Looks like an upgrade on Knox

If Bears can find a bigger (physically speaking) WR in FA, Wright would be an upgrade over Knox, and Cutler would likely have three reliable targets (two more than last year).

If it wasn't for his size, this kid is exactly what the Bears need in a WR.

He grabs the ball, has great body control, gets separation, unbelievable RAC ability, and plays fast. I’m just not sure you use the 19th pick on a 5’10"/190 lb guy when you have so many of them already on your roster.

I could also see him being the heir apparent to Hester in the return game if they chose to use him that way as well.

you just made the case to why he would b a great pick

Regardless of size he does everything better than the guys we have at tha same size

I'm not saying it would be a bad pick just that he's more of what we have.

He looks good on this video and against college competition but, as with any draft pick, you never know. I would just like to see them get a bigger guy to give Cutler more options. If they can address that in FA or later rounds than I’d have nothing against Wright for the Bears.

I was very skepitcal of Wright at first.

But he is nothing like any WR that the Bears currently have. He is not the complete answer to the Bear’s WR problems. But I’m not sure any one WR is. With a good FA WR signing, I think Wright would be a great 1st round pick. If Cutler’s arm is better than Elway’s, then it’s sure as hell better than RG3’s arm. And this kid is tougher than people think, he goes to get the ball. And if he runs anything like I think he will at the combine, he’ll likely be gone at #19.

Bearsh!tt!n It ain't obscene- I'm a Bears fan that likes hittin and exclamation points.

What did he do in the vid

that was better than what Knox/Hester can do? I saw Wright make one contested catch (at 1:32)… everything else was wide open. Put Johnny Knox in wide open space against Big 12 secondaries, and I bet he’d make them look foolish too.

Here’s a highlight reel of Knox & Hester. Knox’s NFL highlights look every bit as impressive as Wright’s imo. Maybe Wright is better, maybe not, but I don’t see anything in that video that shows he’s an upgrade.

Because of his size or lackthereof, I was against this suggestion

However, after having a few nights to sleep on this thought, he may be just what the Bears need to add into the receiving corps, given they add a large threat in FA. I could envision the Bears signing someone like V-Jax/Colston and then adding Wright to compliment them as well as Kellen Davis at TE and Earl Bennett in the slot.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

meh... no thanks

Haven’t seen him make a catch in traffic with tight coverage. Every catch in that video was made when he was wide open due to broken coverage, gets caught from behind and likes to move east west instead of north south.
If we add a big receiver, then our little guys will have a better chance of getting single coverage that they can beat. I would get this guy in the third round, but not first/seconf.

THIS

Some nice catches and impressive run after the catch ability, but he was mostly open due to (apparent) defensive errors. He’s a promising prospect but a lot of what we already have.

yes and only yes if

they got a bigger target in FA imo. Seem like a Hester/Knox/Holmes type of player. Maybe a Bit of Steve Smith (Car)

like him more than floyd

Haven’t been a fan of all the floyd talk. Never see any separation in his highlights. Hate to have to get the big receiver through FA, but historically it seems easier to find an explosive playmaker at 19 than the prototypical big receiver. One scout comapers Wright to Greg Jennings. Can play bigger than his size.

by ChiSayers on Feb 12, 2012 9:59 AM CST reply actions

i wouldnt be upset to take him at 19

i would take him or floyd at 19, whomever is there. cutty is the only qb at his level who is working with straight garbage. you have to surround him with some talent. draft one of these two guys, and sign a FA wr.

that being said if there is a player at a different position who the bears like better by all means draft the other guy and get a wr on the second

Kendall Is a player

I dont know that I’ve ever posted here, but Kendall is a really good athlete. Full disclosure, I am biased because hes one of my sisters best friends. One thing that people don’t people don’t know is that Kendall was on the Baylor Basketball team as a freshman. Check out this video of him in high school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvb59rcfkEA You may ask what this video has to do with football, but notice the vertical leap. Kid tracks balls very well and will be able to elevate against DB’s to compete for jump balls, which none of our current receivers can do. Also, kid is a very solid kid. Wont have any questions about his character. Hope this helps on some of your evaluations on Kendall.

by OneTimeUser on Feb 12, 2012 12:44 PM CST reply actions

that first line is what scares me

but Kendall is a really good athlete

That is what has gotten us in this position, we need FOOTBALL players first. I just feel that is we get someone who can draw (and beat) double coverage, then our current group of WRs, Bennet and Dane. I think Knox is done after that injury, Hurd’s in prison, we just CANNOT afford to pay Hester $8.1 Million so he will be gone (unless he restructures) we may have to bring back Roy due to depth depletion.
Actually, I think I just argued myself into liking this… but not in the first round. Draft Jeffery at 19 (unless we sign V Jax or similar) and see if he falls to us in the second.

by Berserker333 on Feb 12, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

I understand that completely.

