Bears linebacker J.T. Thomas charged with possession of marijuana

Photo

It wasn't long ago that J.T. Thomas told Windy City Gridiron about a little boy with epilepsy that he was surprising with Super Bowl tickets, but today Thomas is getting attention for a different reason.

The Chicago Bears linebacker was arrested early this morning in West Virginia for possession of marijuana, after being pulled over for driving the wrong way down a one-way street and exceeding the posted speed limit.

Thomas is the second Chicago Bear to be arrested on drug charges in recent weeks, although his plight is not nearly as serious as former WR Sam Hurd's.

Let's just hope the team can make it though the rest of the off-season without any more incidents... Stay tuned.

Not a great trio of decisions, but it's not that big of a deal.

There’s been much, much worse. Just because he helped kids in need and now got busted for a minor possession offense doesn’t mean he was some sort of an undercover demon this whole time.

Honestly

Possesion of marijuana, who cares? Obviously, it’s not a good thing to be arrested on any type of drug charge, but there are far, far greater tragedies in the world.

I know that Scientists in California have studied the daily use of Marijuana (but not tobacco) and found that this group of people have more sick days and respiratory problems, they have also found regular use of marijuana as damaging to your immune system.

not to mention the effect it has on your brain,it impairs your thinking, it effects your ability to concentrate, your attention span, short and long term memory

So if you want to get something useful out of reading a book it would be best not to smoke weed first.

Again, Mr. Brown,

In my opinion, and based on the extensive research I have done you are terribly misinformed. Who hasn’t studied the daily use of Marijuana? If you knew absolutely anything about the study of Marijuana you’d know that the greater majority of said studies go against every (IMO) ignorant comment you have made here.
Here’s a quote from the National Institute On Drug Abuse (NIDA) It’s posted right there on their website for all to see…

“Research into the effects of long-term cannabis use on the structure of the brain has yielded inconsistent results. It may be that the effects are too subtle for reliable detection by current techniques. A similar challenge arises in studies of the effects of chronic marijuana use on brain function. Brain imaging studies in chronic users tend to show some consistent alterations, but their connection to impaired cognitive functioning is far from clear..”

In case you have trouble finding it, it’s right next to all of the other reasons that the Fox News special undercover report you must have gotten that sorry excuse for “research” from is at best, misinformed. But, I guess that’s the idea, right? As long as people like you, believe it, they’ll print/broadcast it.

by JmShank on Feb 13, 2012 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

funny you should mention the NIDA because that was my sourse as well.

here is an interesting quote from their site:

" marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that, in chronic users, marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.2 As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time."

not only that they also say “Long-term marijuana abuse can lead to addiction”

again if you want to do your best at school or work, best not to smoke weed first.

by Ditkavsworld on Feb 14, 2012 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

You're close.

Typically, you see traffic offenses broken into one of two categories:

1- Infraction (most traffic tickets, non-moving violations)
2- Violation (more serious offenses that are considered crimes, such as DWI, reckless driving, etc.)

Depending on how driving down a one-way is classified (whether others were present on the road, excessive speed was used, etc), it could very easily be considered a crime.

I'm a ninja.

by Dane Noble on Feb 14, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

You are correct sir

given circumstances with “traffic infractions or violation” the extent of the infraction ie the punishment, ticket or jail will depend on the actual “elements of the crime”. Although no two states are exactly the same a common scenario would go like this.

We know that he was driving down a one way street the wrong way, this action led to the police pulling him over (probable cause to stop). Seeing an action like this would led the officer or a reasonable person to believe that said driver was possibly imparied, given the time of day/night that this occured it would reinforce that thought process. Officer approaches gets all necessary info from the driver and checks for any signs of impairment of the driver (bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, any strange odor mary jane smoke alcohol etc.) also will visually look over the car inside in the event the subject left something in plain view wether it be pariphenallia or the actual drugs themselves. If drugs are detected the subject would be detained for further questioning at that time, given the amount and type of substance would then led to a drug charge and possibly issuing a ticket for the violation or adding it as an additional charge ie DUI/DWI.

I almost agree.

But even if it is legal to have an ounce, it is still illegal to buy or sell it.

And that is one of the greater issues. At this point in time, the “devil-may-care” attitude in terms of drug possession/use is focused on the drug user. That is too short sighted. Those drugs are being purchased through networks (even if you are unaware of the network, it probably exists) that connect street gangs to drug cartels. Those street gangs are terrorizing urban neighborhoods, while the cartels are doing their best to completely destroy South America. Mexico is a mess with action-movie like shootouts to the point that the US State Department is warning citizens NOT to travel anywhere in the country.

