"...where we're like NFL referees...with all our brain cells."

Tice excited about assuming new role Newly appointed Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice discussed his new role on ESPN 1000's "Carmen, Jurko and Harry Show".

Lovie goes with Tice that binds Jensen: The Bears still plan to hire an offensive line coach as well as a quarterbacks coach who will be consulted on the passing offense.

Bears might look at Giants exec Marc Ross for GM job Jensen: Ross is wrapping up his fifth season as the Giants’ director of college scouting. Around the NFL, the Giants are respected for their player evaluation, consistently capitalizing on the draft to build their roster.

GM plans, week 2: Bears in no hurry Moon: As the Bears enter week 2 of their search for a new general manager, one thing is clear: they're in no rush. They've yet to formally interview anyone. Could it be their choice is already part of the franchise? Thoughts from a wild-card weekend.

Bears' Smith doing it his way Parr: While there was no general manager in place to offer consultation, the Bears entrusted Lovie Smith with the power to hire their new offensive coordinator.

Time to hold Lions to a higher standard Seifert: After returning to relevance this season, the Lions have earned themselves big-boy treatment moving forward.

Breaking down NFL Wild Card weekend Matt Bowen has three things from each game that you should be talking about.

I am running off of that ledge, moving to NOLA and converting to Who Dat nation. On a positive note, I love what Mike Tice is saying. If we can get Colston and draft a guy, I think we will be in good shape. And I dont see how we dont sign 22 now. I went through a number of early mocks Saturday, including Walter Football, Bleacher Report, Todd McShay, etc.

And our #19 pick ranged from Reif (OT Iowa or Ohio States LT), Vontez Burfict (LB AzSt), Jeffries (WR, SCU) & Floyd (WR, ND), a few defensive ends, and one or two corners.

It will definitely be interesting.

ZOMG

I FORGET. IF WE’RE HIGH ENOUGH FOR BURFICT… IT MEANS WE’RE PROBABLY HIGH ENOUGH FOR LUKE KUECHLY.

CRYING. CREYING. ALL THE THINGS.

whew

Anyway. I think we’ll have better luck drafting an OT in the first (Adams from Ohio State), and plucking a FA WR, and drafting one of those nice, deep receivers… Like Mohamad Sanu or Nick Toon in the second or Dwight Jones (if his knee checks out) or McNutt even later…

I mean, other options would be signing Levi Brown from Arizona to play LT (as he was drastically improving over there on the left side) but that’s not a sure thing… Maybe another year of Tice will win the hearts and minds of the current group of lackeys at LT.

The CB depth isn’t terrible either picking up someone like Ryan Steed (Furman) in the mid rounds who’s a smart, intelligent tackler who has good coverage skills and can effectively leverage WRs but lacks a lot of the elite CB speed or Donnie Fletcher (Boston College, Go Eagles) who has great agility and presence in zone coverage, good vision for the ball, and a solid tackler… Makes me giddy thinking about all the good BC prospects.

I'd argue quite the contrary .....

….. Larry Fitzgerlad’s final college seasons stats
92 REC , 1672 YARDS , 18.2 YPC & 22 TD’s
Mike Floyds final college seasons stats
100 REC , 1147 YARDS , 11.5 YPC & 10 TD’s

So while the TD’s are a bit lopsided you gotta figure Larry had very solid QB play to fuel his stats while Floyd had shaky QB play and still put up similar numbers .

Both.

More often than not, rookie WR’s arent game changers their first season. This year seems to be deep in both, the FA and the draft class. We still need at least 2 anyway. Unless we bring back REW and Sam Hurd. I think we need to get Colston or Vjax. I dont think Bowe is gonna be let out of KC. If we can get either one of those guys, I could see us possibly drafting that kid Wright from Baylor. I think Floyd and Jefferies will be gone at 19. Or we could wait until the 2nd round for another player and draft OL or Defense with our first pick.

Resting on their laurels

Doing what they always do; not a whole lot. Accepting mediocrity. Why can’t they schedule an interview with one of the many Packer executives? How about the guy from the Giants? They are plenty of candidates to call and interview.

