The Bears Den: October 25, 2013 - Week 8 news and notes

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Larry Mayer's Chalk Talk - Larry discusses where Matt Forte ranks among the best RBs in Bears history, if it will be tougher to replace Cutler or Briggs, and the chances of the Bears playing in London next year.

Cutler 'plan' still unfolding - Moon Mullin: With the likes of Brady Quinn being signed and Favre getting calls, Cutler will be the Bears’ QB in 2014. The only question is price and it likely has next to nothing to do with the draft, which is a virtual lock to bring in a QB.

Worst defense in Bears history? - Bob LeGere: At its current pace, this defense will yield more points and yards than any Bears team in history. Injuries have certainly taken a toll, but they have also exposed a unit nearly devoid of quality depth.

Emery not worried about McClellin, Peppers - Dan Wiederer: Bears GM steered away from sharp criticism of a D-line that has been depleted by injury and largely ineffective at generating any sort of significant pass rush this season.

Cutler injury complicates Bears decision on his and their futures - Mike Mulligan: It will be difficult to determine his value as his current deal expires but one contract predictor has some surprising figures.

Marshall predicts early return for Cutler - Michael C. Wright: Brandon Marshall believes Jay Cutler will return from his torn groin muscle sooner than the minimum four-week recovery time frame given to the team by doctors.

Alshon Jeffery vying with Marshall as Bears' top WR - Chris Wesseling: Thanks in part to 88 yards on six rushing attempts, Jeffery leads all NFL receivers in yards from scrimmage.

Rookie linemen haven’t let mistakes disrupt progress - Adam L. Jahns: Much of the Bears’ offensive success can be attributed to their rebuilt O-line, and so much of that is rooted in Long and Mills preventing mistakes from snowballing.

[Video] Bye week report - Tom Thayer and Larry Mayer discuss the Bears first seven games and look ahead to the second half of the season.

NFCN preview - Adam Schein: Can the Bears' backup QB hang in a division dominated by the Packers' and Lions' gunslingers, and will the defense hold up without Briggs? Plus, more from around the NFCN.

Five players who will determine whether the Bears remain competitive - Hub Arkush: If these players come through, Bears can weather Cutler-Briggs absences and be playing for a playoff spot Dec. 29.

[Video] Thayer's Playbook - Tom Thayer breaks down two of Jon Bostic's run fits during his first game as a starter.

Joniak's Journal - Marshall and Jeffrey a formidable tandem; Briggs' production; Podlesh punting strongly; Wootton working hard at 3-technique.

[Video] - Jeff Joniak breaks down four keys to the second half of the Bears' season.

Team notes - Larry Mayer: Defense looks to overcome loss of Briggs; R&R for Tillman; Bostic's debut; coaches high on Khaseem Greene.

Brad Biggs' Bears mailbag - Readers' Q&A: Is what's happening to the Bears’ defense karma for messing Lovie Smith over?

Is Devin Hester still the NFL's most dangerous kick returner? - Chris Wesseling breaks down the best and worst of the return specialists around the league.

[Video] - Bears chairman George McCaskey joins Dan Jiggetts and Chris Boden to discuss the state of the franchise, what he's learned since taking on the role, why the Bears are retiring #89, and shares memories of his grandfather. [Part 2]

Henry Melton's rehab process positive - Michael C. Wright: In the midst of all the scrambling to fill voids left by injuries on the D-line, one of the first players to go down is quietly rehabbing and experiencing positive results.

[Video] - Anthony Adams takes his former teammate Julius Peppers for a ride and asks Peppers the hard-hitting questions- boxers or briefs? And why Peppers will not be tweeting anytime soon.

Jack Bechta: The Agent's Journal - Although a new CBA is 7 years away, issues are already heating up, including the two-tiered salary system of a handful of players per team getting huge contracts and the rest at the minimum.

NFL and NFLPA are complicit frauds in player safety claims - Steve Rosenbloom: Cheap-shot artist Brandon Meriweather had his two-game suspension reduced to one despite being a recidivist idiot. There's your NFL player safety garbage in all of its laughable hypocrisy. Jim Corbett: Even Meriweather's DC is ripping him.

Know thy enemy: Packers - Rob Demovsky: Three years removed from leading the NFL in rushing defense, the Packers are currently third and think they are better equipped to stop Adrian Peterson, whom they face for the first time this season on Sunday.

Know thy enemy: Lions - Michael Rothstein and Todd Archer take a look at how the Lions and Cowboys match up, and make their predictions.

Breaking Madden: The Buccaneers and their 44 Greg Schianos - Bucs head coach Greg Schiano is off to an 0-6 start. Clearly, he does not have enough of his esteemed "Schiano Men" on his roster. Let's release everyone on the Tampa Bay roster, replace them with copies of Greg Schiano, and have us a nightmare. [Helmet tip to lmfsilva]

The Rencer doing good things - Robert Rence seeks to embrace his inner Bears fandom, all in the name of charity.
