The Chicago Bears will be players in free agency this off season. With a team one year removed from the NFC Championship game, and coming off an injury fueled disappointing 8-8 season (after a 7-3 start), they believe the window is still open. The Bears better be lining up on someones doorstep come March 13th with an offer in hand for one of the top guys available. Check out the free agent photo gallery from Sports Illustrated and tell us who you think would be a good fit in the navy and orange.

So last year

Since all we could do is talk and speculate given there was no real offseason thanks to those blasted negotiations between the NFLPA and the NFL, when asked who I wanted the Bears to sign, I repeatedly said “Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks” like over 1,000 times, only for both of them to get tagged…

Peyton Hillis (only if he’s on the cheap and Barber leaves)
V-Jax
Carl Nicks
Marquis Colston

Two of these three would make me very happy. Oh, and that guy, what’s his name, Matt Forte, I think.

by lmfsilva on Jan 26, 2012 4:43 PM CST reply actions

i wonder

how cheap hillis would be and if him or colston will leave but V-jax seems to be inevitable and Nicks also a question but being Oline he will sign somewhere else bc we dont need linemen according to our old buddy jerry :D

by ChicagoStyle on Jan 26, 2012 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

the saints will let go at least one

and I’m sure it won’t be brees. however, he also looks the kind of guy that would accept a few millions less if that allows keeping his unit intact. everyone else seems to love him for that, so I wouldn’t be completely surprised if all three stayed.

hillis is an interesting case to follow. last season he was beasting in the redzone, but comes from a bad season, and the browns could draft a new rb with more upside. I was never in the “kill barber” camp, but adding hillis along forte would put us so ahead of the league in the backfield it’s not even funny. rb contracts are tough to predict, so if he goes on the cheap, I wouldn’t hesitate.

Mario Williams is interesting.

Arian Foster is looking to get paid (he’s a restricted FA). Their defense actually did just fine with Williams out. They’re probably in the hunt for a WR opposite an aging, oft-injured, but still dominant Andre Johnson. I guess its possible they let him walk.

by Mike Mueller on Jan 26, 2012 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

i want

1.) Forte… PAY THE MAN!
2.) Vincent Jackson… big target for Cutler
3.) Nicks… shore up the line
4.) Cliff Avril/Mario Williams… either would make a good compliment to Peppers
5.) Finley… another large target, plus we take one away from “them”

Two or three of these would make me VERY happy!

…. at most we are lookin at 3 highly touted Free Agents . With that in mind my top three guys would be Carl Nicks , Mario Williams or Cliff Avril & Colston or Bowe . But if we can only sign two guys gimme Mario Williams & one of the WR’s .

I don't see more than 1 guy thats in the top 3 FAs at his position joining us

with one or two other top 5-10 FAs at their positions joining.

If its free, take two.

by T.J. Shouse on Jan 26, 2012 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

We are only going to get one of those guys..

I say one of Colston, Bowe or VJax as our top priority, then a CB like Brent Grimes. Beyond that, I would say we don’t have a lot of cap room for big time FA without a big shake-up like trading Hester. If we did trade Hester, I would say go after a DE or a lineman. The rest of our holes can be addressed in the draft and with lesser FA signings.

by bassist33 on Jan 26, 2012 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

It's almost that time, isn't it?

Right off the bat, the guys I really want the Bears to target are Vincent Jackson and Mario Williams, with Carl Nicks being a nice bonus. But, the cap space may not allow the Bears to do such, so if they can get both V-Jax and Super Mario (Williams), that will make me one happy sailor lol

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Mario Williams is an unrealistic dream

He will want a Julius Peppers type of contract. and if not Peppers type of money (around 80-90mil overall) he will want somewhere in the ballpark of 40-50M

That’s way to much to pay for a 2nd DE

I mean, my offense and DBs are like that, but my front 7 picks never quite work out…

by BOBdaBEAR on Jan 27, 2012 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Let's be real

There’s no way Williams or Nicks are gonna be let go. Yes, Houston did ok without super mario but they know how good he is. The Saints also know that without a good o-line they don’t break all those records. Realistically we’re looking at maybe Finley, Bowe, Colston, or Avril actually being available. I would be quite happy with any of those, Bowe being my first choice, Finley second, Colston third and Avril fourth

by boydvv54 on Jan 26, 2012 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Nicks could go based on the Saints having to resign Brees and

trying to bring back Colston and Meachem while Nicks goes for a bigtime contract. Williams ain’t going nowhere though.

If its free, take two.

by T.J. Shouse on Jan 26, 2012 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

On second thought

Mario Williams may be allowed to test FA, because theTexans’ defense played rather well in his absence this year. It’s not likely, but it remains a possibility.

I would be ecstatic

If we could sign VJax and possibly Finley on offense. And Averill and Finnegan or Grimes on defense.

by JimmyMack on Jan 27, 2012 4:44 AM CST reply actions

Buy up Forte...

and get a WR, LB, CB, and DE. Then draft a OT, OG, DE, RB, WR, TE, LB, CB.

There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!

by LostInSTL on Jan 27, 2012 6:05 AM CST reply actions

It's funny, but on further review I don't see a lot of separation between the realistic options.

I view free agency, this year, as an opportunity to fill glaring holes so that we can be in a position to draft the best available. My other criteria is age. We can’t keep adding older players to an already “vintage” core – we have to get players in their mid-late twenties, who can both help up now and also when this generation of Bears stars retires. The key areas, to me, are WR and DE.

I’d say the primary one is WR. Duh. And there are three players to target who are between 25-28, all of whom have multiple 1000 yard seasons and size (6’2-6’4): S. Johnson, Colston, and Bowe. Does it particularly matter who we get? I don’t really think that it does, so long as we don’t take Vincent Jackson – who will be 30 when the season begins. The point here being to give Cutler a big (or more to the point, not diminutive) WR that will remain in his prime for years to come.

As for DE, again, there’s three age-compatible options: Williams, Campbell, and Avril. Between Avril and Williams I actually think we have a better chance at Mario – not only is he coming off an injured year, the Texans are well above the cap, and his replacement played lights-out all year. Again the essential point is to avoid Robert Mathis. How good would it feel, in three years, when Peppers starts to talk retirement, to have Mario Williams to build around? Nearly as good as seeing them on the field together for the next three years.

Success in today’s NFL is predicating on throwing the ball and hitting the quarterback. Those are our biggest needs. And before we start throwing the offense line under the bus, I’d like to evaluate their play under an offensive coordinator who isn’t sitting behind the wheel himself. They got no help from Martz. Nil. Zed. So, to my way of thinking, I’d rather see a boatload of money thrown at Mario Williams than, say, Carl Nicks.

Young FA WR, young FA DE, and then the best available each and every round.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Jan 27, 2012 6:10 AM CST reply actions

I know it won't happen but...

I would love to see Bowe, Nicks, Finnegan, and Mario Williams all on the Bears. Might cost just a tad too much though. Since our track record is terrible at WR and CB I think we should get those two in the FA Market and draft a LB and OL.

by jheun on Jan 27, 2012 9:24 AM CST reply actions

not Finnegan

he’s too much of a thug on the field.

by ChicagoBearOfAnaheim on Jan 27, 2012 10:35 AM CST reply actions

Deep.

Very deep FA class and the Bears could really fill a lot of gaping holes if they are willing to spend some money. Would be nice to add a WR, DL, CB or S and add someone on the line. I’m sure they won’t do all of these things but the Bears could definitely field a good team just by signing the right FA’s.