They would get a better understanding of who would be a good fit for their GM spot, but instead they just wait….wait for something or someone to magically appear.

i would fathom a guess, and say it was because of the different running styles up to game 10 and after that it was desperation from the poor qb from game 11 to 14 then for the last two games Bell was an inspiration alongside Allen

This is why Jerry should have been fired years ago.

you don’t need an offensive line, just a different running back or a shorter drop by the QB etc.

Roy E Williams

i do not mind him returning, with a full pre season camp under his belt and another WR picked up(either rookie or FA) we would still have double threat. i am also hoping we keep Barber alongside Forte (pay the man) also Bell. We would have a double threat if we were to line up any two in a T formation.

If he wouldn’t have dropped every other ball, he may have hit that mark.

Yeah, a percentage of it.

But there are no excuses down the stretch, or even past game 3 for that matter. His season, for me, was summed up by the play against the Chiefs on the goal line. All year his drops were just really annoying; that play was a game-ender.

While he caught a pretty good number of the passes thrown his way

the passes he didn’t catch were outright drops (they weren’t bad passes, or defended passes). He wasn’t a disaster, but he looked old and not crafty.

we first of all if you are going to catch 70 passes they have to throw it at you more than 63 times.

out of 63 passes thrown his way he dropped 7 and caught 37 so he could have caught 44 max with no drops.

Roy did lead the team with 7 drops

Tied for 10th in the league for most drops, and he wasn’t exactly targeted that much.

Roy had 7 drops on 37 receptions.
Benjamin Watson (Cle) also had 7 drops on 37 receptions.
Brandon Gibson (StL) had 7 drops on 36 receptions.
Dallas Clark (Ind) had 9 drops on 34 receptions.
Jermichael Finley (GB) had 11 drops on 55 receptions.

Top 5 in the league in drop percentage isn’t very good.

(Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Marshall weren’t very good at catching the ball either.)

Sanzenbacher had 6 drops on 27 receptions.

Johnny Knox had 3 drops on 37 receptions.
Sam Hurd had 0 drops on 8 receptions.
Earl Bennett had 0 drops on 24 receptions.

It really dosen't come as a surprise

with Ted being on another of his “most excellent adventures” that he hasn’t jumped in, or seems not to have, with both feet to test the GM waters!! He will “dick around” with this as he usually does things and then wonder what the hell happened when no quality candidates either aren’t available or aren’t interested in the way he and the Bears do business, it’s too bad, with change nothing has changed, it’s got the McCaskey/Phillips brand all over it. I do like the Tice thing though, the man at least seems to have a clue, an idea or two that actually resonate, whether or not he can get anything implemented will remain to be seen with two of the three stooges still in place, not getting to excited yet, Phillips reputation/track record precedes him.

I would think that George would find the hiring of Ruskell as a major failure by Phillips.

With many a “better” qualified candidate out there, if the Bears are reduced to hiring Ruskell (as would appear is their fallback plan), it would look just like the Martz hire – no one else was willing to take the job.

Phillips himself is a major obstacle to the GM hire. I think most GM’s would be content with the coaching staff in place – they ain’t awful, but having to report to Beavis would be a deal killer.

Let’s hope I’m wrong.

The GM situation in St. Louis has the potential to get far worse than it is in Chicago

I’m wondering if they won’t go ahead and name Jeff Fisher the HC and GM of the St. Louis Rams. And, whomever takes over in Indy has to make the decision to either keep Peyton Manning while asking the #1 overall pick Andrew Luck to sit on the bench for the year, or trade Peyton Manning and rebuild the team from scratch.

I’m thinking the Bears’ management knows of this already, and thus are being patient to interview candidates. Its not always a good thing to be first in line, after all.

Out of the box thinking for the Colts:

trade the #1 to Minnesota for Ponder, this years 1 and next years 1. I read somewhere that Luck is worth 3 #1s. You get 2 #1’s plus Ponder to groom as Peyton’s understudy. I just see Luck sitting behind Manning as a combustible situation.

