Bears sign CB Donovan Warren to contract
The Chicago Bears have inked cornerback Donovan Warren (5'11", 185 lbs) to a contract, according to tweets by Warren. He was surprisingly undrafted in 2010 after a very successful collegiate career for the Michigan Wolverines, and spent time on the Jets, Steelers, and most recently, Lions practice teams.
He will join the Bears secondary with hopes of making an impression on head coach Lovie Smith, who seems to be in a constant process of trying to solidify a unit that has seen its share of challenges over the last few seasons.

Aw, sweet, fresh meat.
How long before he’s the heir apparent according to those over-zealously attached to anything new and different?

He's our next PRO BOWL CB!!!
He’ll solve all our problems and be a shut down machine!!!!
Or not.
Seriously, I’ll temper any excitement since he’s been bouncing from practice squad to another. Not likely to see him take the field next year but ya never know.

That was friendly sarcasm good sir
But “Warren Island” does have a nice ring to it…..
"And furthermore, I think Carthage must be destroyed."
Huh?
They’ve signed a player without naming a new GM?

Only seven days after the season to sign players from practice squads
to futures contracts.
I'm a ninja.
Hmm..I can see why they did that
But still, it’s rather strange.

they did this last year too, signing guys like Nick Reed, Tank Tyler, etc. to future contracts
Think the only requirement is 3 years or less NFL experience

It's ok
I feel he’s going to be our next pro bowl cornerback!
When I assume, I'm not "making an ass out of u and me"... I'm actually putting u between me and an ass.
You ain't gonna hear that from me any time soon!
Although I’ll also be in bootcamp when most of the whole “FPB” talk starts up…

Ruskell is acting GM, think he signed him

And that's worrisome
Why is Ruskell signing players, when the Bears are looking for new GMs?

Why are you so freaked out
about them signing a guy who’s probably not going to be anywhere near the roster in the second weekend of September, 2012?

agree, think he's just competition at DB in Bourbonnais

Ehh...it's just strange
Never seen that happen before when a team would sign a player, even if it’s just a camp body, to a contract when they are on an active GM search.

they do this every year
The guys just have to have 3 years or less NFL exp. to be eligible

They have to not have been on any team's active roster the previous year to be eligible.

yep maybe it's the PS w/ the 3 yrs. or less requirement

Yup
..simly practice competition fodder for the preseason..and ya never know, he could actually turn out to be a fit(1% chance)
no idea, heard Phillips say Ruskell is acting GM when the press conference was on CSN
"i'd like to see us draft an owner." Jim McMahon, 1986
"We had the 80's, and Michael had the 90's." Otis Wilson
yes he did, that was a question someone asked at the press conf.
"i'd like to see us draft an owner." Jim McMahon, 1986
"We had the 80's, and Michael had the 90's." Otis Wilson
He said Ruskell would be in charge of scouting (which is no surprise, considering that's Ruskell's job)..
He never said anything remotely close to Ruskell being acting GM.

ok fine

OMG
What are the Bears doing? Why would they sign players that will handcuff the future decisions of the new GM? What if GM X doesn’t like this signing???

Are there any notable players who have gotten their big break after getting plucked of a practice squad in this manner?

I look forward to hearing about this guy a few times in the offseason and never again once the season starts.

Guy looks like he plays physical which I like in a CB
but what can one really tell from college highlights, heck Caleb Hanie has 10 great looking plays on his you tube glory reel from his days at Colorado State.

I don't hate this signing.
Looks like he’s capable in man coverage, his hands aren’t that great, decent size for a CB (I don’t know of too many bigger than 5-11). Michigan played a really strange 3-3-5 for the bulk of his tenure, but the secondary shouldn’t be much different from the 4-2-5 that the Bears currently practice (Moore is NOT a LB). I’d like to see how he works against similarly-sized WRs like Knox and Bennett before making a good judgement about him.
He's a camp body...
not sure if the Bears are looking at him as a safety prospect. Doesn’t seem to have the best hands or catch-up speed. Seemed to bite on double-moves a bit. Athletically, he seems like he could play the classic zone coverage in Tampa2. He looks like he needs some development in his overall technique, but he might be a fit as a SS.
There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!
This means nothing
Stop acting like this will affect anything they do in the future. What a waste of space!
