BBK's Mock With and Without Trades

With free agency well in to the second week and the majority of the craziness past, team front offices across the league are now laser-focused on draft preparations. Pro days, film study, scheduling interviews with potential draftees, and meetings are filling the days of coaches and GMs. The big board is starting to come in to focus, or it should be, for most teams. God only knows what they have going on in Cleveland for their war room.

The trick with mock drafts is trying to put together picks that you think they should make coupled with a prediction as to what they are actually going to do. But it isn't as easy as just looking at a big board and assuming that all teams will go BPA. You have to look at the big board and look at the teams, GMs, and coaches draft histories and the teams needs. And even if you take all of these things in to consideration and get it right, they may change their minds about how they draft this year or they may not prioritize the positions that you would think they should. In the end, mocks are just a guess at what you would like to see the team do.

In this mock I have made some assumptions. At the writing of this mock, the Bears have not signed Tony Jefferson or Ronnie Hillman and it would have no impact on this mock if they did. If there is overlap, say for SS, then so be it. The Bears could use some depth at safety.

Also, I have done two different mocks for two different contingencies. The contingencies hinge on talent availability at the #11 pick. The first contingency mock is if Tunsil, Ramsey, Buckner, or Stanley are still there at #11, the Bears will take one of them and not try to trade back. The second contingency is if those four players are not there and at least one of the top 3 QBs are still there. If at least one of the top 3 QBs are still there, the Bears trade back with the Jets so that they can jump ahead of the Rams and Saints to grab a good QB. So, in the event that the Bears do trade back with the Jets, they will swap first round picks and the Bears will pick #20 in the first round and they will also get the Jets 2nd (51) and 5th (#157) round picks. Another point is that I do not include a pick for a RB or TE in either contingency mock. The reason is that the Bears have 4 RBs and 3 TEs on the roster now. I have the Bears taking Dan Vitale and he can bridge between the two positions for this upcoming season. That being said, they could address both positions next off season but there are too many needs on defense for luxury picks on offense, which seems pretty set compared to the defense. Also, in the contingency that the Bears don't trade back, I have them taking Stanley because he is the one player of the four that is most likely to still be available, if any, at #11.