2nd Round: Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

3rd Round: Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

I know but not if he's the ONLY receiver chosen in the draft. As a late rounder he can be a ST's player and a #3 or #4 receiver.

I agree with you that people are going to want instant results but I think if he’s there in the late rounds, then I don’t see what the big deal is with having depth. He’ll continue to recover and it’s not as if he was an average player when he was healthy. He was a pretty good receiver so a guy like him wouldn’t be so far behind in terms of development I would think.

by frenchbears113 on Jan 9, 2012 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

With Coples I know he is a top 10-15 pick

Normally every year there is one top 10-15 player that somehow falls out of the top 15. I’m thinking someone will goof up and select Whitney Merciless ahead of Coples as a 3-4 type OLB. And Broyles was easily a 1-3 round pick before tearing his ACL, he is one extremely talented player worth drafting in the later rounds.

Yes I saw

broyles list as a 2nd and 3rd rounder by various people….Just think the Chicago media (and some fans) would rip the pick apart even if he was drafted in the later rounds because he is coming off ACL surgery because the Bears need help at the WR position now not in the future…..

Coples is going to be a bust.

I’ve seen every game he’s played in, and he can be very good in one on one situations, but whenever he goes against quality O-lines or gets double teamed, he disappears. Completely. It’s unacceptable at the college level. Imagine how he’ll do against NFL lines.

He also has technique problems, which don’t translate well for NFL D-linemen.

by Nih1lus on Jan 9, 2012 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

I think that has a chance to be true if he is stuck on a D-Line with no other form of talent

But, if you play him in Chicago where Julius Peppers and Henry Melton are on the same line, Quinton Coples wouldn’t be double teamed and he could thrive.

the truly exceptional D-linemen

who are worthy of a top-10 or top-15 pick should be able to generate their own pressure. Look at Mario Williams. He has played with some crap lines and he has always been phenomenal.

He’s not worth the pick where people are placing him at. Agreed, he’ll thrive if he’s on a good lineman, but then again, any d-lineman has a good shot at that playing on a good line that has players demanding double teams.

Throw a big contract at Cliff Avril of the Lions.

He’s a free agent, but even though Detroit’s defense got shredded, I don’t see how they can have 2 #1 picks in Suh & Fairley plus FA signing Vanden Bosch on the d-line and still have enough money for Avril.

The Lions need help in their LB core and secondary bad. This might leave Avril to pursue other options. Cliff Avril is 25, turns 26 in April. He had 11 sacks, an INT and 6 forced fumbles this season. He had 8.5 sacks in 13 games last year. He’s the goods.

We have good linebackers and good DTs vs. the run.

I’ll take a really good pass rusher opposite Pep. That’s what the Bears need. I think Avril will move (unless he’s franchised) because I think its unlikely Detroit can put so much money on their DL while the rest of the back 7 is so bad.

Who's Pep 2.0? If you mean Coples, he won't be there at 19.

He’s the top DL in the draft according to lots of people.

by Mike Mueller on Jan 9, 2012 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

He's not

Look, I’m biased, because my college team is NC State. But I watched Coples. He is not dominant like Peppers was. And this is against below average college players usually. If he was nearly as good as Peppers (and if you believe any of the hype machine on the UNC-Cheat defense) he would have put up monster numbers. He did not even come close. He got shut down alot, and he was not always being double teamed like Peppers was.

by Th3T1ck on Jan 9, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

He's still a damn good player, though

And if all what you said is true, then he won’t be a top 5 or really even 15 pick. A good DE he is, though, and the Bears really need another DE to develop and take advantage of the 1-on-1 matchups.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 9, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

So, have you watched him? Or are you judging him solely off draftniks and measurables? Because I have watched him, and his performance so far does not indicate that he is a good DE. The line he played on and UNC’s LB group the last two years had several other players who were physically gifted (they have great physical measurables). But they did not play like NFL players. Their defensive scheme was a pressure focused scheme, so they should have put up numbers.

I've watched him a good amount of times

I was impressed by his play. And its not so much the pass rush I’m looking for, but a combination of pass rush as well as being stout against the run. Shoot I remember I had the same complaints with Pierre-Paul, and when he got paired with Osi, his production speaks for itself. Pair Coples with Peppers, and that should be a fun duo to watch.

