Breaking: Chicago Bears Name Mike Tice Offensive Coordinator for 2012 Season

Photo

As first reported by Jay Glazer, the Bears have named Mike Tice Offensive Coordinator for the Chicago Bears in the 2012 season.

Bears promoting Mike Tice to offensive coordinator, putting him in charge of run game and pairing him w a passing game coach. Tice is OC tho
One caveat: he's getting a "passing coach." Quick thoughts after the jump.

Star-divide

This move is pretty logical. Promoting Mike Tice gives the ability to tie the futures of the coaching staff together after 2012, and is more enticing for a new General Manager than the prospect of hiring a possibly one and done coordinator. Now, if a new GM decides to clean house, they can go with a completely fresh start after the next season if they so choose.

Additionally, it works for Lovie Smith-it's commonly held opinion that during the season, Tice's desire to keep the ball on the ground more ties into Lovie Smith's off-the-bus running approach. That likely had as much to do with it as anything.

On the other hand...a passing game coach? That's a little odd, but the 49ers do it, and they're doing pretty well with it. Additionally, it will allow Tice the opportunity to continue working with the offensive line, which was the main reason he was brought to town in the first place.

The question remains, though...could that be something that Jay Cutler could/should have been more of a part of? With Tice having little actual play-call experience, this could prove to be a blessing in disguise or the nail in the coffin of coach Lovie Smith.

Denver fan here

Denver had a similar situation in 2008, with Rick Dennison as the OC/Run Game coordinator with Jeremy Bates as the QB Coach/Passing Game guru. It worked out pretty well for Cutler…

Same thing is going on in Arizona

With Russ Grimm as the run game coordinator, Mike Miller being the passing game coordinator, and a mixture of Whisenhunt/Miller calling the plays.

It may not be a total "ground attack" as suggested

More like a balanced offense compared to the (original) Martzfense.

My intent was not to suggest an all-out ground attack.

But as you said, to get back to using the run to help disguise the pass, thereby making the pass much more effective.

Considering Denver's going to proably cut Tebow after the draft...

Or after the first 4 losses next year, I REALLY REALLY hope he doesn’t end up here.

Cacti are prickly.

by crackedcactus on Jan 6, 2012 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

This may also allow the Bears to utilize more of Cutler's strengths

For example far more PA passes and rollouts/bootlegs. And, I may have found what appears will indeed be the plan for the Bears in FA according to the Moon:

The Bears’ first target in free agency is a wide receiver and Angelo was prepared for a major first-strike on or above the scale of his grab of Muhsin Muhammad in 2005. Assume that and cornerback will remain targets 1-2, with pass rusher and linebacker in the offseason equation.

So it will be anything but a pure running game with Cutler as a sideshow.

It'll probably look exactly the way it did during our 5 game win streak, except more effective if we get a WR and LT.

"You have a young group and if they start feeling too good about themselves, that’s not a good thing. So it’s my job not to let them. So probably they will hate me. But that’s OK too. My wife hates me and she’s still married to me." - Mike Tice

by badsamaritan on Jan 6, 2012 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

Read below that Tice will be bringing more of that offense we saw in the 5 game win streak

More of a run-based Deep PA type offense, the type of offense Cutler thrived in Denver with.

The Flaming Squirrel

3 oz Canadian whiskey
1 oz Frangelico hazelnut liqueur
2 dashes orange bitters
2 dashes Angostura bitters
overproof rum and orange peel for garnish

Combine whiskey (for fuzzy warmth), Frangelico (for general nuttiness) and bitters (for the tragedy of existence, &c.) in a rocks glass. Stir. Dip a wide slice of orange zest in overproof rum. Ignite over glass–when you burn your fingers, don’t come crying to me. Drop flaming zest into glass; garnish appropriately

Bates began his coaching career with Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive quality control coach from 2002–03; the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002. Best available option?

