Bears backup QB Matt Blanchard fractured knuckle in win over Chargers

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Spor

The Bears will look to add another QB this week after losing a backup to a broken knuckle.

The Chicago Bears aren't saying how long backup quarterback Matt Blanchard will be out, but a broken knuckle will sideline him long enough to have the team scrambling for a third QB option heading into next week's contest versus the Oakland Raiders.

"I'm not sure about the time that he'll be out, but we're sitting here with two quarterbacks going into next week," Bears coach Marc Trestman said. "Certainly that's something that we're gonna have to repair fairly quickly to get a third quarterback on the roster."

Michael C. Wright points out that Jamarcus Russell could potentially be an option, as well as Trent Edwards and Jordan Palmer.  Unfortunately, Rex Grossman is not available, as he re-signed with the Washington Redskins this past Spring.

Blanchard was injured in the 3rd quarter in last night's game versus the Chargers, and did not return.

I don't know which knuckle he fractured, or how bad it is, but that doesn't seem like an injury that is only going to take a couple weeks to heal... And certainly not an injury that a quarterback could rush back from.  Whoever the Bears sign this week could end up hanging around for a while.  And Bears fans know all too well the significance of their backup quarterbacks.

Stay tuned...
