My Analysis and Grading of Phil Emery's 1st Off-Season as Bears' GM

What's up Bears nation, ECD here, finally returning to write FanPosts after a good 2 months of navy boot camp. I've missed a ton of major moves, but have used some of the free time I've earned to research just what Phil Emery has done to reshape the Bears. Many great moves were made, as well as a couple of head scratchers. Let's see how well Emery has done after the jump.

Article promoted from our fanpost section. Welcome Back ECD, and please enjoy your welcome back gift of a front page spot.

Will Cutler take the throne or is the bar set to high?

Can Jay Cutler return to the promise land? That land I speak of is the Pro Bowl. And once he returns to Pro Bowl status can his name be amongst the options for League MVP. Jay has been smacked around, spit on, talked about, and devalued by the media the last couple years. Even Bear fans have questioned his toughness. But at the end of the day Jay Cutler is one tough son of a b**ch. I have many times defended Jay Cutler as I stood deep amongst non-Bear fans. For a couple years now ive blamed it on our offensive system, the inconsistency of our offensive line, and our lack of receiving corp. But all that goes out the window this year.

I have no more excuses to come up with. I can’t even say offensive line any more. When we don’t address our line with a new starter that means we are happy with the options we may have as starters. Whoever those starters are we do know they are already on the team. Staying optimistic I’ll stick with what Emery and Lovie has said. Getting Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi are like bringing in two rookies. There is only Tackle I saw in the draft that was capable of coming in and starting from day one and that was Khalil. And we all know who the best guard was in the draft. But dammit we are deep at guard and if we can’t get two starters out of the bunch then something doesn’t sound right. Im glad we addressed the needs addressed. And if our offensive line shows up and plays as a cohesive unit will they thrust Jay Cutler into the Promise Land?

This league, no matter how many times you run the ball is a quarterback driven league. Im glad we have Jay Cutler driving this vehicle. Out of all the Top QB’s he is one of the younger ones. Being voted to the Pro Bowl seems to be based on two things yards accomplished and passing touchdowns. To be a League MVP as a quarterback you must have a high number of wins and be playoff bound along with yards and touchdowns on your resume for the year. Since Cutler has been in the league all League MVP’s been quarterbacks. Dating back to 1957 only one Chicago Bear has been awarded League MVP. Walter Peyton had the honor of winning that award in 1977. I think it’s about time a Chicago Bear wins it again.

Analysis: Im excited to know that Marshall and Cutler came into this league together and I would like to think they will go out of it together. Im pretty sure Cutler didn’t like coming into the league being sacked 27 times but I bet he would appreciate that number now. Jay Cutler’s completion % has always been amongst the top dogs and that should speak volumes on his game.

Analysis: Cutler wrecked shop this year. Cutler and Marshall were amazing together and they both earned Pro Bowl selections. One can only hope their reunion will have this type of result. Cutler was sacked and all-time personal low of 11. Wow, wouldn’t that be beautiful to see again. If Cutler got sacked anywhere near 11 then Tice would deserve to win Coach of the Year, not Lovie. I also can’t help but to notice how old im getting. Seems like yesterday when Peyton Hills, Darren McFadden, and Felix Jones came out of Arkansas. We can also make note that Cutler has never had a running back as good as Matt Forte or Michael Bush behind him.

League MVP: Peyton Manning-4500 yds-68.8 completion %

Analysis: Wow, as Bear fans we were happy to finally get what one would call a franchise quarterback. From the team’s perspective they wondered how could they be this lucky. From Jay’s perspective im pretty sure he was an unhappy individual. Yes he was happy to be wanted but went from a team where he had his favorite receiver and two trusted individuals to go along with Marshall. It’s no wonder Jay’s favorite targets were Olsen, Clark, and Bennett. The only receivers Jay had over 6 feet were his tight ends. Jay had history with Earl so that made him a trusted receiver. This is also when the idea came that we would try to make Devin Hester a full-time receiver. Johnny was young so he was still raw. People were wondering why Jay was taking a liking for Aromoshadu. It’s because he was the only one with height out their. And can you imagine going from 11 sacks to 35. Aw yeah, Jay was pissed. To make matters even worse Urlacher got hurt for the year so that put even more pressure on the offense that had no weapons. The media use to say he never smiled. His first year coming in Jay didn’t have too many reasons to smile. As Ed_Brown would say “the year Cutler had audibles he threw 26 interceptions”. I remember this year real clearly, ive never seen so many tipped passes and falling receivers. And when I say tipped I mean the receiver was the one participating in the tip drill. Welcome Jay Cutler, to the land of the midgets.

