Why do I have this sinking feeling

the Bears will end up with just Manningham and a 1st round WR. “The Bears signed Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham!”

by YaoPau on Feb 7, 2012 7:25 AM CST up reply actions

We might as well sign David Tyree. I hear he's looking for work.

I just hope the Bears dont over react based on one tough catch. Nicks made some tough grabs also, and I think he’s the better receiver if they are all available. Think I’d rather have Bowe over any of them.

Playing in a SB doesn’t mean you’ll get to one on the next team.

thats what I've been thinking too

although as long as we draft a WR in the first I think I’d be alright with it.

I just don’t want them to sign him and call it good

Floyd and Manningham would be nice

Floyd is basically a younger Marshall with better speed.

We need impact guys now

Urlacher will be 34 in a few months. Floyd’s a nice talent, but he’s not AJ Green… it’ll probably be a couple years before he hits his prime.

Honestly, watching film on the top WRs in this years draft, Floyd looks by far the most NFL ready.....

But I still think he’s a year away from being a true stud. WRs tend to take time to develop and learn the NFL speed difference and how that effects their routes and their concentration.

I agree

Tape shows he’s an elite talent. Gains good separation, great hands, deceptive speed, great balance and body control, etc.

He has the skill to make an immediate impact similarily to Jones and Green.

Does anybody see anything special in Kendall Wright?

I guess I’m not sure what to look for in a small WR with a super-accurate QB… most of his highlight vids are catching balls in stride and just running fast. I look at a Michael Floyd or Alshon Jeffery highlight vid and I see them doing things that 2011 Bears receivers couldn’t do.

One positive I see… David Gettis was two years ahead of Kendall Wright at Baylor. When Wright was a frosh/soph, he was the #1 receiver, and Gettis was the #2 as a junior/senior. Gettis was drafted in the 6th round pick but had a nice rookie year. If that’s the baseline for what to expect out of Wright as a rookie, I’m encouraged by that. Although I’m not positive that’s how it works.

I don't think that pick would make much sense either

It would go against Emery’s belief that it’s a “Big man’s sport”. He was a productive playmaker, but he also had a Heisman Trophy winner throwing him the ball. I just don’t see his skills translating too well onto a team that wants to get big and physical. Michael Floyd would be the better choice IMO.

Like Mike Wallace speed. If Floyd is gone I’d certainly want his playmaking ability on the Bears offense.

Call me crazy but I think Manningham (Like I stated in my previous fan post) would be a big upgrade.

If you look what he did throughout the playoffs and in the Super Bowl he has shown that he can come through in tough situations. A lot of his receptions were tough catches that most of our receivers would not have caught. The man is capable of being a legit receiver and I would welcome him on the Bears squad with open arms.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

by fortefan09 on Feb 7, 2012 8:02 AM CST reply actions

You're crazy......

Fell better? ;)

Seriously though? I think Manningham is a decent player but he only caiubht 39 of the 76 passes thrown his way and dropped six of them. He has some tools and I think he is a solid number two. But I also think that if Knox comes back relatively the same as he left, he’s a better number two option who is more versatile to boot. I honestly hope the Bears don’t try and grab him as the big offseason FA WR the Bears need.

Manningham deserves to be on a roster. But then so do Knox and Bennett. Manningham is an interesting player with some potential that has yet to be reached. So are Knox and Bennett.

But in the end….Knox has done more in a system that worked against him and the rest of the receiving corps and without guys like Nicks and Cruz to take pressure off of him. I’m just not that high on Manningham.

Manningham is a good player, who would add some nice depth.

But if we already have Knox and Bennett, he probably doesn’t represent a huge upgrade over either of them. Given both of their injury histories, though, it would be nice to be able to plug in a guy like Manningham if one of them went down. If we had a # 1 who actually commanded double teams, however, that would make Bennett and Knox both more dangerous.

I firmly believe there is no way the Bears can bring Brandon Marshall to Chicago without overpaying in a trade

It would be awesome to see that happen, but where there are plenty of talented in FA as well as the draft, why trade a king’s ransom if we can simply sign and/or draft our upgrades?

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Feb 7, 2012 8:33 AM CST reply actions

It's not going to happen

Emery values draft picks based on how he wants to build the Bears team. Look for them to draft Floyd, cause he’s basically a younger, faster version of Marshall.

by propheteer on Feb 7, 2012 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

Yup

And, when there are so many good receivers in FA, why try to sell the barn for Marshall? There is no way the Dolphins part ways with him unless an extremely high price is paid.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Feb 7, 2012 8:48 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree completely.

