Breaking: Jerry Angelo out as General Manager of the Chicago Bears

Details are still coming out, but multiple reports are confirming that Jerry Angelo is OUT as the General Manager of the Chicago Bears. More details shortly...

Brad Biggs via Twitter: "George McCaskey took over nearly a year ago as chairman of the board & we could be seeing 1st major signs of organizational change".

Also according to Biggs, the team sent out an internal email this morning saying that Angelo was no longer with the team. We are still waiting to hear from Halas hall for the official announcement. Stay tuned...

TEAM UPDATE: "President and CEO Ted Phillips informed Jerry Angelo this morning he will not return as the team's general manager."

And from the team's official site: "No other changes will be made. That includes Lovie Smith, who will remain Bears head coach."

There will be a press conference at 4pm today at Halas Hall.

I have a terrible suspicion that he’s been promoted to a new position to oversee Tim Ruskell as the new GM…

I like the "Lovie to GM / Angelo to HC" idea myself.

New GM, new HC, everybody wins!

Thank god!

But please, please don’t tell us Ruskell is the new GM.

I want Ruskell and everyone in charge of scouting thrown out of the building.

We have a pretty good head coach. He has his flaws, but he’s still better than most. Combined with the first experienced coaching staff he’s ever had to work with, they’ve taken a flat out pitiful roster to the NFC championship game, and to a 7-3 start this year before Jay’s injury.

Give Lovie some real friggin talent to work with, and we’ll have some winners for a while! Angelo has given us a pile of crap.

Doesn't take a genius to say "We should get Cutler and Peppers."

It’s the failure to build up depth and anything at other positions that proved his downfall.

Should've gotten Warner

a few years back, before he went to Arizona. But they didn’t want to put that kinda “pressure” on Grossman, to think he wasn’t “our starting quarterback”.

by Big Ike on Jan 3, 2012 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

how much of that was angelo vs. lovie?

this is the hard part in evaluating the GM/coach. who’s making some of the calls? i have a feeling lovie had a lot more say on some of the decisions (caleb hanie is fine as a backup QB, even though my OC thinks he’s terrible is the one that sunk our season) than we think. angelo didn’t draft great, so that’s on him. but things like not giving warner a chance to compete for the starter spot may have been on lovie, not angelo.

by guy incognito on Jan 3, 2012 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

If he would have drafted properly and Lovie would have developed properly

we wouldn’t have had to go after them in the first place.

Brad Biggs story

here

The Bears sent out an internal email Tuesday morning announcing that Angelo, who had a contract through 2013, is no longer with the organization. The decision came two days after the Bears finished 8-8, the fourth time in five seasons the franchise has not reached the playoffs.

The club has yet to announce a move and until chairman of the board George McCaskey has been heard from, speculation will be that the removal of Angelo might just be the first in a series of moves. When business ended Monday, it appeared only the fate of offensive coordinator Mike Martz was in serious doubt. Now, everyone’s future is in question as a new general manager could bring with him a new coach.

While Angelo pulled off a bold trade to acquire quarterback Jay Cutler in 2009, his drafts have failed to strengthen the organization. First-round draft picks have delivered little and even on defense most of the core players were brought in through free agency or were drafted for a different coaching staff.

When I assume, I'm not "making an ass out of u and me"... I'm actually putting u between me and an ass.

YEEEEAAAAHHHH BUUUUDDDDYYYY!!!!

George McCaskey showing he’s the boss! And I also have a strong suspicion that since Jerry Angelo has been FIRED, Tim Ruskell will NOT be the new GM, given that Ruskell would have taken over only if Jerry Angelo were to retire and name Ruskell his successor. Since George McCaskey decided to fire Jerry Angelo, it is highly unlikely Ruskell will even be staying with the Bears, and the expectation should be either they bring in someone from the outside, or George McCaskey takes over himself.

He was chosen to be the successor to Jerry Angelo when he retires, not when he was fired. The coaching staff may remain as is, but the management above is to be completely changed.

Tony Dungy?

Regarding Polian, I can’t tell if the last few years of the Colts’ ineffective drafting is Polian or him relinquishing control to others, including his son. I’d be hesitant to hire him. Also, as an Illini and Bears fan forced to live in Indianapolis since 2004, I can tell you that Polian isn’t well liked or respected around here.

