You Know Who Didn't Get Benched? J'Marcus Webb

Now, I am not for one minute suggesting that Webb has had a great season. He and the rest of the line have not managed to put their struggles behind them, and this was evident in last Monday's loss to the 49ers. But for whatever reason, Lovie Smith and the coaches clearly have some faith in Webb. Or is it purely a case of him being the best option?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Chicago Bears left tackle, J'Marcus Webb used to be the poster boy for all that was, and still is wrong with the offensive line?

But in the last few days we have seen left guard Chilo Rachal take his ball and go home, and second-year right tackle, Gabe Carimi relegated to the bench. So where are all those Webb haters now?

Now, I am not for one minute suggesting that Webb has had a great season. He and the rest of the line have not managed to put their struggles behind them, and this was evident in last Monday's loss to the 49ers. But for whatever reason, Lovie Smith and the rest of the coaches clearly have some faith in Webb. Or is it purely a case of him being the best option?

Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice had this to say about Carimi being benched:

"Gabe had some struggles this last game last week. He works hard and is a very good professional for a young player. But at the end of the day, we all have to have better results starting with me because I'm the coordinator. I have to have better results. The players have to have better results. It's a business. That's the way it is. That's what it's about. We have to make decisions and go, whether that's what we're calling, who we're calling it to, who's blocking, who's catching. We've got to go."

Is it just a matter of time before we see Webb getting replaced? Or does he make it through the rest of the season? We have talked a lot about him on this site, and the general consensus seems to be that he's not very good. A lot of people seem more concerned about his antics off the field than his play on it. Almost as if it would be okay to sell t-shirts if he was putting in good performances. Well, who's laughing now? Webb is seeing his team mates dropping like flies, while he holds onto his roster spot and presumably still does a roaring trade in the fashion business.

You see, while the other members of the offensive line were wondering when they were going to be called to coach's office and told that their services were no longer required, J'Marcus Webb was tweeting this:

What you are witnessing is a man so sure of his abilities that he still has the time to reach out and connect with the fans, whilst still playing top flight NFL football.

You know who should be worried about their job security? Mike Tice. If we're honest, things haven't really got that much better since Tice took over the job from Mike Martz. He hasn't found a way to get Devin Hester more involved, and the protection afforded to Cutler has been poor at best, and woeful at worst. With the addition of Michael Bush, the Bears should be a better running team than they have been in recent years, but that just plainly hasn't been the case. Name one thing (apart from Brandon Marshall) that excites you about Chicago's offense. Not easy, right?

But back to the case in point - J'Marcus Webb. The truth remains that against most people's wishes, he still remains (for the time being, at least) the Bears starting left tackle. He must be doing something right. It's just that sometimes it's hard to tell what it is.
