With more than $52 million of contracts tied up in CBs Brandon Flowers and Stanford Routt, expect KC to let Brandon Carr walk
i guess Finley is off the market

More on Jermichael Finley: Two-year deal is worth slightly under $15 million.
One thing is...
This probably means Bowe is getting the tag, so there is one less FA WR.
that sux, I was hoping Bowe would hit the market

The Bears might want to watch out for the Cowboys. They are desperate for CB help so they may land Carr based off of the fact they would probably be willing to vastly overpay for him.
Agreed. Jerry Jones will drive the price up on any decent CB available.

Yeah, but let's face it, it's all about the Benjamins to most athletes.
They all say they want to win, but when push comes to shove cash talks. If both offers are the same, but JJ is quite willing to overpay, Roy Williams being a prime example.

I'll pass on Carr
Yes, I would love to get a corner that will compliment and one day replace Peanut. However, there are more pressing needs. Getting another pass rusher on the other side of Peppers, WRs, a S, some help on the O-Line, regretfully a pass catching TE again.
yea
id rather spend the cash on a DE or wr. i wouldn’t throw a hissy fit if they got carr and didnt vastly overpay him(i have no clue what hes worth or his current contract)

This makes me wonder
why the Chiefs would be willing to let Carr go. Is this a money issue with Carr…or a thought by the Chiefs that Routt is a better player. I guess what I’m trying to say is if KC is willing to let him go…do we want him?
Who wants a hot slice of crazy?
Carr is the superior player
Signed Routt so they can tag or extend Bowe to a healthy contract.

Hmmmm....
Carr is Superior to Routt? So KC signs an inferior player and are willing to let a better one go?! I don’t know if that makes sense to me…But, the NFL is crazy sometimes.

To put it another way...
Carr is a better player, but KC obviously prefers the value of Routt for the money they will be paying him.

They're managing the cap
They have a lot to spend, but have to be wary of the future of Bowe’s tag and/or impending mega-contract. Pioli is thinking a slight downgrade at their #2 CB position will allow for more flexibility next season and beyond.

Only big name FA I want is Mario!
Let the Carr and all the FA WR’s roll on by.
All the FA WR’s are gonna cost a ton. Bowe isn’t going anywhere. V. Jackson and Reggie Wayne are too old, you might be 2-3 yrs outta them but you have to pay for 5. Colston’s old too and he’s an injury risk and maybe a product of the system. S. Johnson and D. Jackson are headaches and they’ll gonna ask for too much.
We should Draft Floyd or Sanu in the 1st, and pair Mario with Pep to gave every QB we face nightmares!
So u want to go into the season like last yr and the other 3 yrs and do nothing at WR.?
Wr and Ol are your most needed positions to fill i dont no who your watching but it aint the bears.
29 is not too old for an elite WR
He has a good 3-4 years left.

Even if you overpay for them?
Point I’m trying to make is the Bears likely cant afford to bring in two big FA’s. I’d rather take a top 5 DE in his prime over a top 15-20 WR on the downside of his career. No question Jackson or Colston could help the Bears (if they stay healthy) in the short-term. Long term the younger and better overall player is what I take.
Ummm yes we can afford 2 big FA's .....

I'm no salary cap expert,
but from what I’ve read on this site, the Bears are well-positioned for a run at 2 upper-tier FA’s. I personally would like to see a WR and a LT, then draft BPA. But if there’s a WR or LT who could come in and start, and who would fall to #19 in the draft, then I could see pursuing Mario Williams (unless there’s more than one top 5 DE in his prime out there this year).
Holy hand grenades! just read Kaiser's post
I know I read somewhere Bears had about 20 mil to spend, that’s a huge difference. I thought everyone was going Madden Franchise mode crazy. My bad guys. Still think Mario Williams should be priority 1 tho.
IOftenPanic had a good post, too.

If you look at Biggs article....
…you can see where my cap figure/his differ. He’s accouting for all the players who can be cut and their salaries not applied to the cap (or moved off the 51/53 that count). My number was offslightly since I didn’t know that Tillman had a $3M bonus that technically applies and for some reason there is $3M in dead space that I thought was off.
So my figure was bout $6M off. That $22M figure, though, of cap space includes all of our roster spots filled, essentially, so if you move a $400K guy with no guaranteed money/SB off of the roster for a guy who costs $1M in cap space… technically it’s only a $600K cap hit on that $22M figure. Make sense?
I dont see how drafting a WR in the 1st = doing nothing
Rookie WR’s can come in and put up big numbers these days. Sign a 2nd-Tier FA WR like P. Garcon or E. Royal maybe. And you have a Floyd/Sanu to develop as a #1 WR, Bennett at 2, Hester/Garcon/Royal in slot.
I’m probably the only Bears fans who’s not high on the Big FA WR’s. IMO they are too old, not consisent, and with inflated numbers to justifiy a HUGE long term contract.
If we’re gonna spend big $$$, i think it would be better to get a top 5 DE that would help the whole defense. Which isnt getting any younger BTW.
There's definitely some interesting 2nd tier names this year
I’ll add Laurent Robinson and Chaz Schilens… two big workout freaks that could flourish in this system.
Robinson was 6’2", 200lbs, 4.38", 39" vert
Schilens was 6’4", 225lbs, 4.33", 43" vert
Both guys have had injury issues, but if the Bears completely whiff on the big name WRs I hope they bring one of these guys in instead of another mediocre or old talent.
Love Laurent Robinson
Probably because he went to my school and came up big for my fantasy team, but from the couple times I watched him this year he looked like a good redzone target and took alot of redzone looks away from witten.

