Hindsight is pretty nice

I have no problem with him taking a shot at him. It’s not like they had terrific backup safeties the past few seasons. Money is all that was lost, which they have plenty of.

Agreed.

It’s easy to blast Angelo for guys like Merriweather not panning out, but where are the same people on their thoughts of Chris Spencer? While most considered him to be a terrible addition, he turned out to be a decent signing.

Spencer has been serviceable

But compared to the players we could have had he hasn’t been that great of a signing.

Sure.

But that’s not my point. It’s easy to judge one deal after the fact. And calling Angelo a “moron” for the BM signing isn’t fair. Would anyone say the following:

So the Skins cut Haynesworth and Belichick and Reese immediately take the bait…
I wish these morons were gone.

Teams take chances on players all the time, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Given the way the Patriots D looked most of the last COUPLE of years

Possibly. Belichick’s had to recreate his D in the draft over the last couple of years.

I do have to give props for finding players like Woodhead, Hernandez, and that corner from the Raiders.

Woodhead is not very good

When your offense is as prolific and plays in the shotgun spread there’s plenty of room to run. Especially when defenses are geared to stop the pass.

Apples and Oranges

Belicheck has a laundry list history of good moves to back him up. Jerry doesnt have anywhere near the success he does so therefore he doesnt get as much slack.

by Joeb'n777 on Feb 3, 2012 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

Do we know for a fact

That Lovie didn’t have significant input in the decision to sign Merriweather (like Pace, Archuletta, etc.)?

By the way, I agree whole heartedly that Angelo was quite “moronish” at times. I just don’t think that Lovie should get an automatic pass for all of the boned-headed moves that we made while JA was here.

by JimmyMack on Feb 3, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

Of the fellas you list the only ....

…. really bad move was Pace . Archuletta & Merriweather were risks that we needed to take at the time . With Arch I’m sure the thinking was get him in a familiar system and he’d revert to form . With Merriweather it was why not take a shot at a former Pro Bowler .

by MidWayMonster54 on Feb 3, 2012 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Not the point I was making

He’s trying to put it all on Angelo, wereas I would counter that Lovie is also heavily involved in the draft and FA aquisitions. So, crediting the “bad” moves entirely to Angelo is only telling half the story.

And you could always say that these signings are risks that “need to be taken at the time.” And yes, Lovie’s familiarity with Pace and Archuletta was what led to the signings.

by JimmyMack on Feb 3, 2012 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

I agree, Lovie should shoulder some of the blame

Nevertheless, guys like Belicheck and Reese get more slack than a guy like Angelo due to there numerous successes. As with any job, the better you are at doing said job the more room for error you are afforded by your boss.

by Joeb'n777 on Feb 3, 2012 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

appropriate amount of blame, Lovie was the employee not the boss

the ultimate decision was always Jerrys’s it was up to him to make the correct move even if it meant going against Lovie.

Archuletta was basically why we originally traded Chris Harris.

Not signing Archuletta could have helped with the safety carousel.

Steltz, Bell, Jennings, Okoyo, Davis, and possibly Bowman, Idoniji, and Massey are who Emery should concentrate on. And of course Forte.

I think we can safely not sign RW, Merriweather, and Hanie.

by crackedcactus on Feb 3, 2012 10:34 AM CST reply actions

Okoye* and Idonije*

Zach Bowman is done as a Bear. So are his former teammates REW and Hanie. I am not 100% against Merriweather, unless a better option is available, which their should be either in the draft or FA.

Re-sign everyone else on that list, then replace REW and Bowman with a top FA receiver and Brandon Carr, respectively.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

I am not 100% against Merriweather

He only started a handful of games last year before getting himself benched, after which they seemed reluctant to turn to him except as a last resort. That, despite paying him double what the Patriots were due to pay him. I’ll be very surprised if he’s back.
