As a newcomer to this site and a UK Bears fan since 1983, I thought I'd take the opportunity to name my All Star Bears team of the last 30 years. Not an easy task, but since the team was at its strongest during the Ditka years of the mid to late 80's and during Lovie's reign, the majority of the team is made up from these teams.
Offense
LT Jimbo Covert
LG Mark Bortz
RG Tom Thayer
RT Keith Van Horne
WR Willie Gault
WR Marty Booker
WR Brandon Marshall
QB Jim McMahon
RB Walter Payton
I've gone for three WR and no FB, as the fullback role is diminishing in the current game. The OL is mostly made up of the 80's squad which was a very good line [we'd do anything for players of this quality today] and was always overlooked due to the dominance of the great defense at the time. McMahon gets the nod at QB, he was injury prone but when he played the team always found a way to win, plus he won a ring! Honourable mentions must go to those narrowly missing out, such as Jay Hilgenberg, Rueben Brown, ‘Big Cat' and the vastly under rated Neal Anderson, but good as he was there's no way you can leave out ‘Sweetness', one of the greatest Bears of all time.
Defense
DT Steve McMichael
DT Dan Hampton
DE Richard Dent
SLB Brian Urlacher
MLB Mike Singletary
WLB Lance Briggs
CB Donnell Woolford
SS Mike Brown
FS Gary Fencik
I've gone for the 4-3 as the Bears have pretty much always played this way. Most of the DL picks itself, with only Peppers breaking up the great 80's lineup. Trace Armstrong and Tommie Harris [injury hampered] miss out. LB was a n easier task as I've picked three of the best LB's ever [Butkus]. I've picked Lach out of position at strongside, but he can play there no problem and there was no way I could leave out Singletary. At weakside, Briggs gets the nod over Wilber Marshall, as great as Marshall was, his career wasn't as long in Chicago and Briggs has been a model of consistency. In the secondary, Peanut [interceptor and fumble enforcer]and Donnell Woolford [over Leslie Frazier] man the corners while Brown [one of my favourite ever Bears] and Fencik roam the middle.
Special Teams
PR Devin Hester
KR Dennis Gentry
ST Corey Graham
Glynn Milburn and Dennis McKinnon miss out in the return game and Ayanbadejo loses out to Graham as the special teamer.
Quite a hard task to pick the team, but this team would rock.
