If Chicago likes Baltimore's Eric DeCosta for GM they better hurry
The Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta may have his pick of four teams that are looking to fill their general manager position. According to Sports Illustrated three teams have already asked permission to interview DeCosta (Bears, Colts, and Rams) and the Raiders plan to get around to him as well. He is long rumored to be the heir apparent to Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore, but he may not want to wait to run his own team. Sports Illustrated speculates that the Bears situation may be the most attractive to him. Check the SI article for more information by clicking here.

Good thing they've already contacted him the Ravens for permission!
Any word as to whether or not the Bears have received permission yet? It seems he may want to come to Chicago, so fingures crossed!

I’d rather get McKenzie from GB, Baltimore has been great at evaluating defensive talent, but aside from Ray Rice, I’m not overly impressed with their offensive skill position picks

I thought it was Baltimore sent a 3rd and 4th to Arizona
and Arizona gave Boldin and a 5th rounder to the Ravens. Great deal for the Ravens, pissed me off for days that we couldnt make a deal for the guy who clearly wanted out of Arizona and would have been an instant upgrade to our WR corp. but alas JA is gone and better days are ahead.

The way I see it, we are "win now" because of the defense's age. That means we need offensive additions to come via FA, and defensive depth via draft.

Well
saying “except for Ray Rice”, you don’t like their skill position picks on offense is kind of an odd assesment. A starting offense has 5 skill position players (QB, RB, TE, WR, WR). Since you are leaving out Ray Rice (which is a big one to leave out, since he is one of the most valuable RBs in football), you are saying you don’t like the other 4 guys.
One of their starters (Boldin) was brought in through free agency, so he doesn’t count.
The other starter, Torrey Smith, caught 50 balls for 800+ yards and 7 TDs in his rookie season. For the record, that would far exceed anyone on the Bears (damning with faint praise, but still).
The leaves Dennis Pitta, the TE, and Joe Flacco. Dennis Pitta is a great blocking TE, bu also caught 40 passes this year. Those 40 catches are more than any Bears WR or TE this year. Not sure how you can have a problem with him as a 4th round pick.
And then there is Flacco. He is somewhat inconsistent, but he isn’t horrible. And do you dislike him so much that you would just flippantly dismiss someone regarded as one of the top future GMs in football?
DeCosta has been with the organization since 1996
The list of players signed and drafted while DeCosta has been working with Newsom, is star studded to say the least. And under the past few years, he has helped to not only build depth on a championship caliber defense, but has helped in building an offense that is on the rise.

Do you know

Would have to apply
7.7 mil to Forte if they Franchise him for 2012 according to the Suntimes article….

you're right about the safety play though, it just hasn't been consistent, no matter who's played there

First and foremost, the Bears are relatively healthy in terms of the salary cap, which is expected to be $120.37 million in 2012. One NFL executive said the Bears are projected to be $20 million below the cap, the most room of any team in the NFC North.
An estimated $7.7 million should be set aside for the franchise tender of Matt Forte. And with the salaries of most of their other top players locked in, the Bears can allocate some of the remaining $12 million to keeping some key free agents, a pool of players that includes Kahlil Bell, Corey Graham, Israel Idonije, Tim Jennings, Amobi Okoye and Roy Williams. In addition, the Bears could create more space by releasing some veterans, such as Marion Barber ($1.9 million) and Frank Omiyale ($1.8 million).

Ya
if thats the case I can not see decosta being the top choice…..I saw a report at ESPN Chicago saying that decosta and les snead are two of the top choices for the Bears…..
A league source told ESPNChicago.com Thursday that the club is “meticulously vetting” Atlanta Falcons director of player personnel Les Snead as a candidate to bring in to interview.
Also, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter Thursday that the Bears requested permission Thursday to interview Ravens executive Eric DeCosta. He is believed to be the top contender for the job, according to multiple sources, but he also will interview with the St. Louis Rams, according to reports…..
Snead currently works closely with Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who went to Atlanta in 2008 from New England, where the Patriots were 77-17 during his tenure. Snead, who has a strong reputation as a pro scout, was in charge of Atlanta’s pro scouting operations when he was promoted to director of player personnel in 2009.

I don't think chemistry will be an issue
He is not the person who decided which defense to run, it’s the HC’s decision to run the 3-4. He is simply doing his job (well) by getting his coach the players and talent to run his schemes on offense and defense. Also, what he definitely neglected to state was the Ravens won the Super Bowl when the Ravens still ran a 4-3 scheme.
This whole chemistry “issue” is absurd to me. DeCosta has just been his job.

Haha, I can see it now:
ESPN Reports: Bears botch draft trade, send all their picks to Baltimore. Somewhat ironic, considering last years draft pick trade mess up. New GM decosta is says " I just don’t know what happened ( wink wink).
Next day
BREAKING NEWS: Bears GM Eric decosta resigns, then re-sign with ravens.
Prov 6: 21 - 22
if that happened,
bears would be able to file a complaint to the commissioner for tampering by the ravens, which would result in the bears winning back their draft picks, and probably receive a bunch of picks from the ravens in return. That would be dumb for the ravens to do for “revenge”. Especially since the screw-up wasn’t out of malice, it was just the front office being dumb.

I completely agree its Ted Thompson. He was trained under Ron Wolf, not McKenzie. McKenzie may have learned some things from Ted by now but I’d prefer DeCosta. Seems to have more upside. Plus he’s not Lovie’s friend like McKenzie. Had enough of those experiments.
Maybe a dumb thought here..
But to comply with the Rooney Rule, couldn’t the Bears just interview Lovie for the GM spot? Not to say I want that to happen. I’d really like to see them go after McKenzie.