I haven’t done any research, but I do feel like under the circumstances, Tice is the best option. He knows our players and their strengths. He is familiar with the existing offense and even if he changes things can do it in a way that works for the players since he is making the same transition.
I have no personal reference, but Tice seems like a “devil is in the details” type coach -one who would rather run a simple play correctly than use misdirection to confuse ALL the players on the field. He know exactly what is line can and cannot do, he knows the ground game, and – if he can retain enough of the well-designed pass plays from Martz – he can use the existing playbook to follow the formula that worked in the second half of 2010 and 2011.
This should be good for the offense. Young players will be able to focus on technique and put the game into the hands of Forte and Cutler. Cutler never seemed comfortable with the the timing-type passes, preferring to read plays and find open receivers. This may also decrease reliance on tight routes by the receivers and allow the offense to flow a little more to hot receivers and respond to game trends.

Find out what the other team wants to do. Then take it away from them.

MIchael Wright just brought up Dirk Koetter, Jacksonville OC. His contract is up and with the new owner situation. Tice and Koetter are close from their time together in Jacksonville.

Dirk Koetter is in his fifth season as the Jaguars offensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Jaguars Koetter served as head coach at Boise State and Arizona State.

And recorded his highest passer rating as well as topped off with the fact…ah hell I’ll just post the info right here from the same link Cloudy provided:

In his first season with the Jaguars, Koetter directed a record-breaking season by the offense as the unit set franchise records for points (411, 25.7 avg.), touchdowns (50), touchdown passes (28) and yards per play (5.6). The Jaguars ranked seventh in the NFL in offense (357.4), tied for the second-highest ranking in franchise history, totaled 400-plus yards in a team-record seven games and scored 24 or more points in 10 consecutive games for the first time in team history. Quarterback David Garrard in his first season as the starter ranked third in the NFL with a 102.2 passer rating and threw an NFL-low three interceptions. Garrard threw for a career-high 3,620 yards in 2008 including the first two 300-yard games of his career and set the single-season franchise record with 23 touchdown passes in 2010 despite missing two games.

How many players can a team tag? Just wondering with Brees, Nicks and Colston as FA for the Saints. I can’t see them not tagging Brees.

tice is already familiar with our personnel and our running game will only become better with him at the helm. I would like to see who we can get as a qb coach to continue to help out cutler.

The biggest positive of this signing is not learning a COMPLETELY new offense and so the bears can just continue so install more plays while borrowing some from the martz playbook. Really wana see tice suceed and we already have the biggest OL and biggest TE’s in the league.

passing game coach update
Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Dowell Loggains is emerging as a candidate for a similar position with the Chicago Bears, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Loggains is being touted by Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, and Bears coach Lovie Smith has been making calls inquiring about the 31-year-old coach, according to the source.

While Tennessee might not let Loggains leave for a lateral move while he’s under contract, Loggains would be interested in the move because he has a strong, personal relationship with Cutler…..

Given how well he has coached his receivers to block downfield recently. But, I’m still rather upset that his receivers still run bad routes, drop easy passes, can’t get separation, and overall are a soft group. Earl Bennett is his 1 good player. Hell, he even stated Devin Hester was his best WR in his entire corps!

by awfullyquiet on Jan 6, 2012 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

Well . . .

The receivers have been able to get separation on occasion but especially 2010 they haven’t always been on the same page with the QB, and some have really inconsistent hands (i.e. Knox). We have a bunch of potentials but nobody really that good. Earl Bennett is a number 2 at best but he’s basically our number one because he’s the only guy we have who can achieve separation AND catch the ball consistently.

I think Sanz has potential to be like a poor man’s Wes Welker and do a lot of plays and while he’s shown glimpses of that his hands were too inconsistent last year and he didn’t have much of shot unless a WR was injured (or the end of the year when Hurd was cut off the team for obvious reasons).

Hester should just return balls at this point or be brought in for trickery/deception. The injuries Hester has had to deal with this season shows the liability of having him play a lot of offense.

Johnny Knox . . . man he can get separation but he has a tendency to make tiny mistakes or have the ball get out of his grasp. Plus we don’t know if he’ll ever be the same after that gut-wrenching hit.

This is f**king stupid...

