Jay Cutler: "Anyone really over 6-2 at this point is going to look good"
It's official, Jay Cutler would like a taller wide receiver to throw to. Earlier today on the Waddle & Silvy show on ESPN Radio, Cutler was asked about the Jeremy Bates hire (which made him "very happy" by the way) and the discussion shifted to potential offensive weapons that new GM Phil Emery could acquire. He praised his former teammate Brandon Marshall and when asked about free agent Vincent Jackson he dropped the above quote.
There are a number of big wide outs that would fit the bill, and my guess is that Emery will not make the same mistakes as his predecessor. He'll actually gather talent around his franchise QB.

Why?
Because the secret might get out that the Bears are looking for receiver help?

Well...
context is important, it kinda reminds me of the whole “he’s not a go up and get it guy” comment about Hester…
Of course if coaches, management, and ownership had listened to that message then, we might not have this interview comment now. Its been three years, Cutler is prone to throw a little high under pressure because of his velocity, and he would like someone that could, I dunno, reach those passes. Its only come up every game or so.

This needed to be said. He should just say "We need a bigger receiver!" What is the office gunna do if he says it? Release him?!?!?!
If the other receivers are offended, call them a "wah"bulance.
Maybe this isn’t meant to be an indictment on the current receivers,
but rather to motivate future moves in FA and the draft. There are some talented, smaller receivers in FA and I know one 1st round projected pick is a shorter receiver.
Even he knows what is needed in this offense
Get ’em what he needs!

Should we be surprised by Jay's comments???
A couple seasons ago Cutler was ready to make Brandon Rideau the next T.O during the off season workouts and pre-seaon. He clearly had good chemistry with him and/or liked getting him the ball because of his size. Rideau lead the NFL pre-season in yards (not all with Cutler) but was still cut before opening day. Cutler loves tall WRs and always has and Jerry Angelo was a knucklehead for never getting him one although Roy Williams was 4 seasons too late to this party.
Just like coach Bill Parcell says… You can’t coach size. By December those small and fast guys get slower and colder…
It wasn't Rideau
it was Aromashodu
but it’s okay we get your point

Light my fire
Or should I say Emery’s fire to sign a big-name and big-time receiver this year.
I think every quarterback in the league wants that. We’re not happy unless we’re getting offensive guys year in and year out.
How about just one year where the Bears find a playmaker at WR?

Doesn't have anything to do with Martz
Aromashodu proved just as worthless with the Vikings.

Doesn't matter
He’s been a journeyman WR for his entire career. Never been a difference maker, never will.

Cutler need to speak out more to the owners to get his life saved..lol
I think theres nuttin wrong with him saying whats true.
Marshall would be bigger than most think
When the bears aren’t on I’ll watch any game. I LOVE watching Brandon Marshall. He’s ridiculous with a mediocre qb. Be tough to get him but it would be epic for these guys to reunite
We'd have gone tot he Superbowl two years ago with Marshall on our team.
Angelo bought the Ferrari but forgot to get the tyres …..
Small receivers arent neccessarily the problem
The problem is we have small receivers with marginal skills at a skill position. Wes Welker and Steve Smith (CAR) seem to get the job done without being over 6 feet tall because they have exceptional hands and field presence, basically they are small but know how to play bigger. We have small receivers that play small, Knox and Hester that is.
Basically being tall isn’t the whole story but if your going for middle of the pack talent that few inches really matters. Basically you better have hands made of fly paper to be a top flight receiver and be under 5 feet ten. So find small receivers with real live skills or play it safe and get bigger guys.

Cutty likes his receivers big, he should get that, being the velocity of his fast-ball, or style of play, doesn’t matter. I happen to like the same type of receivers, when they want to win a jump ball it’s hard to stop them.
by transylvanian bear on Feb 20, 2012 8:24 PM CST up reply actions
agree completely
Give the guy what he wants, I’m just saying it may never have gotten to this point had one former GM do a better job evaluating talent. I assure you if we had Wes Welker and Steve Smith along with a 6foot something deep threat Cutty would be happier than a pig in crap.

