Chicago Bears release TE Steve Maneri to make room for Jordan Palmer

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

In order to sign QB Jordan Palmer, the Bears had to make room by freeing up a roster spot.

Despite all of the injuries announced by the Chicago Bears this afternoon, none of them were significant enough to send anyone else to the season-ending Injured Reserve list.  Quarterback Jay Cutler will be out at least four weeks with a muscle tear in his groin (ouch), and linebacker Lance Briggs will be out an estimated six weeks with a bone fracture in his shoulder.

The Bears had previously stated they would be bringing Jordan Palmer on board as a backup to now starting QB Josh McCown, but they had to free up a roster spot to do so.  With that said, general manager Phil Emery announced Monday afternoon that tight end Steve Maneri would be the roster casualty.

Maneri made an appearance in four games this season, but had no recordable statistics, and was inactive for multiple games.  Technically, Maneri was listed ahead of Dante Rosario on the depth chart, but the team obviously felt Maneri was the guy that had to be cut.

It is worth noting that Maneri's 2013 is $630,000 and Rosario's is worth $715,000.
