T.I.T.A.N.I.U.M.'s Week 2 Bears Review

Food For Thought:

The one group I have been unimpressed with so far is our trainers/medical staff. I still don't understand why White's shin issue wasn't handled better. I do not blame the coaching staff nor White for the miscommunication of his injury. To make matters worse I witnessed the wrong way to handle Wilson's hamstring injury which leads me to question the true intelligence of NFL caliber training staff members. He pulled a hamstring running a fly route and the first thing our staff does is go stretching it. Some of you may not comprehend my complaint but just know that shouldn't have been done.

Quarterback

I wouldn't call Cutler's performance impressive but I walked away from the game proud of what Cutler accomplished and how he went about his business. We are definitely witnessing Cutler's continued understanding of our offense. Cutler looked good on his scrambles and we also witnessed Cutler improving on his understanding of when to take his shots down field. Clausen's performance was back up worthy. Hopefully we never have to see him on game day.

Final 53: Due to our runningback and wide receiver situation I look for us to only keep two quarterbacks on the roster.

Runningback

Our runningback stable is looking better every time we get the opportunity to see them. I still have hopes that we retain Carey. The one thing I've been happy about is our play calling, we seem to stick to the plan regardless of a couple run stuffs and we eventually get what we need yardage wise. I think we should definitely retain Carey because Langford and Carey are our future backfield. Retaining Perry only benefits our special teams. If we retain Perry then we would definitely have to cut Mariani, which would also help our case in retaining a certain number of receivers. I have been impressed with Perry's returns just as much as Mariani, but Perry has had less opportunities to return the ball.

Final 53: Daniel Thomas seems to be out of the race. The battle remains between Carey and Perry. Hopefully they are both retained. We give Perry special teams credit but one thing I noticed Saturdays was Carey playing special teams too, he just isn't a returner.

Wide Receivers

I personally think our current receiving group is the best we've ever had. Yes I just said that and I mean it. The one guy that doesn't fit into our group is Mariani, but I understand his presence because of special teams. We have a nice group of route runners on our squad and they all seem to have a nice pair of hands. I've taken notice that most of you are unimpressed with our group due to injury but I think the system Gase has put into place trumps the actual ability of each receiver. The system is set up to get the ball in a receivers hand, what happens afterward is up to each individual receiver's ability. Most of you didn't know who Devante Adams was before last season now he is at the door to stardom. We have potential Devante's in Meredith, Bellamy and Lawrence.

Final 53: Last report I spoke of Cruz and his potential and now I confirm the coolness of having a welker-type but he won't be making the team this year.

Tight Ends

Final 53: As of right now I see Bennett, Pascoe, and Rosario locking down a spot with Miller close to making the team. I think both the coaching staff and fans are looking for something from Miller that will force us to keep him on the final 53. (this remains the same as last week)

Offensive Lineman

Final 53: Our interior three looked really aggressive and impressive this past Saturday. The Leno experiment is a failure. Put the young kid back at right tackle until we find a viable option. I hear everyone's scream for Jake Long and then I wonder why he hasn't been picked up, hasn't that crossed anybody's mind. Where is Eben Britton when you need him. The battle for roster spots remain between Ducasse, Ola, and Leno.

Defensive Lineman

I couldn't be more happier with how our defensive line is performing. Will Sutton is still showing up big. Jarvis Jenkins is starting to come alive from the defensive end position. This coming Saturday is dress rehearsal and I'm super stoked about it. One thing that came to mind the other day was the fact that we have for so long been known as a 4-3 team but let me remind you guys the Bears may actually be among the innovators of multiple blitz and stunt schemes. I say that to bring out the point that we are not embarking on a new realm but returning to who we truly are. Thank you Vic Fangio.

Final 53: A roster spot battle remains with Dunn, Washington, and Williams.

Linebackers

We went into the offseason with this position being one of our biggest question marks. Now that we are approaching preseason week 3 I think this group along with the runningback and receiver group are our deepest. You can't help but to be impressed with Shea and Jones in the middle, not because they have done something spectacular but because they have brought the most consistency from the position since Urlacher and Briggs. Whoever our coaching staff decides to start at our outside linebacker positions I trust will get the job done because there has been multiple guys getting it done from the outside. I'm still looking for more from Lamar Houston and I hope we get the opportunity to see something positive this coming Saturday. This past Saturday McPhee looked like the player we heard he's been in camp. I have not been impressed with Willie Young and I hope we can get something out of the deal with him. Young is making too much money to just be sitting on the bench. Acho showed up again this past Saturday. The one thing I see they're doing with Acho is bringing him from both sides which tells me they are grooming him to be the backup at each side. Time to take out the trash, starting with Bostic and his continued poor performance.

Final 53: The battle for final spots will be amongst Bass, Timu, Young, and Bostic.

Secondary

I was wrong last week. Vereen wasn't an epic failure but his lack of flare led to an opportunity for Amos to start. Adrian Amos didn't disappoint. I hope Amos continues to build on his progress made so far. I find myself wanting to defend Kyle Fuller this week and so I will. Fuller has caught some negative comments from fans this week for his coverage on T.Y. Hilton, who caught his one pass of 40 yards. The one thing that should be brought out is the fact that the secondary was in a cover-4 so Kyle was defending a zone not playing man to man which might have put him in a better position. I think we should cut Kyle a little slack because we must be mindful we don't have a long list of Kyle Fuller mistakes to be putting him on trial just yet. For those of you who happen to notice Fuller's missed open field tackle during a zero route let me bring out the point that Kyle was lined up 9 yards from Phillip Dorsett, it's highly unlikely any cornerback in the league makes that tackle. There is an unusual quietness coming from the cornerback position so far and that might just be a good thing. The quietness may be due to our front seven guys getting the job done and applying pressure on the quarterback so far.

Final 53: The roster battle will be between Hurst, Mitchell, and Louis-Jean.

Stay Tuned for next week's post game T.I.T.A.N.I.U.M. review. Final 53 battle predictions are subject to change.