I think Tony Dungy may be interesting. He’s said he doesn’t want to coach, but I think the door to him being a GM is open. He and Lovie have a connection and history. Dungy is well respected around the league, and I don’t think he’ll accept anything other than success.

by myronaiii on Jan 3, 2012 9:44 AM CST reply actions

Yep, replying to myself

670 THESCORE’s Bears beat writer (one of them) stated that he’s trying to confirm a rumor that Bill Polian was only fired because Jim Irsay (Colts’ owner) asked Bill to fire his son, Chris Polian, and Bill wouldn’t do it. So, both were gone.

The writer also stated Tony Dungy could be a horrible GM because he has no history of doing it, and nobody knows if he can accurately evaluate talent. Fair enough.

by myronaiii on Jan 3, 2012 9:51 AM CST up reply actions

Same reason I wouldn’t want Ditka brought in. Meatball humour aside, what evidence is there that he would be any good as a GM? Ricky Williams isn’t a good example.

by Spongie on Jan 3, 2012 9:55 AM CST up reply actions

Ricky WIlliams was drafted in 1999

In the same year Da’Coach traded big to get Williams, the Bears picked:

1) Cade McNoun
2) Russell Davis
3) Rex Tucker
3) D’Wayne Bates
4) Warrick Holdman
4) Rosevelt Colvin
5) Jerry Wisne
5) Jerry Azuma (Pro Bowl kick returner one year)
6) Rashard Cook
7) Sulecio Sanford
7) Jim Finn

I would trade the entire Bears 1999 draft for Ricky WIlliams (who is still in the league)

In fact if you look at that draft, there are very few teams that you wouldn’t trade the entire draft for Ricky Williams.

by sabbath999 on Jan 3, 2012 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

That hardly supports the case for Ditka being a good first-time GM, though. We’d trade most Bears drafts of that era for a pizza.

This could mean a lot of things.

New GM’s don’t like to come in with HC that they don’t pick. If Lovie is let go, we’re in rebuild mode.

If Lovie is retained, we could have a hard time luring a quality GM to Chicago.

We’ll have to see.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 3, 2012 9:53 AM CST reply actions

I think the new GM should have his say of who he wants coaching the team.

Aren’t we in a rebuilding mode anyway with the lack of depth on this team?

I agree completely with your statement of attracting someone good if he’s told he has to retain Lovie. If he has the option and decides to let Lovie remain for another year with a mandate of win or else, that’s okay but I’d rather see us start over from a team leadership perspective and put all the players on notice that the new organization will not tolerate mediocrity. That doesn’t mean we can’t compete next year with the proper moves, look at the 49ers.

Between Cowher and the Steelers’ front office, they did a good job of drafting and developing talent to remain competitive. We’ve missed four of the last five postseasons, though Lovie phrases it as having made one of the last two…

I agree...

Lovie has kinda grown on me as I’ve come to realize the pile of suck Angelo gave him to work with. And he has the locker room and his players want to play for him. Yeah, his voice is annoying, and he needs better clock management/challenge skills. But he wins with mostly crap, twist ties, and duct tape. Case and point NFC Championship game last year.

Ruskell and the entire college talent evaluation team needs to go with Angelo. Fresh set of eyes on everyone and every position is exactly what this team needs to wash the stain of koolaid off a lot of the roster and get real. Maybe we finally have a McCaskey in charge who wants to win?

by Ortons Neckbeard on Jan 3, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

Lovie is lucky that he's surrounded by good scapegoat candidates

Like JA and Martz.

Now he buys himself a season or two to prove he’s truly a good coach.

I’m still of the opinion he’s a great “players’ coach” and a horrible game manager.

Why couldn’t this have happened earlier, anyway? It’s screwed up that this came right after JA’s first arguably good offseason. But it didn’t turn out to be good since he decided not to bother finding a capable backup QB for yet another season.

Sure it can

If the guy you hired to run the offense says the backup QB you provided is crap, you listen to him. There was no incentive in keeping an undrafted free agent other than a cheap contract.

Martz proclaimed his dislike of Hanie

by LRT on Jan 3, 2012 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Someone should have listened to Martz

I’m in the minority in that I think Martz should be allowed to have complete control over the offense, and that he should be given at least one more season to make this work. You can’t make something work when you’re handicapped in important personnel decisions by your GM, and prevented from making changes by your HC.

by dm1982 on Jan 3, 2012 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Or was it the GM handicapped by Martz?