If Tice is the OC, then call him the OC. What is this crap about a passing coach?? This is going to be another stupid Lovie coaching decision. Not because Tice can’t do the job, but because Lovie has again created a situation where Tice does not have the authority to just do the job. The next GM will be cutting Lovie loose next year at this time! Tice will reclaim the run game, but I do not see this working very well. What has Lovie done to show that he is some sort of exception to the standards of the NFL. He has a track record of f**king up the coaching staff and retaining the proven losers like Hoke and Drake.

by ed_brown on Jan 6, 2012 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

I have no problem...

with having staff with specific expertise in differing portions of the game. What bothers me is the fact that Lovie has to go out of his way to obviate the fact the Tice isn’t really going to be the OC. I know that most teams have a handful of guys who collaborate to make up the offensive coordination, but why go to the unnecessary step of saying that Tice isn’t really good at the passing game, so the Bears will bring in some guy who knows what he’s doing. If they want a passing guru to come in and help out, then call him an assistant or QB coach or any other word you choose. It just underscores the fact that while Lovie may be a good DC in his own realm, he’s not a good leader as HC. Just like calling Marinelli an assistant head coach. There is not a sane person who thinks that Lovie does not hold the reins of the defense, let alone get assistance in head coaching. Successful teams don’t waste time parsing out the obvious, failed teams are constantly splitting semantic hairs. I understand (and to a certain degree support) the reasons for choosing Tice, but don’t cut him down before he’s even started the job.

by Just Dave on Jan 6, 2012 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

The only examples of this...

that I have seen are when a HC is also an OC/playcaller. Then there are specific rushing and passing coordinators. I believe Sean Payton has this arrangement in NO and during the Parcells as HC for the Giants era, Payton was the passing coordinator. Jason Garrett in Dallas has one I believe as well. It is a way to allow a HC to be an OC by splitting off the play design and personnel coordination to staff who then are dedicated to being coaches and not play callers. Then the HC can direct the offense without having the added burden of the offensive minutia in addition to his other numerous duties. What Lovie has done does not have much precedence. He’s further subdividing the OC position, which reports to him anyway, into co-offensive coordinators. That is not common or the same arrangement. It’s not about some power struggle with Lovie and Tice because Lovie IS the boss and it is his authority to do so. It’s about the fact that Lovie, while being a good leader of players, does not have a track record of successful managerial decisions with his coaches. Thus, his trail blazing of managerial structure seems a bit misguided and likely not to be successful. I guess we’ll see.

There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!

Well Mike Tice will most likely be using the same terminology used by Martz over the past 2 years

Not only that, but Mike Tice seems to understand what needs to happen with this offense so it can become an elite offense. In an interview with Tice on chicagobears.com, Tice stated that he must get TEs more involved in the passing game, and that he feels the Bears need to bring in a new WR that can win far more 1-on-1 battles than they lose.

So, with Mike Tice we will be getting an OC who knows the system, players, and weaknesses that must be addressed. This was perhaps the best hire that Lovie Smith could have made.

Congratulations to the Bears and to Mike Tice

As a Vikings fan who was encouraging the Bears to bring Mike Tice in a couple of years ago, and to consider making him offensive coordinator even then, I would like to congratulate both the Chicago Bears and Mike Tice.

While I was ready to see Mike Tice leave at the end of his tenure with the Vikings, I never doubted the innate talent for coaching that Mike Tice has. To me it was clear that when the Vikings promoted Tice from OL coach to head coach in the early 2000s, it was just too early and too much of a jump for Tice. We saw that in Minnesota as mistakes like “the Randy ratio” and other things occurring then with the Vikings.

Tice has long deserved an opportunity to serve as a coordinator. He has obviously done great work as an OL coach with the Vikings, Jaguars, and Bears. Now he has gotten to know all of the Bears offensive personnel.

I predict Tice will succeed in his time as an offensive coordinator.

This could also be a building block for Tice to become a head coach again in the NFL.

Best of luck to the Bears and Mike Tice, except when you play the Vikings.

Pessimists can be pleasantly surprised. Optimists can ultimately only be let down…

This is starting to look really bad.

We’re taking the guy whose claim to fame is coaching offensive linemen, but, in his second year coaching the same players, had a bottom five offensive line, and asking him to do something he has never done before? Maybe Tice’s lines were held back by Martz, or a complete absence of talent, but I just don’t get the sense that he is a great, or possibly even good coach. I probably just don’t know enough to understand what is actually happening.

