As much as everyone is wanting VJax or Bowe, I dont see it happening unless we can get them at the right price.
And of course they are not tagged. Im not sure why everyone is not down with getting Meachem and then drafting a possible starting or short term developmental receiver like Sanu, Toon, or Mcnutt.
Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!
Im with you on Meacham
Cutler made something outta nothing with What we had at wr. Give him a a"Good" wr and i have no doubt he’ll make him better. I would go Meacham and pick a wr in the 1st rd especially if Wright,Floyd or Jefferies are there at 19

I'm pretty certain one of those guys will be there at 19.
Until we complete our acquisitions in FA, we won’t have any better idea of what they’ll do in round 1 or 2.

I like Meacham but am cautious
He did well in the New Orleans system of fast paced spread the ball around offense. How much of his success was due to his own ability to get separation and make plays versus the opposing defense not being able to cover Colston, Grahm, Meacham, Sproles and Moore all at the same time?
"And furthermore, I think Carthage must be destroyed."
by TheotherDane on Feb 10, 2012 10:49 AM CST up reply actions
Exactly
He’ll be virtually non-existent on the Bears offense. His career high for catches is 45. Too much risk and not enough reward.

Meachem was there before Sproles and Graham but your point is a valid one.
He has the skill and ability but what I’m wary of has been his inability to stand out amongst the plethora of options in New Orleans.

Meacham isn't the answer
If you want another Hester, then yeah, he’s the answer. One-trick pony.

You are so far off its ridiculous. Meachem is a far better receiver than Hester and can do a lot more at the position.
Not to mention he caught more TD’s as the 3rd and 4th option receiver than any receiver on our team.
Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!
Yeah
On a team that throws the ball on almost every down, and with stars all over the place. As a DC, the last guy I’d worry about facing the Saints offense is Meachem. He’s like Brees’ 6 favorite option. That tells me he can’t get open consistently, nor can he take advantage of one on one situations.
Your stud has a career high of 45 receptions. Hester’s is 57. The thing is, I’m not overstating Hester at all, but Meachem’s perceived value is way far off.

Everyone's now saying Martz was a terrible hire
and in hindsight that is true but let’s be honest, the reason why Lovie hired Martz was because nobody else wanted the job, Bates turned them down at that time because they had just come off a lousy season yet they retained both Lovie and Jerry- that meant to everybody that Lovie was on the hot seat and no up and coming OC (or even DC since Fewell turned down that job too so Lovie had to promote Marinelli to take over because nobody wanted it either.) wanted to work in that kind of environment.
So this brings us back to the present: Lovie is still in the hot seat and so he decides to bring in Bates as the QB coach and elevated Tice as OC simply because once again, nobody wanted the job.
Earth to McCaskeys- if you want to make wholesale changes to make it attractive for anyone then for God’s sake fire everybody, don’t make the HC a lame duck again because no one will want to work with him (at least one who isnt desperate).
I disagree
Personally, I feel like there are a number of guys who would jump at the chance to b an OC regardless of the situation. They.msy not have been the “high profile” guys but to say nobody wanted the job is assuming alot. This year they promoted in house to keep some continuity with what we’re running. We have a good offense in place that just needed tweaks and a change in philosophy ie audibles, true pa passes, bootlegs and rollouts maximizing what our Qb does best. Smart business move. Then they add his QB coach to bring even more familiarity PLUS should Tice leave for a HC gig after our playoff run next year we will be able to promotr in house again with Bates and keep the Juggernaut moving. The Bears have had an extremely productive offseason to date and can b even better once we sign fa and draft gold.

And which candidates are you referring to
That were ready to “jump” at the Chicago OC job when we ended up hiring Martz, 2 years ago? We tried to interview Bates for the job at that time, but he (among others) wasn’t interested.
Martz, at the time was out of football and had lasted only a couple of years each at his previous 2 OC gigs (in Detroit and SF) and at the time was an analyst for the NFL Network, if I remember. Martz wasn’t exactly “beating down” coaching offers when Lovie grabbed him away from his television job. Martz was probably the most experienced candidate that was available at the time, but he wasn’t coaching because he wasn’t getting offers to coach – except from Chicago.
Just because Martz took it doesnt mean nobody else wanted it. He wasnt the only OC out of a job.
Saying Nobody is quite a jump in assumption. One that we dont know is true.

Everyone knows that Martz was a last resort
I think you’re kidding yourself if you think there were a slew of worthwhile candidates “silently pineing” for the job. But you are correct, a job coaching for the Bears “should” be a highly sought-after position. But with Lovie being a lame duck – both when Martz was hired 2 years ago and this year, people are avoiding a job on Smith’s staff. Case in point, Jeremy Bates was out of football when he got the call this year.
Cautiously Optimistic.
I think you’re fairly accurate in your assessment. Although, I don’t know if Martz was a choice of last resort or if Lovie steered it that way. I got the impression during that process that Martz was going to be the choice and the whole search was a facade.
Fewell pretty much didn’t want to be restricted by working for Lovie.
After not letting him interview for an OC position last season, they more or less had to let Tice interview for this position. I actually think he is going to do a damn good job and am glad he got the position. Adding Bates to the mix is a bonus.

