Surprised you have him at number 3.

Hope he’s that low on everyone’s draft board.

Right, but I hadn't seen much of Dennard.

From what I gathered SMD did this from film analysis.

Dennard is solid

You won’t have much bad from him. The reason I have Kirkpatrick low is because his stock has fallen because of off field issues. Same as Janoris Jenkins.

Honestly Kirkpatrick could be the #1 corner on this list if he could A) keep his nose clean and B) not play the ball so aggressively all the time which will cause trouble against double moves at the next level.

I don’t think he will be there at #19 because I think he will be the 2nd CB off the board, somewhere in the 10-15 range.

If the Bears can get Dennard, or even Jenkins with that 19th pick they will have a #1 quality CB for the next 10 years.
With Dennard you don’t get that risk of off field issues, because he seems to keep clean

Actually

Kirkpatrick may not be the 2nd CB taken, because some may see him more of a zone-type player than a true man-on-man player. Jenkins, on the other hand, looks more the part of a real man-on-man player. With that calculation, I see Kirkpatrick ranked as the #3, maybe #4 CB in the draft.

Kirkpartick played a lot of Man at Alabama due to their 3-4 defense

Yet he did better in zone

And is viewed more as a zone type player in the NFL.

I know it's really early but Harrison Smith seems like the exact player he bears would target.

He has great size at like 6’2 and 220 and he also has above average speed. From everything I have read, he is a very smart player who almost never gives up the big play and plays the run very well too. To me that sounds exactly like what the bears look for in their safetys.

by TheHesterEffect on Jan 25, 2012 6:55 PM CST via mobile reply actions

He's too slow too be a FS, but doesn't play the run well enough to be a SS

honestly if he puts on 10-15 pounds he could play SLB

Honestly

It’s a very shallow safety draft. In last years draft he probably would have been 4 or 5 on my list.

I like him this year because he is the best SS in the draft, Mark Barron I believe is the best FS in the draft. Barron could go late 1st early 2nd and Smith is a mid to late 2nd or early 3rd

Wait, how is it that

he doesn’t play the run well enough to be a SS, but put on 10-15 pounds and he could play SLB?

Also, for Safeties, what happened to Robert Lester? Or Winston Guy Jr. from Kentucky? Granted neither are first round guys, but how do they stack up against your top 5?

Lester will return for his senior year

but I agree about Winston Guy Jr, he seems like a real nice pick for us in the 3rd.

by DutchBear on Jan 26, 2012 4:22 AM CST up reply actions

Because he also doesn't cover well enough to be a SS

SLB in the Bears cover 2 system relies on the ability to cover TEs and RBs, as well as minor run stopping. As far as other systems go, he may fit as a SS, but I couldn’t see him making it in the Bears system

As far as Winston Guy goes, he’s not in my top 5

For a CB in Lovie's defense

Hosely’s tackling or lack thereof wouldn’t cut it. And doubt the Bears go for Jenkins, with the question marks surrounding him. I’d take Chase Minnifield over both of them. I also like DeQuan Menzie, Casey Hayward, Donnie Fletcher and Keith Tandy but probably not as top 5 guys.

Matt Bowen

talked about Chicago as a team who might take a look at Upshaw as a 4-3 DE. Seems like an interesting idea.

by DutchBear on Jan 26, 2012 4:48 AM CST reply actions

I don't like that idea

He is much better suited as a 3-4 OLB.

Don't sleep on Upshaw.

3-4 OLB’s usually give me doubt, but some guys are just football players. The Senior Bowl (for what it’s worth) could be a little window into what he’d look like at DE. I don’t know what he is or what he will be, but I suggest keeping an open mind on this guy.

From what Ive heard, Upshaw is really good with his hands and has great technique.

Mayock and those guys were talking about him in the Senior Bowl practices and said he can shed O-lineman like nobody’s buisness.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

by fortefan09 on Jan 26, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

I'd rather have Melvin Ingram or Whitney Mercilus

and KNOW that the guy can play DE

Well he has played 4-3 DE at Alabama

They have a 3-4 base, but come out in different looks a lot. He knows how to rush the passer with his hand in the dirt.

But

I’d still rather have Ingram or Mercilus who rank higher on my big board than Upshaw
