I want to propose a question for comments. There is now mostly talk about drafting defense with the top picks. I disagree and I think drafting the best offensive player on the board with the first three picks is the best chance to make a deep playoff run. Here is why. In another article on another site it said Smith has drafted 13 D linemen and 8 of those were in the first three rounds. What long term success has Smith produced with that investment? Not much. I am reading more and more that Smith's defenses don't improve because in spite of all his and Marinelli's reputation they are not teachers and do not teach and practice the kind of coaching that develops talent. Time and again our draft picks get traded or released and have decent careers with other teams. Also the cover two scheme is just plain worn out. Chico wanted to deviate from it and thats why he was ran out of town. Smith is a dinosaur from the last century and its time for him to go. I also believe that Angelo was dumped because eating approx 2-3 mil of his salary was much more palpable than eating 10 mil of Smith's salary.Phillips knew changes had to be made. My last observation is that this draft will indicate who really is in charge. Emery has shown creativity and savvy that we have never seen and my hope the draft will too and this very important draft will not have the stench of Smith.