Bear Food For Thought: I think it’s amazing how the negatives can sometimes be overlooked because of your accomplishments. It is for this reason the Bears didn’t make an attempt to go get Cutler some weapons after the 2010 season. Because Cutler had a decent year and we won the NFC North. The best example of overlooking things in 2009 was the fact that Aaron Rodgers was sacked 50 times. He still threw for 4434 yards and made it to the Pro Bowl though. I don’t ever think I remember anyone saying their line sucked, or they needed to make changes. With that same offensive line minus the right tackle they won the Super Bowl in 2010. Maybe it’s a stretch but that’s optimism for our offensive line.

League MVP: Tom Brady-3900 yds-65.9 completion %

Analysis: To me this was our cover up year. This is the year a change shouldve been made afterwards. Our defense had a very good year. Jay Cutler had good a year. But we still had no weapons and Cutler got killed 52 times. But outside looking in the staff probally thought why make changes after winning the NFC North. It shouldve been after this year that Angelo went out and got us the weapons needed. Taking notice of the high sack total he drafted a Tackle and still turned a blind eye to Cutler’s lack of weaponry.

Bear Food for Thought: When we actually ran an offensive set fit for running the ball we only ran it 373. And when they converted to a finesse offensive set they ran the ball 414. Can you say backwards.

League MVP: Aaron Rodgers-4643 yds-68.3 completion %

Analysis: One thing is clear we definitely need our franchise quarterback. Karma came into play though, and Cutler happened to be the victim of it. This year could’ve been a cover up year too. If Cutler wouldn’t have gotten hurt then there is a possiblity J.A. would still be on staff. But because of injury the Bears brass finally noticed a change was needed. A change that shouldve taken place after the 2010 season. The Trio of our quarterback, runningback, and defense put us in the position to be headed to the playoffs early, but then things started to go down hill. But it is because of that downward fall that we have now become the Beast we are today.

2012 Chicago Bears

Weapons: Matt Forte, Michael Bush, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Earl Bennett, Kellen Davis, Evan Rodriguez, Devin Hester, Kahlil Bell, Tyler Clutts

Analysis: I think we can make the argument that this is best collection of weapons Jay has ever had. Defense will play a big part in getting Jay Cutler to the promise land, and we have a damn good defense.

Bear food for Thought: Lets assume the bar is set at 35 touchdowns and 4500 yards needed to become a Pro Bowler and possibly League MVP. I see no reason why Cutler couldn’t sit at the Top of the Throne. All he needs is 2.18 touchdowns and 281.25 yards a game. I think he shatters that as we head to the Super Bowl.

Is Shea McClellin a Speed Demon?

Dont get it twisted. Shea is definitely a Speed Demon at his position. Yes he has a great motor comparable to some great names in this game. His mental attributes are off the charts. He has been called undersized, but his size is perfect the Chicago Bears scheme. His versatility creates so many possiblities on how he can be used. This kid finds the ball real well, and when he does he makes a play. He reads pressure well and is good at closing the gap. This kid knows how to work his pad level and his ability to bend makes him a formidable matchup. Shea is very instinctive and knows how to play with good leverage. Then his hand play is something out of an MMA fight. Alot of those things are easy to coach up in practice and even after doing thousands of reps its still hard to bring those abilities out in a game. They use to say practice makes perfect. Then i think they upgraded that statement to perfect practice makes perfect. Sounds like Shea might be the perfect example of what to practice.

Yes, during Emery's interview of Shea he spoke of him being a technician at the defensive end position and gave him high praise for his football instincts. But at the end of the day Shea McClellin is still a Speed Demon. No matter how instinctive Shea was if he was slow as dirt he wouldnt be a Bear. A good tell to see if you have some pass rush speed is the 10 yd split. Which is basically the distance you will have to run to get to the quarterback. Shea put some beautiful combine numbers. As Emery said this class was deep in talent at the defensive ends. So their may end up being a couple good ones. But there will only be one Shea McClellin.

When you wonder why Emery picked Shea over other defensive ends just look at this combine numbers. And if you say to yourself these two guys don’t look that much different then think about every other Shea McClellin attribute I spoke of at the top of this paragraph. I think Shea McClellin is a steal of the draft. Yes i said it, a steal. Yes at pick 19. Im glad Shea didnt always have his hand in the dirt at Boise, if so he wouldve been a Top 10 Pick.

2012 Draft Picks in Madden

Hello! I'm hoping to get some help here, maybe some idea's...

I'm a very casual Madden xbox360 player, pretty much always Franchise mode. I'd like to start a new franchise that includes our rookies from this draft, at least the first 4 picks worth. I can do without the lateround prospects for now.

I'd like to know if you guys know the best ways to do that?

Phil's the man! And yes, he does have a plan

My wife told me I had the strangest looks on my face when the draft was finished. She told me that after every Bears selection, I would cringe slash smile all at the same time. Im guessing she was spot on considering that every pick the Bears made were a huge surprise to me. And even to this day I am still feeling a bit odd if you know what I mean. But given some time to settle and investigate our selections, I feel really good about who the Bears added in this years draft.
