Which schools do the pros scout the most when looking for the best of the best college football players? I decided to compare the first one hundred draft picks taken in 1967 to the first one hundred picks taken fifty years later in 2017. In 1967 the top one hundred picks came from fifty-seven different schools, while in 2017 they came from fifty-four different schools. If you guessed which schools were included in both lists, you could probably come up with some of the names, but it is a surprising list. Twenty-one colleges saw at least one player taken among the first one hundred picks, but only two schools saw three or more players taken both years.
The biggest loser in the race to stay relevant was either Notre Dame, which went from seven picks among the top one hundred in 1967 to just one in 2017, or San Diego State, which went from five to zero. Two states saw players selected from three different schools in both years. The 1967 Big Ten saw three schools make both lists, but the 2017 Big Ten has four since Penn State started the whole conference-jumping square dance years ago. You might think that Nebraska would make five, but the Cornhuskers didn’t land anybody in the top one hundred this year.
I awarded points for each slot in the draft on a sliding scale. The first overall pick was worth one hundred points, and the one hundredth pick was worth one point. With that scoring system in mind, these were the schools that saw players drafted among the top one hundred picks in 1967, and in 2017. I will have to do more research on the subject, but Texas seems like the most overrated major football program in the nation. It keeps surprising me that Texas A&M seems to fare better on draft day that the Longhorns so.