Ok, just disagree

I think you’re wrong, and I really hope he does not end up on the Bears. Any decent end should be good with Peppers. I do not think Coples is an above average NFL DE. He may be average, but his play that I have seen does not look that way.
Regarding Paul, I did not see him as much, but I did see enough of him. I did not think he was overhyped. He was raw, but he was dominant at USF. He beat double teams and he dominated good players. He was raw though, and those guys can be boom or bust in the NFL.

UNC fan here

I hate to say this, but Coples is going to be a bust. You’re right, he’s not outright dominant like Peppers was. Also, he disappears when he goes up against quality O-lines or gets double teamed. And he has technique problems. That doesn’t translate well to the NFL. Imagine how much he’ll disappear when he plays against NFL quality O-lines.

Also, the UNC-Cheat defense name calling is unwarranted. It was only a few players that got everyone in trouble, and Butch didn’t even know about it. I know the family, and Butch was innocent, but a necessary scapegoat to start over fresh. There’s a few players at every school that demand/ get preferential treatment, and our guys were dumb enough to advertise it. A tweet from marvin austin about a party he was at in Miami started the whole thing.

Don’t make it a UNC only thing. That would be a huge mistake.

9 major violations

UNC had 9 major violations, at once. That is in SMU territory. UNC hired Davis and Blake, and they ran the program like they have done historically (Blake was an OU bagman, and Miami was in it deep with Davis). There is plenty of evidence that Quinn, Austin, and Little all got paid, and they only really covered the easy stuff (Just the documented trips and gifts. Nothing about the nine different cars Greg Little had parking tickets with, which come from a purported money laundering operation in Durham). There is plenty of evidence that they facilitated academic fraud (with Wiley and complicit instructors). And there is the whole matter of agents (Blake had his own current Pro-Tec business card and was on their website, and Hawkins was in their facilities all the time). Don’t be naive. They clearly cheated. Much better for you to just move on and hope they clean up.

by Th3T1ck on Jan 9, 2012 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

He should fall for football reasons

The things that happened at UNC are not problems for the pros. In the pros, players get paid to play. The rules say they aren’t supposed to in college. The problems with Coples are that he hasn’t shown he can do it on the field. There will be better players for the Bears to take.

Significantly better player than Little. Better hands, and built like a horse. Dumber than a pile of bricks. Jones has not pulled the sort of bitch moves that Little did (like taunting and spitting on a CB lying on the ground after blowing out his knee, or throwing punches in a game). There’s some off the field stuff (he’s apparently in with some club owners based on the last little scandal), which for the pros is more concerning than the off field stuff with the other guys. I expect the NFL security guys to check all that. Plenty of clubs are fine, some aren’t.

I'd take him

Butch Davis had a pretty good eye for WR’s: Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, Hakeem Nicks, Greg Little, Brandon Tate and Dwight Jones. Not sure what kind of speed Jones has but he’s got the size we’ve all been clamoring for the past several years.

i didn't deny there were academic and athletic violations

i’m just saying that you phrased it as it was a UNC-specific thing, when realistically, all football schools have players that do this sort of thing.

In case you weren’t aware of Butch’s situation when he went into Miami, Butch inherited a program that had major violations, was on probation, and was down scholarships. He cleaned the program up and built it into a winning program again. The exact opposite of what you said.

The most that one player in the scandal got in benefits was maybe $2k, but i think it was more in the realm of $1.5k. And that was mostly in the forms of meals, plane tickets, etc. Not actual money. Additionally, the parking ticket thing was across 9 different players getting tons of tickets and ignoring them, not greg little. I’ve seen him riding around campus when i was doing my undergrad, he drove a pretty standard camry. Hell, Marvin Austin rode a motor scooter around campus!

The agent thing is warranted, but Blake was apparently more of a mentor for the NFL- caliber players on which agents to pick or what do do. The academic “tutoring” was warranted, but again, happens at all colleges. A lot of football players are there to play football, not the learn. Sorry, but that’s how a lot of college football works. Most teachers at colleges have an “understanding” that the football players (especially the star players) need to pass their classes.

