Schefter: Raiders to hire Reggie McKenzie as next General Manager
Some late news breaking this evening that might come as disappointment to Chicago Bears fans: The Oakland Raiders will sign Packers Director of Football Operations to be their next General Manager, per Adam Schefter.
McKenzie was being courted by Chicago for the same position, and many fans had expressed their support of potentially bringing in one of the key leaders from Green Bay who helped assemble the current Packers roster. But it looks like the Bears will have to keep looking...

Ah bugger...
Well it’s now DeCosta time! Seriously, I hope that guy takes the job with the Bears as the new GM.

Wasn't my top choice (like it matters). Kept hearing my friends who are diehard Cheesers tell me he wouldn't be a huge loss for them...
I am told he was the driving force behind the Graham Harrell pick.
DeCosta or bust?
"With all due respect, and I mean with ALL due respect...that idea ain't worth a velvet paintin' of a whale and a dolphin gettin' it on."
DeCosta is definitely the favorite now
Sundquist wouldn’t be too bad of a hire, though.

Excuse me, Dane. "He was behind the Graham Harrell signing".

He was a practice squad guy for them.
Why would that make a difference when judging the performance of a personnel man?
I'm a ninja.
He was a practice squad guy for them, after McKenzie (apparently) was adamant that he get a shot. That means they gave him a spot during camp.

So I will rephrase. McKenzie was "adamant" about giving Graham Harrell a camp spot. I think that speaks to his ability to judge talent.

Okay; I guess signing Harrell to the practice squad trumps
him bringing Rogers and Flynn on board.
I'm a ninja.
Other than being a 3rd string QB on the Packers is there something about this Harrell guy I should know?

lol
you’re saying that he has a strong presence in Green Bay’s FO. lol but saying he was the driving force behind Harrel’s signing isn’t quite the best way to illustrate that…
At no point did I ever state "he had a strong presence in GB's office." You are mistaking what Dane is saying for what I am saying.
So, there’s that.

Because I am sure you have it on great authority that McKenzie hand selected Rogers and Flynn like he hand selected Harrell. Different situations completely.

The question is:
Was that absolutely McKenzie who brought in both guys, or was it Ted Thompson?

Apaprently we can criticize McKenzie for signing a QB to the practice squad,
but not give him credit for the #1 and #2 QB on the active roster…
I'm a ninja.
"Criticizing" him doesn't mean I don't think he was solid.
I am just not going to be enamored by him simply because he was apart of the Packers front office….like a large percentage of this website has been. Maybe including you?

He played a key role in building one of the best rosters in all of football.
But, because he was a Packer, let’s only focus on Graham Harrell?
Give me the coaches, executives, players, that give us the best chance at winning a championship. I couldn’t care less where else they’ve worked.

Yeah, I think we all do. I'm just not completely sold that Reggie was the best option for us. In my mind, he was #2 or #3.
And I named an example of one of his table-pounding decisions to expand on why I had that opinion. I have not “anti-Packer” bias. I do think the simple fact that Reggie has been a part of the Packers front office has basically made peoples’ minds up for them….perhaps without looking into the matter further.

It seems like Ted Thompson
Gets most of the success for the Packers’s tremendous success in assembling a talented roster. How big a role did McKenzie play? Or are they both overrated and does McCarthy deserve more of the credit?
Well said.

Is the fact that Lovie is here regardless in 2012 hurting our chances of getting the best man for the job
I wonder how much that would bother a potential GM to know they have no ability to bring in their guy right out of the gate?

Don't see why that is a determinate factor of being hired or choosing the job...at all. Lovie has one year to win. Its not like the talent drafted in round 1-4, and the talent contained within FA acquisitions won't transfer to 2013.

Although I wonder if Oakland is doing the same with Hugh Jackson? In any case, the Bears two primary competitors for Eric DeCosta are the Rams and Colts. Both of those teams are offering complete control compared to the Bears.

Hue Jackson is still coaching Oakland
And my die-hard Raiders buddy told me that Hue has a clause in his contract that he only reports to the Davis family.
So I think Lovie being on for 2012 would have little effect on the situation.

Snead or DaCosta for the Bears then
I prefer DaCosta but it seems to me the Bears office is leaning towards Snead.
yeah I prefer DeCosta too, Snead just doesn't have enough experience

Why does it seem to you
they prefer Snead? Every report I’ve seen says DeCosta is their preferred target. They are vetting Snead, but presumably that’s because they need more than one option.
Maybe he just didn't want to be the guy
that would have to fire his close friend, a year from now. He knows winning and they did coach together. But more likely, there’s a lot of power to be had out there in Oakland. That vacuum left by Al Davis, how fitting, eh?
Bearsh!tt!n It ain't obscene- I'm a Bears fan that likes hittin and exclamation points.
That's fine
I don’t know if McKenzie would be a good or bad GM. But it’s a loss for Green Bay (actually two losses, he’s taking someone with him), and a loss for Green Bay is a gain for us.
I don’t want their head scout (Dorsey) to be our GM, but maybe us interviewing him will make someone else want him and they’ll lose him too.
What's so bad about Dorsey?

Bad choice in my opinion.
One, he’s going to have a power struggle with Hue Jackson. And two, Oakland I believe doesn’t have a pick in this years draft until the 5th round (maybe 4th), doesn’t have a first round pick next year, plus several other picks from future drafts have been traded away.
Oh well, on to the next candidate.

haha.
Not necessarily a lot of power but I’ve read he has a direct line to team ownership. I could see that becoming a issue with Jackson and McKenzie if they don’t see eye-to-eye on something.