The Dolphins know this isn’t Madden 12 and will act accordingly. They know the score in FA and with a deep draft….

But al of this assumes that the Bears and their noobie GM actually land one of those top WRs. If the top guys are gone and it’s down to Manningham or trading for Marshall, which do you do? Oh, and at that point, the price becomes much steeper because the marker just switched to a sellers market.

The draft is not a place to acquire immediate production, remember that. It’s rare for a first round stud to tear up the league in his first or even second year. Even Calvin Johnson was relatively pedestrian in his first season after being crowned the greatest thing since sliced bread before the draft……

by Timothy Hockemeyer on Feb 7, 2012 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

Why would the Dolphins trade him?

Their team is pretty talented imo… loaded defense, and they finished the year on a 6-3 run. Henne looked good at the beginning of the year and will be back. They have a shot at the playoffs next year. Their other receivers besides Marshall are crap.

by YaoPau on Feb 7, 2012 9:02 AM CST up reply actions

Two reasons.....

First is less important, but not without value……Marshall wants it and he’s been known to make teams miserable when he doesn’t get what he wants.

Second and far more important, they are switching to a 4-3 defense this offseason and have a lot more needs than they had before the changes. Picks or a player for player like Briggs would be awfully tempting, especially with the prospect of Marshall being unhappy, which lowers his value immediately.

Hartline and Bess are both young option who are progressing as receivers and while they aren’t there yet, I wouldn’t call them crap.

Trading Briggs straight-up for Marshall might actually make sense

But with our current depth (lack of) at linebacker. I don’t see any way that Lovie agrees to give up Briggs. That could change after the draft, though. And if we could pick up a stud pass-rusher like Averill, then maybe Lovie would be more willing to part with Briggs.

by JimmyMack on Feb 7, 2012 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure...

how a stud pass-rusher frees up Briggs, who isn’t and hasn’t ever been even a mediocre pass-rusher (not that his job involved rushing the passer)

Frankly, Smith and Babich have proven over and over agian that they can get similar production out of Briggs backups. I don’t think depth is as bad as many do (or how they would even know, since they haven’t seen Thomas on the field and they haven’t seen but a few snaps of DiCicco on the field, either) and I think the Bears have earned some trust in developing linebackers.

Either way, I think it’s all dependant on what happen s in Free agency. If the Bears don’t have to waste picks or players on acquiring new talent, I think that this is all, then, a moot point.

Bears would give up way too much for Marshall and we could even trade away picks for next year which is a big no-no leaving us handicapped without top picks just like in 2010

by beartopia on Feb 7, 2012 9:44 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

He's not "basically a young, faster version of Marshall"

Floyd’s a mid to late 1st round talent, meaning he has like a 1/3 chance of busting completely. I agree that if you can save picks and sign a top fa WR, do that instead, but Floyd is hardly a replacement for that.

by YaoPau on Feb 7, 2012 8:50 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not so sure....

this year the FA market is flooded with wideouts and the draft is deep at the position. The Phins and the Bears both know there are other options for Chicago so it should drive down the trade value considerably.

The obvious argument is that Marshall and Cutler have already clicked. There’s no wait to see if they build a rapport. It’s already there.

But I tend to think that proph is more right in that Emery is going to want those picks. But if the Bears fall short on nabbing a stud WR in FA, then the whole situation changes. You can’t bet on a draft pick to be Brandon Marshall. It’s a fools bet, especially in that reciever’s rookie season.

I could also see player-for-player trade scenarios, especially one involving Briggs. The Phins are switching to a 4-3 defense in the offseason and are in need of 4-3 OLBs. I could see this scenario playing out as the most likely and mutually beneficial trade scenario.

Unfortunately, Its nearly impossible to guess how a new and untested GM is going to respond in these situations. We’ll spend more time learning what Emery is like this year than we will spend accurately predicting what he will do by anything more than dumb lck mixed with slightly educated guessing. :)

Whatever the Bears do in the draft...

I hope they get both a FA WR AND draft one high (1st/2nd). There’s plenty of room for improvement at almost any position they name, so BPA is seemingly the best strategy for drafting. However, getting more than one talent upgrade at WR is a true imperative. Other than Bennett, I have no faith in any other Bears WRs to be more than barely adequate and if Knox doesn’t return or cannot play to his prior level, there is a further urgency. The only caveat I would put is if the Bears got/drafted a stud TE to be a a receiving threat.