My point is you’re making it out like they did absolutely deplorable things, when in fact, it’s pretty standard things for players in a college football program. Difference is they got caught.

You’re naive if you think these types of things don’t happen at every football school.

by Nih1lus on Jan 9, 2012 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

So you agree?

You agree that UNC broke basically all the rules (academic integrity and amateurism), and Davis was in charge? Yeah, I said UNC specifically cheated. They did, and far beyond what you are saying. You are trying to claim that “everyone does it” which is not a valid defense (I certainly hope you weren’t pre-law).

Regarding Little, it’s not the tickets that matter. It’s that he had 9 different cars to get them. Yeah, the camry was one of them. The thing with Little is that some of the cars he drove were tied back to organized crime, and that’s a big problem.

Seriously, you’re better to disassociate from those guys. They did nothing for UNC but bring shame. Heck, the joke amongst the Wolfpack fans was comparing UNC to Alabama. “If you’re comparing UNC to Alabama, then Davis shouldn’t be fired for cheating. He should be fired for losing.”

by Th3T1ck on Jan 9, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

that players on the UNC football team broke rules with assistance from university employees, but I don’t agree that Butch knew what was going on. He helped clean up the Miami program when he got there, and he hired Blake in part to be an adviser to those NFL caliber players. He didn’t know about what else Blake was doing.

I’ve never heard anything about Greg Little’s 9 cars, everything i’ve heard is that a group of players were getting obscene amounts of parking tickets, and not paying them. Do you have a link/ source to the greg little stuff?

Don’t think it was far beyond what i am saying. All reports I’ve seen, it’s not that bad. It’s just they got caught. If greg little was actually involved with that, that’s on his own accord. Don’t generalize the team on one player.

You’re right, saying “everyone does it” isn’t a valid defense, and I wasn’t using that way. But it’s stupid to not realize that “everyone does it” is actually true.

Is it ok that these players did this? absolutely not. Is it ok to berate this team for getting caught when in fact everyone does stuff on this level? Also not. Some of the stuff that is above and beyond, like the fact Reggie Bush got multiple cars while at USC, is definitely not acceptable.

My point is, if you want to be competitive in collegiate football now, you have to do these things. It’s not right, but its the way it is.

It’s definitely not ok that this happens everywhere now. The idea of a “student athlete” in collegiate athletics is largely a joke now.

by Nih1lus on Jan 9, 2012 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

You are living in a fantasy land if you think it’s one guy. There were 13 total guys who were involved in the violations. That’s not one guy, that’s a team. As for:

"everyone does it" is actually true.

Bull. Not everyone does it. Compare UNC to their academic peers (the ones you should compare your degree to): NCSU, UVA, UMD, GT, BC, WF. What you’re talking about isn’t happening there. In fact, I doubt it’s happening anywhere on the scale UNC perpetrated. You’re completely off base on the Blake issue. He was employed by an agent concurrently with being a coach at UNC. That is against the rules, and he knew it. That has not happened ever before in an NCAA investigation.

As for the cars, my mistake. 5 cars, 9 license plates.

Seriously, just search UNC or UNX on statefansnation or packpride. You’ll find the released evidence and the analysis. It’s pretty damning. You can review it yourself.

i don't think you're following what i'm saying.

I said if the organized crime thing was on greg little, that’s on him and only him as it isn’t football nor academically related. The violations were not on one guy. that’s obvious. You’re not following what I’m saying.

And yes, everyone does it. Sorry if you want to live in fantasy land and believe your beloved wolfpack are squeaky clean, but the reality is every football team does this. it may not have been quite to the degree that UNC got caught, but these players get special privledges for their studies (i.e. get passing grades because of understandings with the teachers that they need to be academically eligible to play), and they get benefits in the form of gifts. I believed this before the UNC allegations, if you want to pull the “you only think this way now because you got caught” card.

yes, blake was concurrently employed by an agency. Butch didn’t know that Blake was employed by an agency though.