Roy Williams, Josh McCown etc etc. were brought in because they had previously played in Martz’s system, not necessarily for their proven talent in recent seasons. Sure McCown turned out alright, and I think REW was mediocre, but would Angelo have acquired someone else if Martz’s system wasn’t “too complicated” for others?

Just playing devils advocate. I’m glad as hell Angelo’s gone.

E.F.K.

by DaBearBus on Jan 3, 2012 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

I'm glad too

I can’t be too sure because I’m not there in camp, during practice, in the film rooms, etc… but I think it’s possible too much is made out of this “complicated offense” thing. I go by looking at it… it doesn’t look any more complicated than Ron Turner’s offense, or really any other offense. Unless there are 200 plays that go completely unused but are learned anyway.

But Mart did not like Hanie from day one, and the FO should have taken note of that.

by dm1982 on Jan 3, 2012 10:27 AM CST up reply actions

Hanie failing is on Lovie, not Martz

(or Angelo, for that matter). Martz made it clear he didn’t think Hanie could cut it. Martz was right. Lovie staying with Hanie for a few too many games literally cost us the playoffs this year. There’s no way Martz should be fired over Lovie. I get frustrated with him, but honestly, the offense was rolling before Cutler got hurt. Also, for all the talk about him being pass-crazy, we put up 2k yards on the ground.

by guy incognito on Jan 3, 2012 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed 100%

I like Martz.

Lovie is to blame for the failures of this team down the stretch due to:

1) his reluctance to make a change at QB.
2) his inability to make adjustments during halftime in close games.

Angelo’s time with the Bears … will go down as a mix of on-field success and front office missteps… A botched draft-day trade with the Baltimore Ravens, the failure of free agent signings Chester Taylor and Brandon Manumaleuna, (which cost the McCaskey family about $12 million for nearly no production) and the arrest of receiver Sam Hurd on federal drug distribution suspicion were the latest examples. Eventually, those things pile up.

When I assume, I'm not "making an ass out of u and me"... I'm actually putting u between me and an ass.

by Spongie on Jan 3, 2012 10:14 AM CST reply actions

That's just in the past year

He neglected to mention things from the failure of every single first round draft pick all the way back to the Warrick Holdman checkbox.

Angelo is a mediocre GM who became a terrible GM about 3 or 4 years ago. This move is long since overdue. If they bring in some Lovie sycophant things will not get better. Coaches should not pick their GM.

We need to start over as the Cubs did. We are completely outclassed on the roster by 2 teams in our division. There is only 2 roster spots (RB and RDE) where we are stronger than the Packers on the starting offense or defense. You can’t just keep putting a patch on things because the coach wants to save his job rather than rebuild the right way.

The bigger issue is drafting someone worth paying. That was Angleo’s major failing.

by Virto on Jan 3, 2012 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

But the Bears need to make shrewd, possibly costly FA acquisitions

This team can’t become a league power through one draft, and this team has the core to build into a league power.

by dm1982 on Jan 3, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

and the Bears have shown recently that they’re willing to make big money FA moves.

The bottom line is this: the window of opportunity for a lot of these guys is closing. They have a year, maybe two, to really have a chance to win it all. The Bears NEED to start drafting development players that they don’t automatically red shirt or dump on the practice squad.

by Virto on Jan 3, 2012 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

I’m not sure a team who handed out massive contracts to the likes of Tommie Harris, Vasher, Hester and Peppers (albeit not all of them wisely) can really be regarded as cheapskates, and that’s even less likely to be the case when the salary cap floor kicks in.

It's definitely rare

But to already see an announcement directly from Halas Hall that Lovie Smith shall remain as the HC, and to see this move being completely tied with George, topped off with the fact George is HCoB, perhaps we could see a Jerry Jones or Al Davis type take-over, where George would be making all personell decisions.

Might keep him around through the draft

It would be hard for a new GM to come in without having the benefit of all the scouting reports and whatnot that Ruskell and his staff accumulate over the season. My guess is that unless the new guy can “borrow” his draft info from his former team, he’ll pick Ruskell’s brain and then kick him out the door.

To make an announcement that Lovie Smith will remain as the HC, and to see this move have George’s fingerprints all over it, perhaps he could be taking over all operations.

