What do you guys think about this?

I think the Bears need to make some big FA moves or trades. I say we Draft Floydd in the 1st round, Trade Briggs to Miami for Marshall and try to obtain Cortland Finnegan in FA this year. Franchise Forte and pick-up a couple of Linebackers in the middle to late rounds of the draft. 2nd round of the draft should be dedicated to a LG or Center. We do these things and I have no doubt that the Bears will be a Stupid Bowl contender next year.

I know people will frown on the Briggs thing but He is not getting any younger and wanted out last year. Trade him and get a proven offensive talent and get another guy in the draft. Marshall is still fairly young at 28 and can immediately improve our offensive potency. Take a couple shots in the draft to replace Briggs and if we can get an elite CB that should put us in a good position.

Angelo is a lifetime participant in the Stupid Bowl.

And with all the reasons you mentioned about a Briggs for Marshall swap… Why would Miami do that!?! This Marshall trade stuff is out of control.

Miami could trade Brandon Marshall

Because they are in rebuild mode. New HC, new schemes on both sides of the ball, and they need both cap space as well as draft picks to make that happen.

Pretty sure that contradicts what the owner said recently…..

I wonder how many people will be upset when marshall does not come to the Bears…..

Sorry it was "mia inside sources"

Was along the lines that they were concerned about attendance (IIRC it was down for them this year) and they want to win now….So much so that they were multiple sources saying that peyton manning is the number one target in FA….

I gotta agree

The Dolphins finished the year 6-3… their defense gave up the league’s 5th fewest points and is full of talent… they actually had a positive point differential this year despite their awful start. This team is a QB away from being a solid playoff team, and Marshall hasn’t said he wants out of Miami, just that he wants to play with a better QB. Trading Marshall moves them backwards, not forwards.

by YaoPau on Feb 8, 2012 7:31 AM CST up reply actions

But, there is no telling how a new scheme on each side of the ball will effect that talent

That defense is now converting to a 4-3 scheme. They’ll need both LBs and DL that fit said scheme. They finished off the year strong, but I also doubt the team will be the same this year as it was when they finished last season.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Okay, so they're adjusting their scheme

I don’t see why you interpret that as rebuilding. If anything, I would think they’re in win-now mode.

Cameron Wake is 30, Karlos Dansby is 30, and their top draft picks in recent years are in their prime right now (Jake Long, Paul Solial, Vontae Davis). They were winning last year with Matt Moore at QB. Instead of a complete rebuild, and trading away their only elite offensive weapon, who happens to be 27 years old… I think it would be a lot easier to throw money at Flynn or Peyton and try to win now.

by YaoPau on Feb 8, 2012 7:42 AM CST up reply actions

So why did they completely change the coaching staff if they are in win now mode?

That doesn’t make sense. A new scheme on offense and defense. They have players to build around, but also need players that fit their new sheme. Here is what I’m thinking, that if I can trade one player that can gain me multiple draft picks and save me some cap space, while giving me a chance to fill many needs, why wouldn’t I consider it? If Peyton Manning somehow winds up in Miami, which I still doubt, then they would sign Reggie Wayne. If Matt Flynn comes to Miami, then they could also bring in Jermichael Finley and draft a stud receiver to replace Marshall.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Changing a scheme is nothing

The Packers changed schemes and stayed competitive. Same with the Texans. And the Dolphins usually sprinkle in some 4-3 iirc. And the offense “change” is just a change in coordinator. That’s a common thing in the NFL.

by YaoPau on Feb 8, 2012 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

But did the Packers clean house while changing schemes?

I think not. Not only are they changing schemes, it’s being done so with a completely different coaching staff. Even here in Chicago changes are to be made with the offense despite an in house promotion to OC. When changes are made to the coaching staff, then changes to the roster will happen.

A great example of trading your one threat on offense was in 2004, when Marty Booker was shipped to Miami. It happened in Denver. It’s happening in Indianapolis. New coaching staffs will always result in changes to the roster, some more dramatic than others. And, Brandon Marshall could be traded as a result.

The two obviously have a good football relationship and have chemistry on the field. Briggs wants a new countract that honestly we probably cannot afford going forward or he wants out. He is still playing at a pro-bowl level so why not trade pro-bowl talent for pro-bowl talent. I thought the Briggs for Osi thing was absurd and highly unlikely. I choose Marshall for a couple reasons though. Bowe will likely be franchised. Wayne is old and probably wont help out too much, Steve Johnson is alright but choke artist, and VJax will want a huge payday. I guess people don’t like the idea. But gotta agree at some of your guy’s points.

While I don't thinnk it's likely, I do think it's possible and mutually benefitial....

Why would Miami do it? They are retooling their defense to the 4-3 and Briggs would do a world of good for the ease of their transition. Both players have been known to be a bit difficult in their respective cities and both have requested a trade at some point.

Will it happen? Who knows. But it certainly is within the realm of possibility and would fill a need for both teams. but I don’[t think it’s likely unless the Bears AND Miami fall short in free agency but in the Bears favor is the fact that there aren’t any top shelf 4-3 OLBs in FA this season.

why would Miami ever want to trade a 28 year old top notch receiver for a almost 32 year old Linebacker.

Doesnt make a lot of sense considering Marshall is their only great receiver.

Wouldnt it be funny if we had another DE with the last name Salters!

by fortefan09 on Feb 8, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Because.....

There are other great receivers on the free agency market, but not proven 4-3 linebackers who have been to seven straight Pro Bowls.

Changing from 3-4 to 4-3 can ruin a season or two. A guy like Briggs can ease the transition greatly. Meanwhile, this is one of the best years in the last decade to snag a receiver.

Not saying it would happen. I[m saying that it wouldn’t be so far out there and it would be mutually beneficial. The Phins are placing a high priority on changing their defense. It really would come down to just how high….along with whether or not Marshall made problems (I mean, why would Denver trade a 26-year-old top-notch receiver for two second round picks? Marshall was their only great receiver and they have yet to replace him). He’s been known to be difficult in the past, and not just in Denver.

Note that I am NOT saying this is what WILL happen. I said I didn’t even think it was likely. But I also think that dismissing it out of hand is silly. There are solid reasons for both teams to make the trade.

Why would he be Pace 2.0?

Pace was 34 during his season with the Bears… McNeill will be 29 next year, and is just coming off a neck injury… assuming he’s cleared to play, I wouldn’t expect that to affect his play.

My issue with McNeill is that he’s just been an average LT for a few years now, and I’d rather give Webb another shot to be the starter for the next decade. But no reason to think McNeill will suddenly break down ala Pace.

by YaoPau on Feb 8, 2012 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

I go back & forth with Webb.

7th rounder, thrown into the mix at RT in 2010, but then no offseason because of the lockout. No work with the coaches or the training staff. Maybe he’s not a self-motivator when it comes to working out. Anyway, lockout ends, and he gets thrown into the LT role. He has some good days, and many bad days. Maybe with a complete offseason at Halas Hall working with the coaches, etc. plus minicamps and OTAs will help him make a leap. I sure hope so, because I think Tice & Lovie think he’s the guy.

by Mike Mueller on Feb 8, 2012 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

Tice fell in love with Webb's size and strength

And believes that he’ll be able to improve his technique in pass-protection. This is probably the year that we find out.

by JimmyMack on Feb 8, 2012 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

It's his work ethic that seems to be the problem

Not time or lack there of. Jurko stated all year during his chats that he thinks Webb has already reached greatness. Sounds like he might be delusional too.