I tend to agree on the DE...
but signing vet FAs is not the best way to “get younger”. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Bears get R Wayne in FA and draft Floyd or Sanu at #19 and signing Avril or Campbell at DE. I also do not see the Bears spending big money at CB (though they need to stop screwing around with this mentality that Cover-2 requires them to have poor CBs who cannot cover in man or zone), so Carr isn’t likely to be in Chicago either way.
There's a fine line between stupid...and clever!
Campbell is most likely getting the tag
So the DE FA market would have Mario Williams and Cliff Avril as the top 2 available players in that respective market.

Lions might not be able to
They are at or just over the cap:
Years of high draft positioning made the Lions a talented team but also one facing a cap crunch in 2012. Preliminary cap reconciliation leaves the Lions with $122 million in cap commitments, about $2 million above the estimated $120 million cap. And that total doesn’t include three defensive starters who are pending free agents: defensive end Cliff Avril, middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch and cornerback Eric Wright.
DE Franchise tag is estimated at 10.6 million:
Per La Canfora’s 2012 estimates, here are the old and new franchise tag figures:
Quarterback: $14.4 million in 2012; down from $16.1 million in 2011
Running back: $7.7 million in 2012; down from $9.6 million in 2011
Wide receiver: $9.4 million in 2012; down from 11.4 million in 2011
Tight end: $5.4 million in 2012; down from $7.3 million in 2011
Offensive line: $9.4 million in 2012; down from $10.1 million in 2011
Defensive end: $10.6 million in 2012; down from $13 million in 2011
Defensive tackle: $7.9 million in 2012; down from $12.5 million in 2011
Linebacker: $8.8 million in 2012; down from $10.1 million in 2011
Cornerback: $10.6 million in 2012; down from $13.5 million in 2011
Safety: $6.2 million in 2012; down from $8.8 million in 2011
Vanden Bosch is going into year 3 of a 4year/26 million $ deal. He’ll have to get cut I think just to make room for Avril. I really think Avril is in play.

I agree a 2nd tier WR shouldn't cost much and he could help develop our younger WRs.
After Super Mario, I like M. Bennett from Tampa, but he’ll cost a draft pick. If you mean the Campbell from AZ, i think they play a 3-4 D. And I wouldnt mind a CB picked in the early rounds, Kirkpatrick is one of the guys I like if he falls. But only if the Bears address WR and OL in FA.
I keep hearing the D's old umm how many of them made the pro bowl this yr.?
Im not saying dont get no 1 on D this yr but our offense needs alot of work.Next yr we can start worring more about the D there still good for about anthor 3 yrs.I think with the 2 pics we have in this yrs 3rd RD draft they can get some guys on D.we need to get atleast 2 WRS an 2 guy on the OL and thats a must.
I want to sign every good player ever.
But the Bears won’t do it, because they’re cheap!

I'd have to agree
I’d rather them sign a DE and a WR in free-agency, then worry about CB in the draft. Improving the offense and pass rushing are the two most dire needs for this team.

The Giants are perfect example
Their line stepped up their play with all the DBs they lost. I’d say their secondary was mediocre heading into the playoffs.
Id rather have Mario Williams, Avril, or Mathis than Carr or any other CB. They can draft one within the first three rounds to gain depth. Keep Jennings who only gave up one passing TD all season.

It doesn't make them better.
A quarterback getting hit before he finishes his drop doesn’t make a mediocre cornerback better, they’re still mediocre but with a bandaid to cover it up. They are still gonna get be mediocre on the plays (and days) where the line doesn’t put pressure.

Agreed
When we play teams like the packers it seems like the ball is coming out so fast it doesn’t matter how good the rush is, the receivers are open almost right away. Even the best D-lines aren’t going to get there every time and your risking alot having an inadequate or mediocre back four, just look at the lions last game.

Why would you root against this?
Maybe it’s not likely, but there’s no way it’s bad for the Bears, if you’re worried about Salary Cap, I think you cut somebody else. Julius Peppers and Mario Williams are two football players you want on your team. And if you’re worried about short passes, wait until one of them drops back into coverage, or tips the ball to himself and takes it all the way back for a TD and the other teams QB hurts his hand trying to make the tackle? What then?