My comment was more aimed towards the complete package. Kendall is a football player first and foremost, which is why he gave up playing basketball. Kendall, coming from Baylor, may not be a place where you think of finding good football players over the last 20 years, but Kendall ended up at Baylor by choice, not necessity. Kendall turned down offers from the likes of Florida and Texas to play at Baylor. Kendall is not just an athlete, he’s a football player. Like I said I was aiming towards the total package because of concerns on his size.

I am in the camp that the Bears desperately need a big wide receiver such as a VJax or a Bowe with a complementary player such as Kendall. Earl is a great slot, but he’s not running away from anyone anytime soon. Hester has the speed, but lacks in other areas to be considered anywhere near a complete receiver.

To be able to play a larger receiver opposite someone like Kendall would benefit the offense as a whole.

Impressive highlight reel...

For a highschool baller who not even playing his number one sport. He may only be 5’10 but he those windmill dunks and that reverse slam make me think he can “go up and get it.” He’s got a pretty sweet jumper too.

Speed kills

People may talk about his size being a limitation, but I think he’s more physical than you average speedster WR.

I’m torn whether or not the Bears should target him or Floyd. Wright has the home run ability, while Floyd has the consistent production over his four years.

Take it for what its worth.

I know that the Bears were interested in him prior to this year. They expressed some interest in him after his junior year. Now with the change at GM and the fact he is considered a top 3-4 receiver in the draft, this may have changed.

by OneTimeUser on Feb 12, 2012 1:28 PM CST reply actions

I'd take him a lot higher than Alshon Jeffery, that's for use.

And here’s the exciting thing about him (for me): he runs through arm tackles. What that tells me is that he’s more in the mold of a Steve Smith/Percy Harvin guy – aka short but strong and explosive – than a burner who’s limited by size. The kid’s 195. A giant? No. But not a reed, either.

Since 2000, the best rookie season for a WR under 6'0" was...

Eddie Royal in 2008. The next three were Chris Chambers, Lee Evans, and Santonio Holmes who each had about 45 catches and 850 yards.

The best 2nd season was Antonio Brown this year. Besides him, nobody has had 1000 yards in their second year.

Let’s say Wright goes for 45 catches and 800 yards as a rookie… then for 50 catches and 900 yards in his 2nd year… making him one of the most successful under 6’ receivers in the past decade. Are you happy with that? We can talk all day about how athletic he is, but the reality is the CBs he’s facing are also just under 6’0" and are often freak athletes too. I’m still skeptical.

by YaoPau on Feb 12, 2012 10:14 PM CST reply actions

It's a bit silly to look at just plain yardage.

Jennings had a much better rookie and sophomore season, it’s not all gloom and doom under 6’0"

"Brian Urlacher, coasting down the right sideline. A Sunday stroll into the endzone."

by DutchBear on Feb 13, 2012 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

True

Jennings is an exception, and I’d say Santonio Holmes is as well. It’s obviously possible for Wright to be a difference maker by year two, but I don’t think that changes the overall point that it’s rare for a small receiver to be an impact player early on.

by YaoPau on Feb 13, 2012 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

I see everyone is on the same page here, no reason to add that much. I still hope Knox can come back, Hester will be able to help occasionally, Bennett being a solid slot receiver. I see us actually getting a #1 in FA ( we wanna win now deal ). That no.1 needs to get separation and attract double coverage , Davis over the top you can take both safeties and a LB away, were Hester and Knox will kill you. That’s how I see it, of course we can improve that TE position also, and paying RWE minimum veteran salary ads depth ( I know we all love to hate on him ), as well as another big body , that occasionally does ok. I would draft the best available guy at his position , get talent period, not athletes , regardless of height.
