Phillips reaching out to former Broncos GM Sundquist
Hopefully the Bears do their due diligence in the process, and not lock on early like they sometimes do.

He wouldn't be too bad
But he is no where near as good a candidate as Reggie McKenzie. I’m thinking he is looking around for a Plan B, in case McKenzie chose the Raiders job instead.

Why would McKenzie choose the Raiders job over the Bears?
Just curious.

$$$$$$$$$$$
My guess would be money.

Do we know the Bears won't pay as much as the Raiders?
And is that the only reason we can think of, as compelling as money may be?

Well, additionally
You can live on the west coast, or you can live in Chicago.

He lives in the middle of nowhere known as Green Bay, Wisconsin
Anywhere else would be seen as an improvement.

His daughter goes to Wheaton College
Having grown up in Winfield, I’d consider that a negative.
But we simply don’t know where the man would like to live.

Supposedly
he wishes to stay in the area

Same here
And at this very moment it does not seem Mckenzie wants the job in Oakland.

We don't know what McKenzie wants
Money, location, franchise, power, whatever.
It’s only day one.

Based on this bit from my fanshot:
One take is that McKenzie has been slow to move toward the Oakland job because of interest in Chicago. But the Bears’ job only opened on Tuesday, and that was a huge surprise around the league, so McKenzie may only now be taking his long look at Chicago.

Based on nothing of substance then
if he is smart he is looking at all of his options. Nothing there to suggest he favors (or is down on) anyone at the moment.

He played for the Raiders once
maybe they will pay him more
maybe he thinks they are closer to be contenders
maybe he prefers Hue Jackson
maybe he likes dressing up like an extra from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

Typical Bears
So, instead of choosing the guys from the proven organizations that go to the playoffs every year (McKenzie, DeCosta), they choose an out of work GM who isn’t known as a strong talent evaluator. Freaking Bears!!!
Yeah, the first day of a talent search is always written in stone.
You should freak out a little more, I think. ;-)
by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 4, 2012 6:24 PM CST up reply actions
The one reason why he is a person of interest is because he ultimately is the one who drafted Jay Cutler to begin with
And he also is the one who drafted Brandon Marshall. But, this concerns me as well, he is basically no different compared to Jerry Angelo. Hopefully, its only Plan B at best.

It's going to be a looongg search, if folks keep freaking out
Not you in particular, mind you.
For all we know, Phillips is calling Sundquist out of due diligence, or for ideas on good OCs.
In any case, I think he’d be foolish NOT to contact a 49-year-old savvy talent evaluator. And I prefer McKenzie and DeCosta.
by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 4, 2012 6:32 PM CST up reply actions
Didn't the article say
that he wasn’t known for being a great talent evaluator? That he was known for being more active in trades and free agency? Isn’t that what we had in Jerry?
The Broncos from 2002-2007
When he was GM:
2002: 9-7
2003: 10-6
2004: 10-6
2005: 13-3
2006: 9-7
2007: 7-9
Notable draft picks during his tenure:
Clinton Portis
Jay Cutler
Elvis Dumervil
Brandon Marshall
Tony Scheffler
Not to mention the history before then. From the wiki:
Sundquist joined the Broncos in 1993 as a scout as Player Personnel Assistant (1992-1994), Director of Scouting from 1995-2001 and then promoted to General Manager.
At the age of 33 Sundquist served as College Scouting Director and was in that role during the Broncos’ back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1997 and 1998. He supervised pro and college scouting, and was responsible for salary cap and contract analysis. Sundquist was promoted to GM in 2002 by owner Pat Bowlen after being pursued by both the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons organizations. He was also a finalist for the President position with the Seattle Seahawks in 2004. He started at GM with five consecutive winning seasons, a franchise record. Sundquist left the Broncos following a 7-9 record in 2007 Denver Broncos season.
Recruited athletes
During his tenure, Sundquist helped Denver land players such as John Lynch, Daniel Graham, Al Wilson, John Mobley, Brandon Marshall, Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis (WAS), Reggie Hayward (JAX), Trevor Pryce (BAL), Brian Griese (TB), Deltha O’Neal (NE), and Nick Harris (DET). Sundquist was known for being one of the more active GMs in player acquisition through drafting, signing free agents and trades. Under Sundquist, the Broncos became one of the league’s most active traders. His most notable move came just before the 2004 season, when he dealt star running back Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins in exchange for cornerback Champ Bailey, another to obtain Dre Bly from the Detroit Lions, and a No. 2 draft pick that turned out to be Tatum Bell. He also engineered a 2006 draft-day deal with St. Louis allowing Denver to move from the No. 29 overall pick to No. 11, where they selected Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler. As a result, Sundquist’s GM term was the start of a franchise-record five consecutive winning seasons.
Not too shabby, I’d say.

Yeah, but
Cutler, Marshall, Dumerville, and Scheffeler were all in the same draft. It also seemed like Shannahan had more influence on grabbing those players.
I know I am overreacting, but why can’t the Bears just grab the guy from the proven, perennial playoff organization? Both of the guys are interested in the Bears job…
So your concern is
that he drafted three solid players in one draft?

But according to NFL.com, [Eric] DeCosta would be open to leaving Baltimore now and that the Bears’ job could “entice” him.

Make this two:

As always, the bolding is my doing.

Concur
He’s not the next hottest thing, but he isn’t a failure, has experience, certainly knows offensive talent. The Broncos had Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, and one of the NFL’s best offensive lines under Sundquist…The moves for Baily and Bly worked out well for Denver as well. An active trader, who will move up, who can spot offensive talent?
Not going to say he is my #1 option, but he has been decent.
"just as Gary Fencik will go down as the last person to catch a Joe Namath pass, Wootton will be remembered in NFL history as the last player to sack Brett Favre." - John "Moon" Mullin
It'd be foolish not to call him
And who’s to say, if the Bears landed DeCosta or McKenzie, that Sundquist wouldn’t accept a position as Scouting Director or Director of Pro Personnel, for example?
It’s not like the Bears would have to tear him away from a like position.
by Sweetness Lives On on Jan 4, 2012 6:41 PM CST up reply actions
I would be fine with that.
I just want a GM that can draft well.
Oh, and just as an aside
This is what happened in the playoff years:
2005: Lost Conf. Championship game to Steelers (Super Bowl Winner)
2004: Wild Card loss to Colts
2003: Wild Card loss to Colts
You’ll recall those are the Colts that went 12-4 in back to back years, before losing to the Patriots.

Seems like a solid alternative to me
And once again its not that he is bad at drafting players (see Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall) rather he is apparantly known more about big signings and trades, as well as knowing how to stay under the cap.

Solid reputation, for sure.
Sounds like a backup plan because his forte isn’t in the draft.
Didn’t Phillips say yesterday that he wanted to build the Bears through the draft?
