Notes and observations from practice

Every minute counts - Jon Greenberg: The new first-day conditioning test set the tone physically and it looks like the next couple of weeks will test the players mentally, as Trestman keeps his camp fast-paced.

Bears put pads on, but precaution paramount - Brad Biggs: There is working hard and working smart, and the Bears are aiming to do both while protecting a roster that hasn't had any noticeable injuries through the first three days of practice.

Cutler Watch - Adam L. Jahns: When given time, Cutler was able to connect with Marshall, Jeffery and Martellus Bennett for big gains. Trestman was ‘really pleased’ with his QBs.

Matt Bowen: Scouting the Bears - As expected, experienced Bears defense has the jump on the offense during the first practice in pads Sunday; the depth of Trestman's playbook will take time to perfect.

Trestman unfazed by O-line’s spotty first practice in pads - Mark Potash: The news wasn’t that the Bears’ O-line struggled in the first practice in pads, but that the coach acknowledged it.

Position battle - Moon Mullin: For a change, J’ Webb isn’t the top OL concern as competition is underway for the RG position.

Steven Schweickert: Training Camp: Guard and WR competition

Long gets physical in pass-rush drill - Jeff Dickerson: The rookie will undoubtedly commit the occasional rookie mistake this season. But any questions regarding his strength were quickly answered on Sunday.

Observations from camp - Jeff Dickerson: Jeffery shines for third straight day; Marquess Wilson also making plays; revamped O-line predictably experienced growing pains in blitz pick-up.

Brad Biggs: New FB Tony Fiammetta learning offense on the fly; Jeffery impressing; more from day 3.

Notes from camp - Adam Hoge: O-line struggled on first day with pads; Long looks like he has the tools to contribute; Cutler's accuracy not great but going through progressions; McClellin noticeably stronger.

Notes from camp - Bob LeGere: Bushrod likes what he sees in Long; Wootton not focusing on contract; player safety paramount; Craig Steltz sighting. Dane rejoices!

View from the Moon - Moon Mullin: Frey, Jeffery, McClellin and Wilson all made plays in pads, while Long and Brown rotated at Guard and Slauson played some Center. Long using offseason MMA training.

[Video] View from the Moon - Practice not quite as physical as in previous years; Long making an impression; ball distribution better than last season; more observations.

Bearsss

Bears recoup money from Sedrick Ellis - Brad Biggs: Replacement Jamaal Anderson will take up almost the same room under the team’s salary cap.

Sedrick Schweickert: Bears get back Ellis money and more Camp notes

Jon Bostic bears heavy burden - Adam L. Jahns: Bostic seemingly has come in with the right outlook. He is appreciative of the chance to learn from Briggs, Williams and Anderson. And they’re taking notice of his character and approach.

Bears won't be forced into Cutler decision - Barry Rozner: Phil Emery is his own man and will do what he thinks is best once he figures out what that is. And when it comes to Cutler, Emery has obviously not made up his mind.

Sam Householder: Emery smart not to extend players

Bears players in favor of HGH testing - Brad Biggs: Bears players are in favor of tests that will level the playing field in the eyes of some and eliminate suspicion or curiosity for others.

Brian Urlacher set to join Fox Sports 1 - Adam L. Jahns: A FOX Sports spokesman confirmed that Urlacher will be featured on “FOX Football Daily” this coming season.
