The Chicago Bears fire Jerry Angelo (overflow thread)

Now that Jerry Angelo is no longer employed by the Chicago Bears, we'd like to know who you think should be the next GM. Should they stay in house? Should they let Lovie buy all the groceries? Bill Polian was just relieved of his Colts duties... or another big name candidate perhaps? Vote in the poll, and discuss...

Wasn't the difference something like,

“No. I cannot.”

To my knowledge, certain things were not known.

Who actually voted for Tim Ruskell... I see one vote

Martz not coming back was almost a forgone conclusion after the stories about him not resigning a contract and rumors of him going to coach college…

He seemed

pretty clueless and is quick to get defensive if anyone questions a receiver or the passing game. He snapped on media back in training camp, I believe.

I’d like to see if someone else can get more consistent production from Hester and Knox.

Mark this as the day that the face of your franchise became your QB.

Jay Cutler is going to have a say in how this offense looks going forward and the direction this team is heading. That dude is more untouchable than his Head Coach or anyone else and today proved it. Welcome to the 21st Century Chicago Bears.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Jan 3, 2012 1:20 PM CST reply actions

I hope you're right

I think it’s more the case that Martzfence requires at least a season of learning and getting used to, and that you have to have the right kind of quarterback to do it, and that the odds of having a couple of backup QBs that can do it too are pretty much zilch.

Glad to be moving in another direction.

Bet the Tight ends are excited, too! Wonder what Greg Olson thinks?

I like the idea of McKenzie.

Close with Lovie, very well-respect and proven track record and could help us close the gap between the Packers. Polian is old and his son is part of the package deal. I also think since Martz is now gone that we should allow the new GM to hire an OC since he will be with Lovie whether he likes it or not. Hopefully we can get McKenzie and Tom Clements from the Pack together. I’d like that.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 3, 2012 1:20 PM CST reply actions

I have found a good article describing why Bill Polian would be a good hire at GM

From the Chicago Tribune:

The blueprint Polian would bring to the Bears created success with the Bills, the Panthers and the Colts. His son, Chris, also would have to be a part of the package but the Polian father-son combination in the Bears front office would represent an upgrade over the Angelo-Tim Ruskell tandem. If the Polians were able to pry highly respected Colts director of player personnel Tom Telesco away from Indy as well, it would be a coup.

And if that does not suit your fancy, then there is this guy:

If for whatever reason the Polian Plan falls through, then I would attempt to raid the Packers front office of their best available executive. Reggie McKenzie is the first name that comes to mind. Whatever GM Ted Thompson has done works and in a copy-cat league the Bears could do worse than trying to duplicate the success of their rivals to the north.

Anyway, back to Polian. His last 3 years have been seen as a steady decline in his team, the Colts; however, I also feel the decline has a great deals to do with the turnover in the coaching staff. When Bill Polian had his man in Tony Dungy, their success is unquestionable. As soon as Caldwell took over, things started to look shaky. And the O-line took a turn for the worse when Howard Mudd left for the fabled “dream-team”. He knows how to draft talented players, and better yet he drafted for coaches who ran the same system both on offense and on defense that the Bears do. He knows how to draft for his coaches.

The one major question mark that comes around, though, is not so much as with his success on defense as it is with his tendancies with FA. I’ve never seen him make a huge splash in FA. But, perhaps its because he never truly had to given his rather stellar overall success with the draft. It will be interesting to see what happens if he takes the job here, and there is immediate pressure to be aggressive in FA. One thing is for sure, he has a much better understanding on offense than Jerry Angelo ever had.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 3, 2012 1:22 PM CST reply actions

Polian is probably an upgrade, but I'm not sold on him.

Granted, his first round picks are always in the #25-30 range, but he hasn’t drafted a star player since Bob Sanders in 2004 (Antoine Bethea, maybe?). 2004! Has he even acquired a star player since 2004? I can’t think of any…

Comparatively, in that timeframe, Angelo’s gotten Cutler, Hester, Forte, Peppers. D Manning had some good years, even Henry Melton looks like an upgrade over who the Colts have had recently.

Maybe this means Polian is a good buy-low candidate. But Jerry Jones was once a dominant GM too…

by YaoPau on Jan 3, 2012 1:43 PM CST up reply actions

Not really the case

Bill Polian didn’t just build a great team in Indy, he built one of the best teams ever in Buffalo. Here is another great article from CSN about Bill Polian:

From 1986-1993 Polian was the draft wizard who assembled a Bills team that reached the Super Bowl in four consecutive seasons. In 1994 he moved on to become the key cog for the expansion Carolina Panthers, an organization that arguably had the greatest meteoric rise in NFL history by reaching the NFC Championship game in only its second year of existence.

And it happens to describe that he also did well in Carolina. Basically, he has had a positive impact with 3 different franchises. Not one other GM to my knowledge comes to mind when it comes to that. The man built teams that have been in a total of 6 Super Bowls, compared to Jerry’s 1.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 3, 2012 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

Polian has also been pretty fortunate...