I doubt it. I think you're reading WAY too much into that statement. Lovie is staying but for now but who knows what the next G.M wants. If the goal was to fire Angelo to maybe bring in Polian.....

Then I can see Lovie staying, especially since he’s from Dungy’s coaching tree. But again, who knows who the next G.M will be and I doubt George will be the GM. Besides he has no experience in that field. He ran the ticketing department until he was made the Chairman.

by frenchbears113 on Jan 3, 2012 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah for now though. For God's sakes Jim Caldwell still has a job even though the Polians promoted him.

The next G.M of the Colts will more than likely fire him. Same instance here most likely. The next legitimate G.M will evaluate Lovie and most likely let him go. It’s not out of the question to see him back but new leadership almost always brings in their guys.

Doesn't matter. New management almost always brings in "their" guys.

Lovie was responsible for keeping his team in the race and he failed to do so. He stuck with Hanie as the starter and his defense crapped themselves at the worst times. Failure to make half-time adjustments, an itchy trigger finger with personnel i.e benching Jennings and letting Bowman get abused are on Lovie and his staff.

Awful job?

Brackett, Mathis, Freeney, Bob Sanders, are/were not bad at all. Injuries happened to two of them, and their is no question for years Mathis and Freeney were the best DE tandem in the league. Besides, this team has a good defense, and we need help with the offense, his specialty lol.

The difference is that the Colts’ defense is built to go after the passer when Peyton Manning puts them into a lead – their run D hasn’t been much to talk about for a while.

by Spongie on Jan 3, 2012 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

First and Foremost

We don’t have to worry about defense for a good while since we already have a pretty good defense in place.

And second, Bill Polian has drafted for coaches who run schemes that are nearly identical to what the Bears run on both offense and defense. Jerry Angelo of all things did him a favor getting him a good RB, QB, and D in place. Now Bill Polian can take care of the rest regarding the needs of the team. We need WRs, and Polian knows how to get good receivers.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 3, 2012 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Our defense is getting old pretty fast and Polian either hasn’t placed much emphasis on – or has been unable to find – run-stoppers. Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman and probably Peppers will be gone in a couple of seasons and then what?

Once again, look at the Colts: great passing attack, great pass rush. Take the lead and let the pass rush loose. We might be able to work with a GM who uses that blueprint but I’m willing to cast my net wider before making a decision.

When I assume, I'm not "making an ass out of u and me"... I'm actually putting u between me and an ass.

I'd take Tuck and Osi over Freeney and Mathis. If their defense was loaded with good players why could they NEVER stop the run.

I have never seen a Colts D with the ability to stop an opposing team’s running game. The Colts D has never been elite even with those guys. The Bears D on the other hand was considered elite and is still a top 10 defense.

That may be good and true

If Polian came to Chicago, which already has a good defense as well as a good defensive minded HC in place, it could be a good idea.

As I replied to Spongie, perhaps someone else to consider is someone from the NYG organization. They’ve had some rather good drafts recently. And I would suppose the 1 thing I’d be worried about with Polian, is that he has never been one to be known for splashes in FA.

He's fallen on hard draft times though

Their O-line is suspect outside of vet Saturday, they have Wayne (33 yrs old), some young WRs that outplay their draft pick but aren’t established guys (sound familiar?), they’re lacking a complete defense outside of some great vets (Mathis, Freeney), and running back has been a disaster since E. My I start a list of possible replacements?

This is from my own comment in the fanpost by LRT stating that Mike Martz shouldn’t be back next year. And this situation is exactly the reason I felt the Martz post was moot – because without changing the real problem (GM), the Bears would just be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Step one, Fire Angelo. Step two, Hire a Real NFL Guru GM. Step three, have that new GM evaluate Lovie, then make a decision on Martz.

Here’s the list that I assembled:

Eric DeCosta – Baltimore Ravens – Director of Player Personnel
Ron Hughes – Pittsburgh Steelers – College Scouting Coordinator
Doug Whaley – Buffalo Bills – Asst GM and Director of Player Personnel (not sure about that porn email thing, though)
Nick Caserio – NE Patriots – Director of Player Personnel (probably unavailable, but why not try)
David Gettleman – NY Giants – Director of Pro Personnel
Tom Telesco – Indianapolis Colts – Director of Player Personnel
Floyd Reese – NE Patriots – Senior Football Advisor

Nobody on Green Bay tickles my fancy. Ted Thompson rules the roost there, and his minions seem to have little experience.

