Dont get it twisted. Shea is definitely a Speed Demon at his position. Yes he has a great motor comparable to some great names in this game. His mental attributes are off the charts. He has been called undersized, but his size is perfect the Chicago Bears scheme. His versatility creates so many possiblities on how he can be used. This kid finds the ball real well, and when he does he makes a play. He reads pressure well and is good at closing the gap. This kid knows how to work his pad level and his ability to bend makes him a formidable matchup. Shea is very instinctive and knows how to play with good leverage. Then his hand play is something out of an MMA fight. Alot of those things are easy to coach up in practice and even after doing thousands of reps its still hard to bring those abilities out in a game. They use to say practice makes perfect. Then i think they upgraded that statement to perfect practice makes perfect. Sounds like Shea might be the perfect example of what to practice.
Yes, during Emery's interview of Shea he spoke of him being a technician at the defensive end position and gave him high praise for his football instincts. But at the end of the day Shea McClellin is still a Speed Demon. No matter how instinctive Shea was if he was slow as dirt he wouldnt be a Bear. A good tell to see if you have some pass rush speed is the 10 yd split. Which is basically the distance you will have to run to get to the quarterback. Shea put some beautiful combine numbers. As Emery said this class was deep in talent at the defensive ends. So their may end up being a couple good ones. But there will only be one Shea McClellin.
When you wonder why Emery picked Shea over other defensive ends just look at this combine numbers. And if you say to yourself these two guys don’t look that much different then think about every other Shea McClellin attribute I spoke of at the top of this paragraph. I think Shea McClellin is a steal of the draft. Yes i said it, a steal. Yes at pick 19. Im glad Shea didnt always have his hand in the dirt at Boise, if so he wouldve been a Top 10 Pick.