He became GM of a team who not only had the #1 overall pick (which was Bruce freaking Smith), but also had the rights to Jim Kelly. Without having to do much at all, Polian got to start his career with two rookies who became 1st ballot hall of famers. Same thing happened in Indy with #1 overall pick (Peyton Manning) and the 2nd year Marvin Harrison.

by YaoPau on Jan 3, 2012 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

True...

but he was smart enough to make those picks lol…

He didn’t “Ryan Leaf” the 1998 draft and he sorted through the chaff in 1985 for the right DE as well (4 DEs went in the top 10 that year).

Still, in the long run, I don’t find any “stud drafts” in Carolina or Indianapolis’ history during his tenure….Though I did find a number of repeat pro-bowlers and potential HOF players that I don’t see in Chicago where we have 1 (Hester) that Angelo drafted to date. The depth of Green Bay is unquestionable, I like the idea of poaching Reggie McKenzie.

Actually, he didn't make the Bruce Smith or Jim Kelly picks, he made Thurman Thomas though.

Angelo drafted Briggs who has gone to 7 straight Pro Bowls and is on his way to the Hall.

by Shuggs on Jan 3, 2012 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Garcon's looking pretty good

but he hasn’t been studly lately in the draft, you are right…That tends to happen when many of your high profile positions are “locked in” on a football team though, doesn’t it? With Wayne and Harrison, no other receiver was gonna shine until Harrison left and Garcon is stepping up. When Clark went down, Tamme stepped up big time. Their O-Line has been troubling, and that is not good news for us, but they got locked into some vets who fell off fast (sound familiar) after a decade of success. Their RBs are talented but oft injured (E. James, J. Addai, etc) and with a bad line its hard to tell…Their ends were so good their tackles never got much play and zone corners/safeties often get overlooked, but their lack of ever having a star LB can be disturbing too. Dunno, overall, their roster minus Manning is probably about 50/50 and their drafts just south of that. Mathis, Freeney, Sanders all scores on defense and Wayne, Clark, Tamme, Garcon are all good finds on offense.

Give me some new blood

PFF nailed many of the less-heralded breakout FAs (Mathis, Tulloch, Durant, Babin), and they aren’t even scouts, they’re just dudes with NFL game pass who developed a nice scouting system. I look at the success of these finance/econ GMs in baseball and basketball, and I’d love to see a GM with a fresh take on game charting and analysis. I’m still amazed that, with all the young free agent talent out there and so many holes to fill, Angelo came away with just Spencer, Williams, Spaeth, and Meriweather.

Add to it the recent struggles of Polian and Belichick in the draft, and I’m not sure an established vet is necessarily a better choice than someone who’s trained in analyzing numbers and opinions. I’ll add that I’m probably biased about this… I’m currently in a stats master’s program. A student in my program who graduated last year interviewed for a job in the Packers’ statistics department. My professor said it’s 25 people trained in stats and scouting. As far as I know, the Bears have nothing comparable to that.

I'd take it...

It gives you a free pass for 2012…Spend the whole season evaluating Smith, his staff, and our collective player pool with everyone knowing it wasn’t your decisions yet, and then in 2013 the training wheels come off and you can cut/fire/trade at will.

It might actually be better than walking into our team Lovie-less…With a veteran player base that has almost ALL of your talent on defense so you can’t change systems on them anyway (Urlacher, Peppers, Briggs, Tillman all 30+, no stars/Pro-Bowl defenders under 30)…

And frankly, you get a QB for the next 8+ years which is the biggest monkey on the back for any and all GMs in the NFL, and can sign/retain a young pro-bowl running back.

The pieces are in place for early success (Defense, star QB, star RB) and you have a couple of years to evaluate, build depth, and prepare your team. Maybe I am just too glass half full.

I've seen the games with Denver.

I know he was a good QB before he came to Chicago. Yes, his footwork did improve and decision making seemed to improve as well. It’s also worth noting that having to deal with some of Martz’s quirks should have improved his overall game. Not being able to call audibles at the line should definitely help him in the future being able to do so with his next OC. Not being able to do what he wanted in situations should help him make the right decisions when he’s able to. Trust his instincts. Jay also has fully taken command as the leader of this offense and has evolved maturely. It might be ticky-tacky stuff but I’d still say it was a good learning experience for him and he has bettered himself because of it. I don’t think this is really something we can dispute.

I agree, and I'd like to think that Martz is better for having worked with Cutler

has been INSANE since Martz has been here. I guess Martz calls a play, it’s sent to an assistant who then sends it over the radio to the QB. How many 1st or 2nd play timeouts did we call this year because the play was late?

by Virto on Jan 3, 2012 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

do you really want a number?

roughly a dozen. in the first quarter.

by BOBdaBEAR on Jan 3, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Except for the fact that...

