent as well as, Raye or Ross or Licht, then it would be difficult to consider him the most qualified.

Moon is an idiot, plain and simple, for advocating Ruskell over the other choices they’ve been interviewing. The Seahawks went straight in the crapper once he took over, from Super Bowl-caliber to 4th pick in the draft in 4 years.