Ruskell? NO WAY. He was completely lackluster in Seattle. I’d like someone who actually had success in a previous post as GM – or someone who hasn’t been GM but deserves a shot.

Someone mentioned Tony Dungy? Again – NO WAY. His teams were classic underachievers, he never won the big one until he was gifted Peyton Manning, and he had to face Rex Grossman to finally win one. He’s also the guy who said that Mike Vick was mature and ready to return to the NFL, while criticizing Jay Cutler’s maturity.

Personally, I’d look long and hard at Eric DeCosta.

I also like the 'style' of the move....

…as folks have mentioned – that George McCaskey didn’t fire Angelo immediately upon taking control. We don’t know why he waited a year, but….

1. It’d possibly be very bad PR to fire a GM after winning the division and hosting the NFCCG, even if it would be the right decision; and

2. A good leader would give a subordinate in that position (who had success, but equally as many failures) a list of objectives and goals for the following year, and then evaluate.

I don’t know that #2 actually happened, but if it did, Angelo likely failed on most of the goals. The draft of Carimi, Paea, and Conte may be sound, but two of them ended up injured, and a veteran team like the Bears shouldn’t be depending on rookies, anyway. The fact that Enderle couldn’t even take the field is a severe indictment of Angelo and the draft. And the lack of depth at critical positions was the icing on the cake.

by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 3, 2012 11:08 AM CST reply actions

Defending Angelo

I know it’s fashionable to dump on Angelo, and he certainly deserves to shoulder the blame for the chronic failure to build up a competent offensive line despite having tons of cap room this offseason. But I think he gets a bad rap over the draft history.

I’ll get to the first rounders in a second, but lets start by acknowledging that the man drafted two absolute studs, and potential hall of famers OUTSIDE the first round (Briggs in round 3, and Hester in round 2). And, he got a whole bunch of other quality picks in rounds 2 – 7 over the years:

  • Tillman was a 2
  • Alex Brown was a 4
  • Vasher was a 5
  • Forte was a 2
  • Mark Anderson was a 5
  • Orton was a 4
  • Lance Louis was a 7
  • Chris Harris was a 6
So Angelo definitely did some good things in the middle/late rounds of the draft. The knock is supposed to be on his first round track record. But was that really so bad? I count only one true first round bust (Michael Haynes), one significant underachiever that could still be a bust (Chris Williams) and one other draft where he could have picked a future star but instead traded down for a mediocre talent in round 2 (Manning):

2002: Marc Colombo, failed with the Bears because of a knee injury, but started at LT for a Cowboys team that made the playoffs several times. The blame here should be for dumping him too soon, not for drafting him when he was healthy.

2003: Traded #4 pick to NYJ for two picks, who became Haynes and Grossman. Haynes was a bust. Grossman is a flawed player, but was the QB on a Super Bowl team and proved this year he belongs in the league as a borderline starter. For what its worth, the papers at the time called for the Bears to take DeWayne Robertson at 4, who turned out to be just as big a bust as Haynes when the Jets took him in that spot.

2004: Tommie Harris, arguably Angelo’s best first round pick until injuries derailed his career. If you had a crystal ball you’d take Vince Wilfork instead, but for several years Tommie looked like the steal of this draft.

2005: Cedric Benson, like Colombo a player that failed with the Bears for largely unpredictable reasons, only to excel elsewhere. Maybe a better GM could have diagnosed the issues that would keep him from being good as a Bear, but I doubt it. Has since gone on to be a multiple time 1,000 yard back in Cincinnati.

2006: Traded down from a late pick and got Danieal Manning in round 2, followed by Hester. My thoughts on that are above.

2007: Greg Olson, a pick that was widely celebrated at the time and turned out to have been a good not great selection.

2008: Chris Williams, who was an injury risk, and has been mediocre when healthy. Jury is still out on whether this a “bust”, but it definitely looks like a bad pick that failed to help at a position that desperately needed help and still does.

2009 & 2010: Cutler.

2011: Carimi, who looked like a stud before his injury, and could end up either being a terrific pick, or perhaps the next Colombo.

So all in all? Not great, but certainly not nearly as bad in round 1 as people suggest. And with the later round talents he found, Angelo is a big part of the reason this team made a super bowl and made another NFC Championship game in his tenure.

