Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jeez, I Cannot take it anymore!

All this...The Saints are Americas team this, Our Countries team that...What a load of crap. How about ESPN send one of their beloved fat retard reporters to New Orleans to all those who have been displaced from their homes, to those who have lost loved ones in Katrina and ask them if the Saints are repairing their city and making everything okay for them? Maybe New Orleans shouldn't have spent the money renovating a friggin' football stadium and used that money to build homes or shelters for those whose homes were swept away. The Saints are fixin' SHIT in New Orleans, doesn't ESPN know that the people who are attending Saints games are those who were nowhere near the danger of Katrina, because those who lost their homes probably cannot afford to be spending 100 bucks a pop on a fuckin' football ticket. Good lord. Wasn't there a great Chicago fire like 60 years ago or something...maybe the Bears should be Americas team because after all, they built new buildings to replace those lost in the fire! Because that is what football teams do, they rebuild cities!

hmm
ignoring for a second that his chicago history is a wee bit off (the fire was in 1871) I do agree. There is still a considerable amount of work to down in New Orleans. They say that it helps the people get back to normalcy. The people who most need that are the people who's houses are still in shambles. Hopefully this weekend the Bears can put a stop to the talks about the Saints.
first the Rush...now the Bears.

Abso-f'ing-lutely
About time someone called this out.  It's almost as if so long as everyone cheers for the Saints they're doing their civic duty.  That a Saints Superbowl win is a magic wand that will wipe away the shame of Katrina.  Why don't they send one of their sports-Barbie or sports-Ken reporters down there to cover what the place really looks like?

Colbert's take
Did anyone watch the Colbert Report last night?

I don't see any of the clips up yet (check here), but he led off with NFL playoff coverage. Obviously, Colbert's not a huge fan of the Bears (though he didn't go so far as to call our D "Godless killing machines without souls").

But he's also a big Saints booster. Apart from his well-known Catholic sympathies, he says that if New Orleans wins the Super Bowl, all Katrina-related problems will be solved and the Bush administration will be totally absolved from any blame for inaction. So... go, Saints.

(After this, he brought Lynn Swann on to help trash talk the Bears, Pats and Colts, and Swanny offered some very incisive analysis of the Bears: 'Rex can't keep giving up 3 or 4 turnovers a game.' Gee... welcome to Week 13, Lynn.)

by Danimal on Jan 18, 2007 9:40 AM CST reply actions

You mean the same
Lynn Swan who ran for office and when Keith Olberman(sp) asked him political questions had no idea what he was talking about and said he wasn't prepared to answer those types of questions, that one?

Because he sure is top notch.

You probably know this ...
but Colbert is being satirical, right?

I did watch that as well and laughed my ass off.  That is one funny dude.

Well
Katrina put a damn tree in my house and left me without power and gas for about three weeks.  However, it'll make me feel alot better about being a victim if the Bears win.  Woe is me America!

Not to mention...
their asshole owner wanted to uproot the team even after the Katrina disaster. Brees and McAllister are great stories, but not everyone on this team is a hero. The guy at the top is one of the most quintessential examples of me-first capitalism that is the problem with many ownership groups in sports today. I don't want to see him rewarded with a Super Bowl team. The fans deserve it, but he certainly doesn't.

G ...
great link.  I read the whole thing and chuckled throughout.  Was that an online chat or a transcript of a radio show or a live-blog or what?  I couldn't tell.

Pretty clever banter, and really the most in-depth, un-emotionalized analysis of the Saints I've seen in a while (they had a much weaker schedule than the Bears this year, and that somewhat inflates their offensive 'juggernaut' #'s).  Also, didn't they lose 6 games?  I mean, are they really that invincible?  WTF?  Jaworski and Jack Del Rio made it sound tonight on ESPN like the Saints were going to kill the Bears, no questions asked.  Well, we shall see, my friends.

Saints are done!
I don't even think this will be a game.  If Rex controls the ball (and that can be a big IF) we will win going away.  The Saints are not good enough to win this game.

Experts?
Look at they're picks for last week.  Collectively they're under .500.  A monkey that can flip a coin could have done a better job.

Merrill Hoge
seems to be the only one who knows what's going on and he hasn't made his pick yet.

Just watched "Inside the NFL" on HBO and they all picked the Saints as well except Costas who only picked the Bears because he wants to catch up to Collinsworth who he's 2 behind.