Really? The scale of UNC? Have you not been paying attention to the USC, OSU, and Miami allegations of the past year? Those are immensely worse. I know for a fact that football players at GT and UMD get free passes on classes all the time and they get “gifts”. I have two friends, who ironically, are both student football assistants to these respective teams.

You’re clearly delusional. You don’t get to say “oh that’s just that one (13) guy”. It’s all on UNC. You also don’t get to say “everybody does it”. Neither of those flies. FA is back to before the draft. If you can get Avril for less than a blockbuster price (unlikely, but possible) then I think he’s a great addition to the Bears. Then obviously DE is not a need in the 1st few rounds. If Avril signs elsewhere for 60 million which could happen, then the Bears will pass and DE will probably be high on their list of needs in the 1st 2 rounds.

by Mike Mueller on Jan 9, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

My point is that first off we can sign a vet in FA to add depth in the OT position

And secondly, there are not too many good LTs available in the next draft that will have any chance of falling close to where the Bears pick. Plus, the player I chose from BYU would be an excellent mid round player that could push if not replace J’Marcus Webb.

I liked this quote especially:

"I really admire Jay. I think he’s a tough SOB. I think he understands what he wants to be and the things that he’s been successful at in this league. I have had really good conversations over the past week with Jay, and I’ve also had some great conversations with him over the last couple years. I admire and I like Jay a lot. I know the guys like playing for Jay. We’ve just got to be able to put Jay in a position to utilize the great talents that he does have. He can run, he can throw it, and we want to make sure he’s comfortable so he can set his feet and throw it. He throws the ball very well on the move. I’ve identified all those areas with him. I believe Jay and I are on the same page moving forward and we’re going to make sure that we do the things to be able to let his talents shine and let him be that franchise quarterback that I think he is."

Sounds like Cutty will not have to tell Tice to f*** himself ala Martz. What a concept, playing to jay’s strengths…. gee, how long did it take Martz to figure that out?

not every play

and you only do consistent 5 or 7 drops if your line can block the whole time when the D knows what your trying to do. if your OL cant block those kind of drop backs one after another guess what? teams dont run those plays all the time.

5 and 7 step drops are very common in the NFL

but even Mad Martz used 3step drops and an occasional shotgun not the same play over and over. the average NFL team dial up a passing play 65% of the time. We only dialed up passing plays 53% of the time and still gave up more sacks QB hits and hurries than all but a couple of teams. I would think that if your Oline can’t get the job done you get a better Oline not resign yourself to trying to come up with a way to work without pass protection.

The playcalling was either adapted because it put too much pressure on the line, or to cover up the failings of the line

I don’t get the impression that people are really considering both of those possibilities.

Martz is the bad guy, so doesn’t get credit for anything good that happened, and he takes the blame for everything bad that happened.

Tice is not a bad coach, but he shouldn’t get a free pass for all of the problems on the line the past two years. There were enough problems with the line to raise questions about his viability as an offensive coordinator in today’s NFL.

by BusterK on Jan 9, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

pass protection remains a serious problem for the Bears

but the run blocking improved considerably in 2011 over 2010.

The improvement was really Jay making better quicker decisions and doing a better job of protectiong the ball.

Having Carimi and williams back next years will improve pass protection and I am hoping that they find someone better than Webb at LT

I think we can expect a very conservative offense that will bite you if you put too many in the box. Low scoring but chewing up the clock keeping the D a lot fresher than it has the past 2 or 3 years.

Tice was the only real choice for OC considering the circumstances, This is a good opportunity for Tice to position himself as Lovies successor.

Just out of curiosity

I wonder what the highest price any team has made to trade for an O-Lineman? And I was thinking this years’ 3rd and a conditional pick where if he gets named to the Pro Bowl his first year with the Bears, then its a 1st round pick. If not, then its a 2nd round pick.

If that happens to be the trade, then ship our other 3rd round pick to Miami (like before) for Brandon Marshall. With our two 3rd round picks, we would acquire a great LT and WR. Of course, that is unrealistic, and its more fun to watch people having to make a tough choice between 2 great players.