Also, the real argument most “pro” marijuana users are trying to make is “it should be legal for ME to smoke pot” not “it should be legal to smoke pot.” Why do I say that? Well, pot may or may not be bad for the individual, but it IS harmful to society (which is why the courts allow the government to outlaw it). For example police data show that driving under the influence of pot hampers driving ability similar to drinking, but ask your local smoker and they will proudly proclaim the improvement of their driving skills while high. In other words, no one really believes that marijuana makes the world a better place, they just enjoy it and want to be allowed to do it.

I could care less if it was legalized and taxed to “high” hell. In fact, I wonder how much of a dent we could make in the US deficit with that revenue. But Americans should be a bit more aware of what they are doing and how it effects America and the world around us.

Find out what the other team wants to do. Then take it away from them.

its harmful to society?

You have to balance individual rights against their effects on society.

The American people through their elected officials have decided to accept Alcohol and reject Marijuana. And the the American people I mean the 50% of eligible voter who actually bother to vote.

Hey, either we have laws and follow them or we need to get them fixed.

I really oppose the idea that “we the people” get to pick and choose which laws we want to follow. If it is a law we should follow it. If the law is stupid, we should work to get it changed.

Personally, I do not trust the judgement of most Americans to choose which laws are “necessary.” That’s when we get situations like drunk driving – you know the old “I’m not that drunk, and I don’t want to have to get my car tomorrow.” or perhaps you prefer the “Her mouth was saying no, but her eyes were saying yes” example – both are prime examples of times when a law is clearly being broken but there are always idiots who believe they are more qualified to chose when to follow the rules and when rules are just guidelines.

You know the federal government is breaking the law by making marijuana illegal?

Substance regulation is not a power given to congress and therefore is reserved for the states. This is similar to the 18th amendment when they outlawed alcohol, amending the constitution was required because it was not in their powers to outlaw it otherwise.

Think about how the US has less than 5% of the world’s population yet has almost 25% of the world’s prison population. Half of those people are in jail for victim-less crimes, including possession of drugs. It is so much of a strain on our budgets that there are actually private prisons where people make money off incarceration. How sad is that, in the lad of the free we have people reaping profits off private jails.

No question weed should be legal.

Prohibiting it only makes it profitable for cartels to trade in. Without that artificial price support, they’d have to focus on drugs that are illegal for good reason, like heroin and crack.

But the Commerce Clause gives Congress the power to regulate or prohibit just about anything that has anything to do with commerce. The fact that people buy and sell weed puts it well within reach of the Commerce Clause – Gonzales v. Raich.

"You have a young group and if they start feeling too good about themselves, that’s not a good thing. So it’s my job not to let them. So probably they will hate me. But that’s OK too. My wife hates me and she’s still married to me." - Mike Tice

Ahhh, maybe I pay too much attention to football

We’re in the dregs of the off season. Crappy little stories like this pop up all the time and for just about every team. Maybe I’ll have to go and pretend that I care about basketball or the hot stove league. Hey Mickelson won!

Who hasn't driven the wrong way down a one-way street?

I haven’t seen how fast he was going yet, but the speed limit was 25mph. And who wouldn’t exceed that, if they suddenly realized they were going the wrong way down a one-way street?
And as for the Pot? I’ll say this, anyone who wants to have a strong opinion about marijuana in the United States of America should read, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. If you happen to feel like getting something useful out of a book.

Not looking for a debate on any of this, just wanted to offer my two cents.

I did once, but luckily it wasn’t at 3am in front of a cop.

I may be a bad fan, but...

My first thought when I read this was “we have a linebacker named Thomas?”

If one of our, say, top 6 linebackers get in trouble, then I will care.

do we have 6 LB's lol

One thing I always look forward to...

the moral judgments from others about substance “abuse” issues and NFL players.

Let’s just say “it looks bad for the Bears” and leave it at that.

this^

this is more of an NFL problem than a legal one

He probably didn’t even go to jail. Probably just finger printed him and let him go

We've let this thread go a bit further than normal,

but let’s go ahead and move away from the moral/government debates…

This is definitely a hot-button topic for many, but at the end of the day, we have to remember we are a Chicago Bears blog, and not a platform for airing out socio-political viewpoints.

Thanks.

So you don't want to know who you should vote for in the upcoming election?

Because I’d be more than happy to tell you.

Above all; keep 'em guessing, never let them lose their sense of confusion.