Different position
Those guys play the slot and flanker. Split end is where you want a big guy like Jackson/Colston/Bowe. New England has their two huge TE’s that make alot of space for Welker with their size. Carolina has been less successful with Smith without a large X to complement him (compared to past years when they had a bigger outside man).
You can feature the smaller guys with that kind of talent, but you do need some size to complement them to create the matchup you need.
uh
Smith plays outside
alot

Flanker
Yeah, Smith is a flanker. He also plays the slot sometimes, and does both well. He doesn’t play split end. He’s at his best when he has a big split end on the other side.
Smith is at his best when he has a competent QB throwing it to him
it has nothing to do with who’s across from him

Well, No More Bowe
Since KC signed the Oakland corner, they won’t have to franchise Carr. Which means they’ll franchise Bowe.
Damn. Depending on what NO does, we should grab either Nicks or Colston. Or both.

Colston would be awesome
Only problem is I see him trying to resign with NO, Brees is just too good at putting up insane numbers and if I was a receiver I would take a discount to stay in that offense. Its just too easy with that guy in the dome chucking big brown things around for big yards.
But it would be awesome to pry one of those guys out, how much is it going to cost to grab a top tier wide out? 8 mill/year or are we talking 10+mill/year? Fitzgerald got 14mill/year so thats the high end, everyone should fill in somewhere under that number.

And I think he and V-Jax are the two most likely to be available.
Still not sold on V-Jax
simply because his peak was two seasons ago. Colston or start looking around for a possible trade.

No you wouldn't
You’re just thinking as a fan. You would not take a big discount to stay in that offense. As a player, the numbers your QB puts up really don’t matter to the receiver. It’s what he puts up. Championships are nice, but putting another couple million away for your family is much nicer. If you were in his position, looking at probably your biggest payday of your career, you would go for a top end deal. You might take a little discount to not move, but probably not more than 5%. This is the contract where he gets paid. Next time around, he’ll be “too old”.

And by Nicks
I mean the NO guard. Cause he looks a ton better then Williams starting at LG. Maybe we could push williams over to right, which gives us
Webb(or FA acquistion), Nicks, Garza, Williams, Carimi
nice…..as long as Webb disappears like Spider Man after someone gets out a can of Raid.

If anything
Should the Bears pay big $$$ for a LG like Carl Nicks, then the only place Chris Williams could return to is at LT. I’ve seen rumors notably from Rotoworld about mild talks where CW could wind up battling J’Marcus Webb at LT. Wouldn’t that be a nightmare?

Not really because Williams is a better athlete than Webb and wasn't given that much of a shot to grow into the LT spot like Webb was.
Competition is what’s needed in every spot and LT is no different.

Williams was starting to come into his own at LT before the injury
I think he still deserves a shot to compete for the job

but it seemed the William as LT was DOA.
I would love for Williams to knock Webb into spot relief…..just not sure that Tice would allow it.

Nicks is not a priority
We would most likely have to spend Tackle money on Nicks in order to upgrade a position we actually have depth in—we would be better served using that money for positions we actually need. C. Williams was solid at LG and his athleticism was on display every time he pulled in the running game, Spencer showed his worth stepping in at RG and performing very well, E. Williams and Louis have good potential and showed flashes despite being moved around the line.
We NEED WR help—multiple WRs are needed—this is a fact. If we do not land a top teir FA we must sign someone like Meachum or Manningham and use a high pick on a WR like Floyd or Sanu. Our receivers are inept and we do not have a TE who scares anyone. We may have success running but this is a passing league and we have a QB that is hitting his peak—GET HIM SOME WEAPONS!
WR, CB, DE, S, LT, LB, even RB are all positions that we need to address before G so it makes not sense to overpay for Nicks if he hits the open market.

Taller would be great, but...
I’d also like the receiver prospect to have the ability to catch the big brown scary thing flying at him.
"And furthermore, I think Carthage must be destroyed."
That's a big thing in my book.
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...
