Mike Ditka: "I’m a Bears fan, I hope they win a championship. It’s time!"

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Spongie linked this up in the Bears Den this morning -- a daily must visit for Chicago Bears fans -- but we wanted to spotlight the article that Mike Ditka wrote for the Chicago Sun Times.

Legendary former Chicago Bears player and coach, Mike Ditka, was back at Halas Hall yesterday, imparting some of his wisdom on the current crop of Bears players and coaches. Like him or not, if anyone understands what it means to be a 'Bear', it's Da Coach.

Ditka wrote an article for the Chicago Sun Times about his visit, which you can find here. He didn't waste any time addressing his Bears fandom.

It's time to dispel the notion that I'm not a Bears fan.

Yeah, I was fired by the Bears, but that's life. There has never been a time I was not a Bears fan. I have a right to be a Bears fan as much as anybody. I played on a championship team and I coached a championship team.

Ditka receives a lot of crap for his admiration of anything that isn't Chicago, but as fans, we can't expect him to have blinders on when discussion the National Football League.

On his visit, Ditka sensed the excitement that a new coaching regime brings to a team.

His admiration for the franchise shined through when he told the team,

I told them that they have the best opportunity in the world. They're playing in the greatest city for the greatest organization that was founded by Mr. Halas. I signed two contracts with Mr. Halas, one as a player in 1961 and one as a coach in 1982, and it was the two greatest contracts I'll ever sign in my life.

He really enjoyed his day at practice, he talked with GM Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman, then with Jay Cutler and a few other players, before addressing the team when practice ended.

In his article he even gave a watered down version of his famous, "Those who live in the past are cowards and losers", line.

One thing you never want to do is live in the past. You live in the present. You deal with the present and you look to the future.

Hopefully the future is bright for the Chicago Bears, and for Mike Ditka.