Bill Simmons's take

BEARS (-2.5) over Saints
No, but seriously ... EVERYONE loves the Saints in this game. I can't remember a bigger bandwagon pick in all the years I've been writing this column. Even if you check any gambling site that gives you the percentage of money being wagered on each team, the Saints are getting 68-75 percent of the action. Everyone has them pencilled in for Miami. That gives me the willies. And since the other two "makes me nervous" components of this game (the Rex Grossman Roller Coaster versus a warm weather dome team playing in 30-degree weather) cancel each other out, well ...

The Pick: Chicago 27, New Orleans 20

This is a very unique situation for a Chicago team
In almost ANY championship event that a Chicago team has been involved in -- they have usually been the "country's team." Certainly, the 85 Bears were just that.

ANY time the Cubs stumble into something, they would be the team that America would want to see win. (1984, especially.) 2003, probably, since there are really NO Marlins fans. That was just an event to attend for them -- something to do.) Certainly, in the Michael Jordan era Bulls were the country's favorites. Nationwide, there had to be more White Sox fans than Astros fans two years ago. (I wish I could place the Blackhawks in this discussion, but for more, please refer to www.wirtzsucks.com.)

But this time, America has adopted the Saints. That's cool, I understand why. For the first time, we are in this unusual position. It IS different.
I've watced San Diego news anchors, who couldn't tell a hockey puck from from a Jai alai cesta basket say, "Well, who wouldn't be rooting for the
Saints?" (Since they seem to think the Patriots will in the AFC Championship, and the Bears just don't have a chance)

Don't let it get to you. Nobody gave a damn about the 84 Pads and the 03 Marlins but they won. So, play the underdog. Many times, it works. The pressure is placed on the 'favorite.' (Ironic, though, since the Bears are a 3 pt favorite.)

Let the Saints get all the attention. Trust me, Drew Brees ISN'T Johnny Unitas, Dan Marino, and Joe Montana all rolled into one. I'd be a bit concerned if this was in the Dome. But -- it's not.

"Who dat?" Well, it's Da Bears, of course -- and the rest of the county will be be sad. Too friggin' bad.

The Superbowl What?

Oh really?  Perhaps you are conveniently forgetting this little music video that captivated the nation 20 years ago.  I think that the fact that the Bears were able to even show their faces at the Superdome after that video aired shows just how tough that team really was.

I really have no idea
what your point is? The 1985 Bears were "America's Team," and I stand by that. The Patriots were the "Washington Generals,"  patsies, to be stepped on. Their only support came out of their home market. (And, their played their role of stiffs very well.) I have NO idea what the "SuperBowl Shuffle" has to do with anything I speak of.

Right now, the Bears are in complete underdog status, as far as America is concerned. That's MY point, that's what I was trying to prove NOW. However, the Bears aren't a bunch of 'stiffs." The rest of America will realize later the Saints were the true underdogs.

I don't think you read my post at all. Your replay doesn't make any sense.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jan 19, 2007 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Besides
they will be the Los Angeles Saints as soon as Benson can point his parasol toward the west. Book it. Sad to say, nobody lives in New Orleans any more. More professionals are leaving the city. The team will not have a season ticket base. Trust me, it will be a sadder day when the team leaves town, as opposed to losing the NFC Championship game.

Romo's better than Grossman
on his very worse day. You're Bears are very overrated and will lose to the Saints.

by Terry @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 19, 2007 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

so you're telling us
that grossman's highest qb rating this year is lower than romo's lowest? or are you just iliterate?

by mike b on Jan 19, 2007 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

Good to see you here Terry...
Thought you may have done yourself in after Romo dropped the ball.

Anyway, you can have your Tony Romo cause come Sunday evening Rex will be relaxing and getting ready to play in the Super Bowl while Tony Romo is watching to see who Rex will be facing.

Don't think cause they beat your lousy Cowboys that the Saints are any good.  This is the same team the got pounded by the Redskins.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 19, 2007 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

Furthermore...
Terry,

I will bet you that next year (assuming no injuries) that Rex will throw for more yards, have more touchdowns and have a higher rating than Romo.

by Chad @ Windy City Gridiron on Jan 19, 2007 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

you're on Chad
Considering Romo's numbers this season blew away Grossman's if you would project them out to a 16 game schedule, and that Romo will be much better next season, thats the easiest bet I'll ever win. Name the stakes.

He's third in his own division and Jason Campbell maybe better too.

If you think Eli

Funny how you're judging Romo on a special teams play, just proves his qb play that game was pretty good.
