SMD's 3 round Mock Draft 2.0
Second installation .
Updated version.
Round 1: Melvin Ingram DE/DT South Carolina
6'2
272
Great value in the mid-first round. Some people here I know won't like this pick, as drafting a DE in the first round seems to be an unpopular decision. However, I believe the Bears will go defense in the first round and Melvin Ingram, who has been compared to Robert Ayers, would make a perfect bookend to Julius Peppers. Is projected as a low 4.7 to mid 4.8 guy. Quick and fast with great ball skills. LINK
Round 2: Mike Adams OT Ohio State
6'6
320
I really believe the Bears will go one of two ways in the 2nd round. Way number 1 is they will go offensive tackle, as seen above. Way number two would be drafting corner, or safety. With Adams still on the board when their pick comes around, they found it impossible to pass him up. A prototypical NFL LT with long arms and good size. LINK
Round 3 (pick 1): Jayron Hosley CB Virginia Tech
5'10
170
Was the 2nd round pick in my last Mock, I think he will be there when the Bears pick in the 3rd. Ideal Cover 2 corner, good tackler, good ball skills. A bit undersized. LINK
Round 3 (pick 2): Sean Spence OLB Miami (U)
5'11 - 6'0
225-230
I don't expect Spence to be around when the Bears pick here, but I would love if he were. Great coverage skills and great balls skills. Solid tackler, not punishing, but brings the ball carrier down with effectiveness . He's undersized. Listed as 6'0, but looks more 5'10 - 5'11. Will definitely need to bulk up. Would fit well as a SLB, and could even stay on the field during passing situations due to his great speed. (Listed anywhere from 4.5 to 4.4) LINK

I'm OK with this...
These are all positions of need and these are positions tend to be easier to find NFL starters straight out of the draft. I hope the Bears stray away from small CBs who play zone well (read as cannot cover well man-to-man). I would prefer a taller/larger CB with some closing speed.
There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!
yeah but see
Most college CBs don’t play man well. And the ones who do are usually the elite guys.. amukamara, peterson.
So getting a strong zone corner who tackles well in the 3rd round is a great pick up

Agreed
I’d like the ones who can make Man plays, but I’d getting ones who have good upside are great.

they will start taking form the more i can research
My next mock will be a 7 rounder.
Then as we get closer to the draft I will start including all 32 teams round by round.

Bears won't draft a corner higher than the 3rd. I would think think the OL or DL would be the first two rounds, like has been said. Maybe a value LB in the 2nd.
No LBs were worth taking in the 2nd
Sean Spence can start right away and can be had in the 3rd

thats not enough
bears need a FA to contribute as a number 1 right away and another wr or that Allen TE, or both
we need to upgrade by two WR's this off season

Nope
I’m under the impression they will make a push for a FA WR

I hope so
Do you get the same feeling for a free agent guard?
Not at all
They’ll draft Oline. No one in FA that’s going to be worth outbidding for.

This is a pretty solid draft
Although I do have some concerns with Ingram. He just seems better suited to play in a 3-4 defense as a OLB, and he will probably be drafted before the Bears pick him solely for that reason. Everyone else I’m okay with.
Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

I agree with this...
He’s agile, but he’s not explosive. We need explosive. We need people who can jump the line and assault…

Have you watched him play?
He’s better than Izzy and that’s all the Bears need right now

Everyone thought Robert Ayers would be best suited for 3-4 olb too
and he’s excelling more as a hand down DE.
Ingram is almost identical to Ayers

Except wasn't Ayers a DE in college turned OLB in NFL
Compared to Ingram who’s played in the 3-4 as an OLB in Alabama?

Ingram was a ILB his freshman year and has never attended Alabama
He played very little Linebacker though and moved to DE halfway through his sophomore season.
He’s a DE and a great pass rusher and VERY stout against the run. Considered possibly the best athlete in the draft.
Not sure where you got Alabama, he’s always attended SC

I played OLB in a 3-4 in HS and 2 years of college, then changed to 4-3 DE when the def changed.
Its a lot easier to switch to a 4-3 than vice-versa. In a 3-4 you have many roles to play based on the def call and the off set. In a 4-3 you have almost the same 2 reads every play. Yes, the pro jump is much greater but I still think the transition is easier for the OLBs putting their hand down that the DE standing up.

I still think we need a WR with our first pick.
We have drafted dline high every damn year. We need to get weapons for Cutler and getting just 1 FA WR isnt going to cut it because we have gaping holes there and have to replay REW and Knox may not be healthy by training camp and Hurd will be in jail. THats 3 spots and we have only 1 starter in Earl the Pearl. Also, Vjax, Colston, and Bowe will most likely resign with their current teams. We draft defense heavy EVERY year. Offense is our neglected red headed step child.

not if they sign a WR in free agency

We still need more than 1.
We have Bennett, Hester, and Sanzenbacher. Knox is a big ?

but if you sign a stud free agent WR
there is no necessity to use the first pick on another. This team has other critical needs in addition to WR.

