So here is some happenings from around the NFL .....
DeSean Jackson will get the tag from the Eagles for one of two things a sign & trade or a long term deal . Can't really see the long term thing goin down though .....

Dan Conner is expected to be able to test the free agent market . Kid could make sense for us . He 26 and well we need some young LB talent ......

Marques Colston has not been contacted by the Saints about a new contract . Seems that a few folks think that either Colston or Nicks will be allowed to walk . Either would look good in a Bears Uni .....

hmm sound interesting

and some depth for the LBs could be extremely good

If the guy can't get on the field in Carolina

who’s linebackers are (lets be generous here) less than stellar, why do you think he is going to get more playing time for the Bears?

The only LB moves that make sense for the Bears involve bringing in rookies. Everything else would be a misappropriation of cap resources.

Ummm Thomas Davis & Jon Beason are stellar players when healthy ......

True. Beason is very good. Not sure what he was talking about.

And Connor was injured, I believe, which is why he lost his spot. I don’t think we get Connor, though. He can make starter money (and start) somewhere else. I wanted Manny Lawson for our SLB before last year… but he probably played his way into a big contract.

by IOftenPanic on Feb 14, 2012 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

As someone has already pointed out Thomas is always injured

which rarely stops other players getting playing time. Both are over rated by most simply due to being high draft picks but are decent players I suppose. It doesn’t detract from my original point that there is no reason to expect Connor to crack the starting lineup in Chicago, ergo it would be a waste of money. He is 26, which is reasonably young, rookies would be younger.

Beason is a beast period ....

The only years Beason was a beast

were the years when Carolina played two massive tackles as 2 techniques using Peppers and A. Nother to supply pass rush from DE. Beason got over rated because he made a lot of tackles. he made a lot of tackles because he rarely had to fight through blockers as the linemen protected him.

I think nicks will be free colston will get the tag i hope im wrong

But we could use either 1 of the players id be very happy if we signed 2 of the 3 guys talked about.

Looks more and more likely Marques Colston will be allowed to walk in FA

If the Saints are not having any contact with him about a new contract, then pending on how they approach Carl Nicks, they may feel keeping their Pro-Bowl OL together is more important than losing one of their key, yet plentiful weapons on offense. I’d be very happy to see Colston in a Bears uni next season.

I'd be careful putting too much hype behind Colston

He’s a slow, possession WR who made his living playing with Drew Brees in a vertical, down-field passing offense.

I just don’t know how good he would be for the bears

So you still think Marques Colston is slow, eh?

Well time to bust out the FACTS! First, I’ve found links that report he ran a 4.50 in the 40, which considering he is a 6’4" 225 lbs receiver, that ain’t slow at all. Need proof?

Try me

How about this?

Compare that to a 4.51 ran by Dwayne Bowe, as shown here, and a 4.51 by Earl Bennett also shown here, and top it off that Colston has been more productive than either of those receivers, not only is he not slow, he is also consistent as well as productive.

40 times are not and should never be the determining factor as to how great a receiver should be. If that were the case, Johnny Knox would be an all-pro by now, and Larry Fitzgerald would be out of the league. Its all about getting separation and running good routes while getting open to catch the ball. Marques Colston has shown he can do all that, while he runs a 4.50 which is pretty impressive considering his size and ability to go up and get it.

How would he be a good acquisition for the Bears? People want to say he’s not all that great because he played with Drew Brees in New Orleans. On the contrary, what that showed is with a good QB he can produce. Everyone was set to dub Tom Brady and Chad Ochocinco the next great tandem, when that really turned out to be a flop. Marques Colston has been perhaps Bree’s top WR while he has been in New Orleans. Of course anyone from New Orleans will be questioned as to whether or not they can make a name for themselves once they exit that system. Colston most certainly can, and he has the ability to do so.

Agreed... plus Colston has some of the best WR metrics out there.

Maybe you can contribute some of that to the dome/Brees/offense, but the fact remains is that he’s a big target, a go-to guy, catches/fights for balls in traffic and is a great route runner. He’s played 14+ games with 1000+ yards and 7+ TDs in every year of his career but 2008. He’s near the top of the league in Catch %, EPA, WPA, DYAR, DVOA year in and year out… if anything Colston is probably under-rated.

by IOftenPanic on Feb 13, 2012 10:09 AM CST up reply actions

I don't understand why people think he is slow?