They would certainly like Matt Forte, I'm sure

However, O-lineman in general do not command nearly as much as skill positioned players on offense would. I’m thinking a draft pick would work with Clady.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

I wouldn't trade him If I were them.

but then I have grown accustom to JA draft picks.

Player for player trades

are also incredibly rare. NFL GMs seem to like the shiny prospect of a draft pick, which, when you think about it, makes about as much sense as trading a known quantity for a mystery box.

Took the 'G' out your waffle, all you got left is your Ego.

The unfortunate reality is.

I don’t get it either… Maybe it’s the quality of draft prospects is higher + financial considerations = ???

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

I don't see either team

motivated to trade those guys. Marshall had a nice season, pretty much stayed out of trouble, and had good chemistry with Matt Moore. Clady is a young and good LT—teams pretty much never trade guys like him.

The fact that we have an extra pick doens’t mean other teams will line up to give us great players for it. If the Bears had a young, Pro-Bowl caliber LT, would you be willing to trade him away for a 3rd rounder and a conditional pick? I reaaaally doubt it.

Ryan Clady only has 1 more year on his contract

And the Broncos may not be able to afford him.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 9, 2012 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

It's not like they are a cheap

organization, or a team filled with high-ticket players. They can afford him. Teams don’t trade franchise-caliber LTs, and they certainly don’t do it for a third round pick.

by tomas21 on Jan 9, 2012 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Except in the strange case of the Denver Broncos

Ryan Clady is no longer a “LT” since Tebow is left-handed. And it’s not like the Broncos are cheap, but they need to retain other players while looking for a RT and a dominant WR. Also need to beef up their front 7.

So like I’ve said, they may not be able to afford Clady. And wasn’t he injured this year? Normally O-Lineman don’t command a lot in the trade market, anyway.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jan 9, 2012 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

Dude

they are not getting a franchise left tackle for a 3rd round pick. IF Tebow is kept, and they wanted to protect his blind side they could move him to right tackle. If they decided to just let him walk (which they wouldn’t) they’d get a 3rd round compensatory pick, so a 3rd rounder wouldn’t even open the discussions.

But that’s all moot, because they wouldn’t trade him. Because he is the kind of guy you build around, not trade for 3rd round picks because he’s expensive or because your QB is left-handed.

Why in Gods green earth

Would Denver trade their good, young starting LT?

Not to pile on to the Lions miserable weekend but...

The worst-run cities in the US:

1. Miami, Fla.

2. Detroit, Mich. (Ouch)

•Violent crime per 1,000 people: 18.87 (the highest)
•Poverty rate: 37.6% (the highest)
•Adult population graduated from high school: 77.4% (18th-lowest)
•Credit rating: Ba3 (on review)
•Population: 711,910
Despite being more notorious for its troubles than any other major U.S. city, Detroit managed to avoid the title of worst-run city in the country. The city has been in a tough spot for decades, but continued problems with corruption and poor management have not helped matters. Detroit already sports the worst credit rating awarded by Moody’s and is the only one of the 100 largest cities in the U.S. to have a rating below investment grade. Worse still, the agency is reviewing the Ba3 rating, which already had a negative outlook, after the state of Michigan announced that it’s evaluating whether the city’s troubles constitute an economic crisis. Of the 100 largest cities, Detroit has the highest home vacancy rate, the highest unemployment rate, the highest poverty rate, the worst violent crime rate and the lowest median household income.

Hopefully they teach you grammar...

in the worst run city…you kids and your texting has made you such bad spellers! Cue crabby old man responses in 3, 2, 1…

crabby you will be, when as old as I you are, young padawan.

It must have been great to live back in Shakespeare’s time, when you could spell anything anyway you wanted to.

“The Tice that Binds”
What would possibly inTice them to do such lame stuff.

Above all; keep 'em guessing, never let them lose their sense of confusion.

I lost respect for the Sun-Times back in 1988...

….when they ran a headline, about the Democratic National Convention, I believe:

“Jesse Picks Dem Nominee”

At least the Tice stuff isn’t borderline racist.