I think they'll go WR with the second 3rd round pick , or with the 4th round pick
this draft is deep with WRs. There’s no need to blow a 1st round pick on the most uncertain position

an offense needs weapons
the more the better. i would like them take a wr in the first 2 rds. so it doesnt necessarily have to be the first but if floyd is there i would hope they take him

The Bears can just go the two FA Wr route. I can see them taking a Bowe or Wayne and slightly overpaying for Robert Meachem and using the draft for other spots.
We have way too many young and unproven guys that no one is really worth it other than Blackmon I guess. Besides, most of the best receivers in the NFL were not high or mid 1st round picks.
Theres to many free agent WRS to draft 1 in the first round
The bears need impact A.S.A.P they need to sign 2 WRS for cutler to have targets to throw to.They also need to sign a OT this could make the draft alot easier then to target players of need.
Any of those WR's can still sign with their current team or any other team.
Vjax will probably resign with the Chargers. I dont see KC letting Bowe walk. Maybe Colston because they still have to sign Brees. Stevie Johnson is in contract talks with Buffalo. Who else? A washed up Reggie Wayne? We have 2 empty spots right now, who knows what will happen with Knox. Right know, we have Bennett, Hester, and Sanzenbacher. And if the FA we bring in gets hurt at all, those are our 3 starters plus a 4th-7th rnd pick if we draft like this mock.

and what if the WR they pick in round one gets hurt, or is a bust , etc
There is no guarantee in either scenario.
Getting a top WR via free agency is the smarter play. If the Bears fail to sign one, then WR in round one makes a lot more sense.

We may not get a top flight FA WR,
and we need at least 2 quality WR’s. Our current WR’s are by far the worst group in the league. We cannot continue to neglect the offense. I am sick of watching us put all our resources on defense and watching us lose games because we cant score more than 20 points without pick 6’s or punt returns for TD’s.

Which is why I said not if they sign a WR in free agency.
If they do no, then there is no need to burn a 1st round pick on another, if they don’t then maybe they take a WR first, but only if there is a legit 1st round caliber WR available at 19.

You won't get a "top flight" WR with the 19th pick either
You’re looking at a guy who will probably be the #2 or 3 at first and will take some time to get acclimated to the NFL

I think you have it switch. V Jax is the least likely to stay while Colston is the most likely coming back. Make NO mistake, Bress WILL resign and Colston will be the next guy. Meachem is leaving if anyone and Wayne will replace him.
I hardly think Reggie Wayne is washed up, his style sort of prevents it. He is a possession guy not a speed or elusive guy. Also, a competent QB would improve his play (Painter is not great).
The Saints have a nightmare of an offseason to deal with
4 great players they must resign in Drew Brees, Carl Nicks, Marques Colston, and Robert Meachem. Carl Nicks is all but a goner given the major cash already tied up with Evans, and Drew Brees will most likely either get a huge contract or the franchise tag. Not a lot of money available for the Saints.
Vincent Jackson appears to be headed towards FA, as the Chargers may feel it is best to let him walk and get paid elsewhere. The Chargers have two good receivers that can step up in Vincent Brown and Malcom Floyd. They’ll probably draft another receiver in the early rounds to replace Jackson.
Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Agreed about NO's impending offseason woes, but I can see them letting Colston walk...
…initial reports say that he won’t give a hometown discount (read that in 2-3 places, not sure if it’s true… but wouldn’t be a good sign for them). I think most receivers can thrive in that system, so overpaying a WR may not be the savviest move.
That being said if our offseason meant getting Nicks AND Colston… I’d be on cloud nine.
VJax… I just don’t see it. If he gets franchised, doesn’t he essentially get the guaranteed money he wanted if you include last year and this year’s franchise? Plus considering his production isn’t that great, does he think he can get a lot more on the open market?
Bears needs
If I had a vote I would go hard after Colston sign him and then try to pick up P. Garcon. I think Ingram would be rookie of the year teaming him with JP and the line man Adams would also be a great pick…the bears need to look hard at OLB I am just a fan but I see 7 or 8 very good fits that can be picked up in the late rounds of the draft…they have two of the best now and they only a good player this year not a great one…Drafting a CB is always hard so this one will require some leg work…wish the team the best…fan for life
I'd be elated if the draft fell like this...
…but I think most of those guys go about a half round earlier than you have them. Obviously that’s just a guess, and boards are going to shift as we get closer, but it seems like most of those names would need to fall to us in that round.
Adams could go near the top of the 2nd, considering the dearth of LT talent.
Hosley is a top of the 2nd round pick in most years, I think, but maybe CB depth pushes him down.
I could see Spence going mid-2nd to late-3rd, that’s a crapshoot.
That would be four guys who could start on our team next year in the first four rounds. That would be incredible. Let’s hope it falls that way.