The Bears passing game didn’t really make it out of the 1980s until recently, and even now, it isn’t exactly up to speed with the rest of the league. If nothing, Martz did a great job of getting 20+ yard plays, but for long stretches the Bears offense still looks lost. I expect Tice will take focus away from the passing game (it doesn’t matter who the passing coach is, Tice is in charge and calling plays), and the offense will look like a Frankenstein version of Ron Turner and Mike Martz (Mike Martz running plays and Ron Turner passing plays).

I don’t think Martz did a great job in his tenure, but he always had the ability to outcoach the opposing teams. I don’t think Tice’s offense will be dynamic or try to create and exploit mismatches like a modern offense needs to.

The number crunchers have done the work, and the expected outcome of passing plays (taking into account sacks and interceptions and the clock stopping) is better than running plays. Why are we moving away from the ideal strategy on offense?

We had an opportunity to upgrade here, and we didn’t (I think). I think we will miss Martz next year (3rd and 13? might as well just punt now).

We still have an opportunity upgrade at GM. For some reason I don’t feel confident about that any more. Poor Urlacher.

Let's step away from the ledge for a sec

There are still a bunch of quality candidates for the GM job left. And from the sound of things, Mike Tice is aiming to build an offense that was similar if not the same as what Atlanta currently runs, as well as how Jay Cutler played ball in Denver. He will be using what worked with the Martzfense, with the same terminology, and will be focused on being far more balanced, for the sake of protecting the franchise QB.

Mike Tice seems to have properly identified the problems on offense, and will be persistant on finding solutions to said problems.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Re: GM

There were a lot of good candidates for DC in 2010, and they went with Marinelli.
There were a lot of good candidates for OC in 2012, and they went with Tice.

Forgive me if I’m not looking forward to their eventual decision.

Re: Offense

I hope the Bears are aiming higher than Atlanta or Denver.

I haven’t seen anything to indicate that Tice is actually a good position coach or would make a good offensive coordinator.

I believe, like Martz prefers passing the ball to running, Tice prefers running the ball to passing. (It might not matter who the WR coach is! Or if they sign a wide receiver…)

Tice’s lines are just as much to blame, if not more than Martz’s playcalling for the offensive struggles. (If Tice can’t get his lines to pass protect, can he get an entire offense to run plays together? How much blame does Tice deserve for stupid penalties on the offensive line?)

With all of the simple changes that can (and probably will) be made to Martzfense (audibles, simplified route trees, simpler formations, more pocket flexibility), I don’t think it makes a difference what kind of terminology, or who comes in as the passing coach. Cutler is at the point now where he has learned enough systems/languages that learning the next one will be easy (and I’m not sure how many of the Bears receivers actually learned what they were supposed to be doing under Martz).

The Bears can’t do what GB/NE/NO are doing overnight, and really, there are enough ways to run an offense that they don’t need to try, but I don’t think Tice (and whoever the passing coach ends up being) will be running an offense that will take advantage of all the rule changes that have made the passing game more effective.

If the Bears are hoping to keep up with the Packers, Tice looks like a stupid decision (bringing a knife to a gunfight). Maybe making Tice OC is a signal that they will be focusing on defense in the offseason (the future GM will thank Lovie for making that decision).

Tice seems to inspire a fair bit of confidence in you, whereas I see him as a failure of Drake-like proportions. I’d feel a lot better if I could see him through your eyes.

I really hope I’m wrong about Tice (I’d rather win than be right, because being right doesn’t make losing feel any better), but I don’t think he makes this team better, or will help them move into the 21st century.

He’s on record as having wanted his linemen to run block (aggressively going forward) than have to sit back and pass block, which seems to be trickier for a young line lacking in cohesion (and talent). We were pretty decent at run blocking for large chunks of the season. With that in mind, it seems sensible to use the run to set up downfield shots – which is what Tice seems to want to do.

I haven’t seen anything to indicate that Tice is actually a good position coach or would make a good offensive coordinator.