Benson is still running over people, but just not for us.

The problem with the Benson pick really was JONES, who was in the prime of his career and we dumped him for NUTTIN.

by sabbath999 on Jan 3, 2012 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

First thought...

Angelo was at the helm 10 years, which gives him +/- 60 draft picks to work with.

You named 8 good ones, and 11 that are reasonable or good, if not explainable. That’s about 33%.

Per Haynes – if Angelo drafts Troy Polamalu instead, it’s likely that both the Bears and Seahawks win Super Bowls last decade.

by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 3, 2012 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

Can't argue with you re Polamalu.

What makes that even more maddening is they had a need at the position, having lost Tony Parrish to free agency a year earlier and never having found a real replacement. And, Haynes was something like the 7th defensive lineman drafted in the first 14 picks, a pretty good sign you’re not getting great value.

Who’s to say if Angelo would’ve gone for Polamalu if he had passed on Haynes, but it would have made that draft class one of the best of all time if he had (would’ve been Polamalu, Grossman, Tillman and Briggs in the first four picks—a hall of fame SS, hall of fame OLB, pro bowl corner, and an interception machine at QB).

And the general reply to your reply is the wasted 2&3 round picks (Gilbert, Igelsias, Bazuin, Harrison), the exorbitant drafting of D-lineman, and chronic inability to build an O-line.

Nice job on this.

I really don’t like Angelo but you bring up some very viable points. Several of the things you’ve noted also indict Lovie’s ability to develop and evaluate players he had (Benson, Manning, Chris Harris, Olson). I think that Lovie’s involvement with personnel decisions and not handling the development of some of these guys well is totally overlooked in the universaly dislike of Angelo.

by BearFan611 on Jan 3, 2012 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

+1

I’m not an Angelo fan, either. But just looking at the list, you notice that many of these players went on to have modest-to-relatively-successful careers. “DMS syndrome” and poor development by the coaching staff certainly stagnated, if not completely derailed the careers of several of them.

Some of them left and went on to be more successful on different teams.

Trade: Fired JA vs Making The Playoffs As A Wildcard Without Cutler, Forte & Urlacher

Suppose a couple things had gone our way (i.e. Marion Barber didn’t meltdown, and one ball bouncing a different way) and we make the playoffs, without our injured players.

That might have been enough to save JA.

Would you trade missing the playoffs for JA’s head, or would you keep JA and be in the playoffs this year with our current injury outlook (i.e. most likely one and done)?

Good point

Every time anyone gets fired they go for personnel on the most winning organizations of the day. That’s why there’s a ton of coach roadkill from ex-Bill Belichick coordinators… which is why of course it can be a great idea or a TERRIBLE idea. Re Ruskell - Don't be fooled by the Seattle team that mollywhopped you

The Seahawks team is almost entirely John Schneider and Pete Carroll. Red Bryant was a Ruskell pick and we have several other decent players but all of our first-rounders with him are gone.

I’ve defended Ruskell for a long time but after the hiring of Jim Mora and now his draft classes aren’t panning out it’s looking more and more like he wasn’t good at his job. Our entire 2009 class is nearly gone save for Max Unger.

His best picks show flashes of greatness in the first few years (Lofa Tatupu, John Carlson, etc.) and then fall to pieces through injury or just have a hard decline.

You cannot hire Tim Ruskell to rebuild anything, it’s primarily his fault we have this QB mess because he wasted his picks on nothing defensive starters.

It’s not likely the Chicago Bears will use Tuesday’s press conference to announce the promotion of director of player personnel Tim Ruskell as the successor to recently fired general manager Jerry Angelo.

But it’s worth pondering potential replacements……

Packers director of football operations Reggie McKenzie will draw the most speculation as Angelo’s potential successor because of his relationship with Bears coach Lovie Smith.

It’s unknown whether Smith will play a role in the organization’s selection.

But according to sources, Smith and McKenzie are close, and the executive’s track record is undeniable since he took over as director of football operations in 2008, after working 10 years as Green Bay’s director of pro personnel. Since joining the Packers in 1994 as a pro personnel assistant, the organization has won eight division titles, three conference crowns and two Super Bowls. Interestingly, McKenzie’s daughter, Jasmin, attends Wheaton College……