How in the world will the Bears outcompete everyone else and sign him to a reasonable contract? We can’t give him a massive contract he deserves, and we can’t tie up our finances in just one position. We need WRs more than DL. Far more, to be exact.

We could land him if we signed someone like Robert Meachem instead of VJax, Bowe, or Colston
Meachem will cost a lot less and would leave room for one big FA aquisition like Williams.
Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!
How will Colston cost "a lot" less than V-Jax or Bowe?
He’s put up huge numbers, better stats than V-Jax to be exact. 5 out of his 6 NFL seasons have resulted in him recording over 1,000 yards and averaged 8 TDs per season. Bowe may not cost nearly as much as either Colston or V-Jax. The only thing I can think of that will lower Colston’s value is the fact he was in a high octane offense in New Orleans. However, he was also the best true WR in New Orleans. Personally, I’d prefer Colston, but he certainly won’t be cheap.

I don't know
I just look at it differently. I think Bennett, Knox, and maybe even RW are respectable receivers. It’s not just them, it’s Martz and the O-line that messed it all up and never let us saw the full potential.
I mean look at the SD game, when things finally started to click, it’s not that the WR corps is just garbage.
With the pass rush, it’s purely the production we miss opposite Peppers.

But we know that a DE will be valuable and useful in our current scheme.
Chicago is where wide receivers come to die. Some of that is the talent, but it also has to do with the position coaching, the playbook, the quarterback (not a problem now), the offensive line, and the playcalling.
There are still a lot of question marks on the offensive side of the ball, and while WR is a definite need, one could say that the safer bet is spending money on an elite DE than an elite WR. I’d be happy with either (or both!).
didn't the Mayans warn us about dabbling in this?

Bears struggle to run inside and the center sets the tone for that.
Hoping that Peppers does the belt dance over Rodgers crumpled on the turf
Receivers and Stanford routt.
First off, my reasons for wanting Bowe over vjax or colston are pretty simple.
Bowe plays in cold weather and has put up great numbers playing with a stable of below average qb’s and no wide receiver help (wasn’t mark Bradley their #2 receiver at one point!?).
Vjax is a west coast warm weather guy who has played with a great qb. Colston is a dome guy playing with a great qb. I’m not saying cutler isn’t a great qb, I’m just thinking those guys are probably looking a little better playing in a friendly home field situation with a great qb slinging it their way.
As far as everyone wanting to get a #1 receiver at a “reasonable” price, well that’s just not gonna happen. If the bears want to seriously upgrade their biggest weakness they are gonna have to pay up just like they did with peppers, that’s just the way it is. If they wanna go out and bargain bin it some more on Roy Williams types then we know they are just gonna piss away the most talented qb the bears have ever had.
Also, Stanford routt was cut by the raiders after al Davis gave him that absurd contract, but it you look at his numbers that dude is a legit shutdown corner. In 2010 opposing qb’s had a 30% completion percentage against him which was tops in the league and obviously with the loss of asomugha it rose a little bit but was still 48% in 2011 which is top 10 in the league. Tillman isn’t getting any younger and we haven’t had a capable corner next to him since vasher’s one good year. If the secondary gets a little better it will automatically give the dline a boost and give them a little more time to get to the qb. I really hope the try to make a move on routt.

Yes sir
and most penalty’s. I’ll just take Tim Jennings.
"Brian Urlacher, coasting down the right sideline. A Sunday stroll into the endzone."
A good pass rusher would make our secondary look good.
How about a safety that can stay healthy unlike Major Wright instead of a corner. I also like Johnny Knox but the man was almost paralyzed and he might not want to play again. Don’t really care if it’s the draft or free agency but 1 and 2 receiver (maybe Roy Williams could stay as a #2?) Defensive End as the top 3 moves. Then next 2 would be left tackle and safety. Someone to compliment Forte (stays healthy and in bounds can hold onto the ball) and a tight end would be nice too but our tight ends were relatively untested so maybe they can stay.
Just throwing this out there I’d like to hear what you all have to say but keep Caleb Hanie? yeah his stats are terrible but he didn’t have a whole lot of support, dropped passes, offensive line issues, questionable play calling, running backs fumbling or running out of bounds. Only difference I saw in McCown was a veteran who knew when to cut his losses and just run like hell. Dunno which is why I ask.
Caleb Hanie does not deserve to stay
Even with such a terrible supporting cast on offense, both Jay Cutler and Josh McCown were able to win games, unlike Caleb Hanie.

Routt was a great shutdown corner while the Raiders were playing their typical man press coverage on the outside.
As the year moved on, the Raiders started playing a lot more zone coverage and Routt struggled. I’d be wary of grabbing Routt for this reason: look at what playing out of bump and run, man coverage did with Asomuagh ( or however you spell his name) when he moved to the Eagles.
Routt is obviously talented, he just doesn’t fit our scheme, and was cut due to his salary and his not fitting what the Raiders want to do now that the Crypt Keeper is no longer calling the shots.