Cutler had to get on Martz’s case about throwing the ball so much and getting him killed. Once they balanced the play calling then the offense started to click. I would think that Cutler would be glad to see him gone.

He just scratched that

into Martz’ car.

That sounds good to me

The Ravens with an old Ed Reed and an injured Ray Lewis didn’t miss a beat in this season’s second half. Pretty amazing I think. Imagine the Bears without, say, Urlacher and Tillman.

He’d be a darkhorse, considering he doesn’t have OC experience, but no one can deny GB’s production at the most important position.

Not sure, will have to check on that. I did hear earlier that he was interested in the Penn State job.

Brett Favre has great football instincts

no doubt about that.

But I never saw anything that indicated an ability to (or a desire to) help impart football strategy or wisdom to other people.

In short, I doubt that Brett is cut out for coaching, planning, or mentoring. Maybe scouting, but I doubt he’d be content to do something as low-profile as that. Besides, his scouting would end up producing similar results to Dick Cheney’s Vice Presidential Search committee did in Summer 2000, LOL!

Thats a pretty damning statement from a former player

I wonder if that was a reason why big named FAs would stay clear of the Bears in the past

Given Jay Cutler’s fondness for him, Jeremy Bates — his former QB coach in Denver — would appear a strong outside candidate.
mikecwright Michael C. Wright
Tice logical candidate to replace Martz, but sources close 2 situation said Tice hasn’t yet met w/organization to discuss.
JasonLaCanfora Jason La Canfora
With Mike Martz out in CHI, as expected, OL Coach Mike Tice could gain more control of offense. Jeremy Bates available and worked w/Cutler..

I knew that much haha

I was just stating that as a likely and good scenario. Some consistancy has to remain with the offense.

Make Bill Polian the GM (look above for my reasoning) and then lather, rinse, repeat. Btw I certainly hope they don’t take months to find a new OC like the last time…

You could also have Bates be the OC and play caller if Tice doesn't seem cut out for it.

I see Bates as the obvious front runner

Question is does Cutty actually like the guy? Just because they worked together in Denver doenst mean they actually have chemistry.
I hope JC gets the most input of anyone, he has earned the right to have major influence on who gets brought it. Maybe now rollouts, bootlegs, audibles and dare I say “the shotgun” will be seen in Bear football again soon.

He's 23 and physically gifted

You don’t start him the past two years to bench him now.

by YaoPau on Jan 3, 2012 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

Unless we receive a significant upgrade at LT in free agency.

I’d be happy to let him be a swing tackle for a couple years to develop more, then we turn him loose as a more seasoned veteran that can hold Allen to less than 3 sacks.

in all fairness to J-Webb

1. Jared Allen is simply a beast. Not many guys that good with a high-motor.
2. Josh McCow may be (somewhat) mobile, but he’s still limiting the plays that are called.

by BOBdaBEAR on Jan 3, 2012 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

Right

if you’re giving up 3.5 sacks to somebody, I don’t mind as much when it’s a guy who ended up with 22 on the season, and in a meaningless game. Webb did a nice job against studs like Trent Cole, Elvis Dumeril, some Kameron Wimbley.

by YaoPau on Jan 3, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

and he was a 7th Rd pick, starting for the past 2 years. I agree we need an upgrade at LT, hopefully in this coming draft.

So many things if you're the new GM....

I think it’s worth noting the Bears have an extra 3rd rounder from the Olsen trade. I wonder how they will approach the draft and free agency?

I would approach free agency for your WR’s Vincent Jackson would be the first guy I call. I would use the draft to rebuild the defense at S, LB, CB and End.

by BloodHorn on Jan 3, 2012 3:08 PM CST reply actions

and more...

Reggie Wayne will likely get out of Indy and that is a really nice stop gap at receiver…Garcon is in a contract year as well but less likely to escape…Colston’s in a contract year and so is Bowe. I really want a trade up for Blackmon, damn the “trading away the draft” counterarguments, its what my heart wants :)

I wouldn't jump the gun on Wayne. Although he is the most likely out of the the big targets to be on the market

I can see the return of Manning forcing him to stay. That and I think his top choice would be the Saints as a replacement for the surely departed Meachem to play across from Colston.

Just got here, this made my day

So who can we hire that knows what a good offensive lineman looks like?

And Norv Turner is staying on in SD? Really? Really?

Whose job am I supposed to call for now?

by ES46NE10 on Jan 3, 2012 3:37 PM CST reply actions

I say trade a bunch of picks and try for a top tier wide out

deal the number 1 and both number 3s and try for a top ten pick and go for a guy like Justin Blackmon. Look what Stafford has with megatron, we need a guy who is a 24×7 double team for the opponents defense.
A great receiver,a few Olineman and maybe a tight end who is taller than 6-2 and we might be onto something.

White Sox fans need not apply.
