2018 Chicago Bears Mock Draft

You probably sighed when you saw the headline. I realize these articles are worthless even in the weeks before a draft, let alone before the preceding season has even begun. That said, we haven't got much else going on right now. Consider this a chance to get acquainted with a few of the prospects playing for next year's draft class. After all, 2017 is a continued rebuilding year for us and the 2018 class will go a long way in fleshing out positions with an infusion of young talent.

Round 1 – Mike McGlinchey OT Notre Dame

This makes too much sense. We've seen it a thousand times. A team drafts a QB early and then adds everything possible to give them the best opportunity to succeed. McGlinchey would have been the top tackle this year had he chosen to enter the NFL. He is a capable run blocker and an elite pass protector. He has pro bowl potential. If he and Trubisky panned out as successful prospects, at the all-important QB and LT positions, the sky is the limit for that offense.

Round 2 – Iman Marshall CB USC

Amukamara is on a 1 year deal. Fuller is on the last year of his contract. This position is quite thin next offseason. Marshall is a press man corner, which Fangio should appreciate. He has some issues with defensive holding but it is a result of an aggressive play style. Richard Sherman would be a good player type comp. Receivers in the division would hate facing off with him.

Round 4 – Darren Carrington WR Oregon

Another position where multiple one year deals will be ending. Oregon has really lost its competitiveness at the national level but the majority of that is attributed to the failing defense. Carrington hasn't blown the top off of games but he has been consistent. He can rack up yards after the catch and has good size at 6'2".

Round 4 – Josh Sweat OLB Florida State

Sweat is a former #1 overall recruit in 2015. Injuries have been his obstacle, specifically a torn ACL followed by a meniscus tear. Knee injuries have always proved persistent and frustrating. Despite that, he has appeared in 23 games and this 6'5" 250lb edge rusher is an enticing prospect. That said, he may very well destroy the combine and go much higher than this, despite the injury considerations.

Round 5 – Chad Whitener ILB Oklahoma State

Many ILBs come out of college with a nose for tackling runners out of the backfield. It's far more difficult to find one proficient at pass coverage. Whitener is particularly capable in zone. His eyes remain on the QB and he has great feel for receivers over the middle. He has okay speed as well so he is well suited to play an oversized Jack.

Round 6 – Christian LaCouture DE LSU

LaCouture is returning from a ligament tear that kept him out of all of 2016. Assuming he can return to form and retain his health, he will be an effective run-stopper. He won't provide anything as a pass rusher, but could be valuable as a rotational piece.

Round 7 – Drue Tranquill S Notre Dame

Tranquill plays safety at 225lbs. He is a run support specialist and is a proficient tackler. He should excel at ST in the pros. There is even an outside chance that he is a candidate for adding weight and moving to LB.