His track record with offensive linemen is pretty good, and Sean Jensen had an article in the past day or two dispelling the notion that Tice has never called plays before. He was behind the Vikings’ attack when they were actually a dangerous offense.

If this provides the continuity Cutler wanted, good.

Since Tice probably lacks some playcalling abilities, I expect the playbook to have a buttload of audibles, and let Cutty call his shots from the set. It kinda worked for Good Manning, so why not. Give him enough time in the pocket and a couple of valid receivers, and he will reach the 4500yd again at ease.

I'm not sure where the overly negative opinions of Mike Tice are coming from

Can he be a successful OC with the Bears? We don’t know.

But some of these statements, particularly BusterK above:

I just don’t get the sense that he is a great, or possibly even good coach.
I don’t think Tice’s offense will be dynamic or try to create and exploit mismatches like a modern offense needs to.
I haven’t seen anything to indicate that Tice is actually a good position coach or would make a good offensive coordinator.

Some folks definitely need to step off the ledge. To say that one hasn’t “seen anything to indicate that Tice is actually a good position coach or would make a good offensive coordinator”, then one must have been sleeping through Tice’s tenure as OL and HC at Minnesota, or simply be ignoring it completely.

This is the same coach that played a large role in the high-octane passing offenses of the Vikings 10 years ago, as well as consistently finding ways to get Randy Moss open and find mismatches for him on the football field.

I think most Minny fans would share the same opinion of Tice as medicineball, above:

While I was ready to see Mike Tice leave at the end of his tenure with the Vikings, I never doubted the innate talent for coaching that Mike Tice has. To me it was clear that when the Vikings promoted Tice from OL coach to head coach in the early 2000s, it was just too early and too much of a jump for Tice.

That was exactly my take on him as a Bears fan. And his performance in Minnesota was not bad. After overseeing the TE’s and OL on a very explosive ballclub (Cunningham, Moss, Robert Smith), he took over as HC of a team in transition from Cunningham to Culpepper, and after the sudden retirement of Robert Smith in 2000 (after a 1,500-yard rushing and 350-yard receiving season).

His offenses in Minnesota from 2002-2004 were ranked #2, #1 and #4, respectively, in total yards – despite having no clear #1 RB (Michael Bennett gave way to RB by committee). His rushing offense was #1 in yards, TDs and yards/attempt in 2002. His passing offense was no worse than #4 in yards, TDs and net yards/attempt in both 2003 and 2004.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/TiceMi0.htm#coaching_ranks::none

His offense during 4+ full seasons as HC was 25% in total offense yards, top 37% in points, top 21% in rushing yards/attempt, top 23% in passing yards, and top 30% in passing TDs and net yards/pass. That’s a lot of good stuff to work with there. It was his defenses that were the problem.

His track record on the Bears, in my opinion, can be read either way. The offensive line has been the worst unit on the Bears recently. But I simply don’t know how much he’s had to work with. Kreutz’s performance fell off a cliff. Garza is getting old. Lance Louis and J’marcus Webb were both drafted in the 7th round. Chris Spencer seemed to perform well shortly after being signed as a FA. Gabe Carimi and Chris Williams are the only first-day OL draft picks that Tice had to work with (and the only ones of Angelo’s tenure other than Mark Columbo), and they were both injured for the last half of the season, after looking quite promising before that.

So has Tice’s unit under-performed due to Tice’s leadership? Or is it garbage-in, garbage-out, and he’s actually gotten them to achieve far greater success than their talent level would indicate? I’m leaning much more toward the former. I haven’t touched on his performance at Jacksonville simply because I know absolutely nothing of it, though I’ve read that he did good work there, too.

In the end, from Ted Phillips’ press conference where he spoke highly and steadfastly of Jay Cutler’s role on the team going forward, I have to believe that Cutler is firmly behind this decision as well. And that’s probably the most important thing to me, at this point.

Webb needs to sit on the bench, for starters ...

We need a long-term replacement/backup for Garza – Spencer stinks as a center. But we definitely need a left tackle. I like what Tice got out of basically a bad line – similar to what KC did with scheming alone – went from worst to first inside a year, without roster additions. I think Tice can do that for us.
