He has a reputation

as a good scout. Those guys bounce around from team to team.

He wasn’t thought of by anyone in football outside Halas Hall as a future GM. I could get behind the idea of hiring a relative unknown if he wasn’t an unknown at the end of his career. He has no experience with pro personnel, contracts, roster construction or salary cap management.

If this is true, the Bears are taking an enormous gamble here, and not a gamble that gives anyone any real confidence that it will succeed. I don’t think this is a case of the Bears being cheap, as a GM makes peanuts relative to a team budget. I think this is the McCaskey family influencing the decision and bringing in someone they know.