He got WIDE open during the game against the Bears, one which I was in attendance to…watch. I like how not only does he produce the yardage, but he also averages 8 TDs per year. Not too many receivers average that amount IIRC

All and all

That’s what matters most, isn’t it? The ability to create separation, something no receiver in Chicago with the exception of Earl Bennett has been able to consistently do for years.

Well asides from Bennett there aren't any good route-runners on the team as well.....

If a receiver can run proper routes he can get separation. That’s how Bennett does it, that’s how Hines Ward does/did it and that’s how Fitz does it. I’m all for getting any receiver than can A) Run proper routes and B) Attack the ball. I don’t care if it’s Colston or if it’s Wayne as long as they improve the offense.

by frenchbears113 on Feb 13, 2012 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

To add onto that

Whomever we sign in FA, we also must pair them with a talented prospect from the draft. We can’t simply go 1 and done with just signing Colston/Wayne. We have to bring in another receiver, as if our big FA signing goes down with an injury, we have to have depth in this shallow receiving corps.

Also

I seem to remember people questioning whether Matt Forte would be any good on our turf as a RB, he did after all play in the Super Dome as well when with Tulane. Those talks seem to have died down, haven’t they?

I'm not a fan of situational comparisons...

…but I think the point (which I agree with) is that Colston has more than adequate speed for the position and his ability to run great routes, separate and catch/fight for balls in traffic make him an elite option. I am a HUGE Colston fan in terms of his talent. I still think any #1 we may bring in, though, may see some some dip in production due to having nothing else in the WR corps and a still very bad pass protecting OL. But you have to start somewhere.

by IOftenPanic on Feb 13, 2012 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

Yup

As much as I like Colston, I also agree he can’t be the only receiver we bring into the receiving corps. This goes for pretty much any receiver they bring in during FA, as youth and depth must be continuously added to the badly neglected receiving corps.

Read what i said, did i EVER mention a 40 time? No. Watch him play. he looks slow as a snail.

He does not look anything close to what you say in terms of speed

Rather, he looks a lot faster than his time indicates. He’s a big guy with 4.50 speed who gets plenty of separation. THATS what I’m disputing amigo.

And what i'm disputing is he's a primarily possession guy

whose stats are blown up because he plays in an offense who throws the ball 80% of the time and 50% of the time down field, as well as playing with Drew Brees. I just don’t see Colston having any upside. Yes i think he’s good, but I don’t know how good because of what I just mentioned. Idk if it’s the fact that he’s good, or if it’s the system and QB. Bowe, however, has proven he can excel with any system they throw at him and any QB who throws to him.

Time to think outside of the box

I don’t think he’s just a deep threat or just a possession guy, rather he has a balance of being both. Bowe hasn’t had a good QB throwing him passes, that I’ll give you. However, the same was said for Chad Johnson when he went to Tom Brady, and look what happened. Meanwhile, even with all the talent New Orleans has, Marques Colston was still the best true WR on the team. Even with all these stars on the team, Colston distinguished himself from the rest. Out of all the weapons, he and Graham were the deadliest weapons. Where its a much easier argument for Bowe, being the best player on an otherwise talent starved offense in KC isn’t always as good as it seems.

How are you going to compare Bowe's situation to Ochocino? Lol

Ocho is a 13 year vet who played when Carson Palmer was considered the NFLs best QB. Everyone knew Chad was done when he left the Bengals, that’s why the Bengals let him walk.
Bowe is in the prime of his career and has put up 1000 yard season with Thigpen and Cassell

Like I said, I like Colston and wouldn’t be opposed to bringing him in. however, if they do bring him in he shouldn’t be the only FA WR they pick up, IMO they’d have to grab Wayne, Manningham, or Meachem as well. If they grab Bowe I believe he can be the only one they bring in and then draft a WR in the 1st or 2nd

Why not apply the same concept you have with Bowe, to Colston?

He can be the one FA receiver brought in, then draft another receiver such as Floyd or Wright in the draft.

A) Colston has injury issues so I'd hate to make him plan A) AND B)

and B, I just don’t know if Colston has shown that he can excel in any offensive scheme with any quarterback

but it just seems like the announcers are always saying

“Colston’s slowed by injury”

Idk I just can’t see him coming in and being the guy who defenses concentrate all of their efforts on. He’s got a lot of weapons in NO to take slack off him.

My ideal situation would be to bring in Reggie Wayne and Meachem and then draft Alshon Jeffery in the first, or Chris Givens in the second

Regardless of Colston being injured, he still put up a 1000 yard season with multiple touchdowns. something we havent had in a long time.

but I do like your scenario of Wayne, Meachem and Jeffery

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!
