Final WCG Mock Draft

I wanted to get your comments on how you think the draft went. Surprised the Brohm is still on the board? Strange that Albert went so low?

WCG Mock Draft - New York Giants

CURRENT SELECTION
Dan Connor
Linebacker
Penn St.
ANALYSIS: Brian Brohm is still on the board eh? If the Giants had lost the Super Bowl there would probably be a considerable push to pick him here. Even with a ring I am sure there will be some people in Giants land who still don’t believe in Eli and there may be some booing on draft day when the Giants pick Dan Connor, LB from Penn State.

From NFLDraftcountdown:

Above average athleticism...Reliable tackler...Will deliver the big hit...Physical and aggressive...Adequate timed speed...Has sideline-to-sideline range...Does a solid job in coverage...Smart with excellent awareness and instincts...Versatile...A hard worker and leader...Intense and competitive with a non-stop motor...Tough...Has a lot of experience against top competition...Productive...Great program pedigree

His biggest weakness seems to be his size at 6’2’’ 231, and he has also been criticized for his mechanical motion and troubles taking on blockers head on. He also has some character concerns, albeit minor, as he made threatening phone calls to a former coaching assistant at Penn State, costing him a few games. I’m sure Coughlin can provide the proper screaming influence.

This pick could also be Jerod Mayo if the Giants do indeed pick linebacker here, but with both of them having similar strengths and weaknesses, I picked the kid and inch taller thinking he would have more of a frame to bulk up. Worth mentioning perhaps that in a similar situation, the SBN Giants blog also went with Connor when Phillips wasn’t available.

Either pick would be solid, and would fill a need for the defending champs.

The Giants are down a linebacker having lost two in free agency, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor; and picking up Danny Clark. Dan Connor is rated as the #1 or #2 depending on where you look. The Giants need help at nearly every position on the defensive side of the ball, and considering the possibility of a Michael Strahan retirement, the Giants stand a good chance at losing "linebacker" Mathias Kiwanuka back to the defensive line.

The Giants could also be drafting WR or CB here, and they also need some OL depth. The future of Shockey will also affect this decision. If the Giants thought they could pick up both Brandon Flowers and one of Mayo/Connor, in the early second round I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try to move up in the second.

WCG Mock Draft - Green Bay Packers

CURRENT SELECTION
Kenny Phillips
Safety
Miami
ANALYSIS: The Packers are in a tough spot in this draft as there have been many linemen and cornerbacks chosen already, both need areas for the Packers. I think they would really like to strengthen their line (especially at guard) to help Aaron Rodgers. While the line was solid last year, Favre bailed them out many times to keep the sack total down and make it look better than it really was. Branden Albert would be exactly what they are looking for as a versatile player who could play guard or tackle in a backup role if not come in and start at guard where they are weakest, but it looks like the Steelers are going to be all over him as they were in our draft.

Cornerback is also a need with Woodson and Harris turning 32 and 34 this year, respectively. If Phillips and Albert are both off the board they would likely go with cornerbacks Brandon Flowers (Va. Tech) or Reggie Smith (Oklahoma), but they can't pass up the draft's best safety at #30. Phillips, a junior, is a big physical cornerback (6'2", 212 lbs). The Packers love physical defensive backs and have 2 of them in Harris (corner) and Atari Bigby (safety). Phillips would not have to start right away as Bigby and Nick Collins are decent starting safeties. His biggest strengths appear to be his strength and speed. He plays both the run and the pass well and really could play either SS or FS because of this. Mental mistakes appear to be a big weakness of his. This could bite him in the NFL as safeties really pay for being out of position, but he does have the speed that has helped him recover from being out of position in the past. From a Bears fan's perspective, it sucks to see the Packers get the #1 player at any position of need for them. That being said, there is no elite safety in this draft so it isn't a pick to be especially scared of. However, his game seems to fit in well with what the Packers have and like, so he could potentially blossom.

WCG Mock Draft - San Francisco 49ers

CURRENT SELECTION
Quentin Groves
Defensive End
Auburn
ANALYSIS: The niners shored up the heart of their defense last year by getting patrick willis, but the ability to stop the run (kind of) isn't enough, they need to be able to get after the quarterback, and putting Groves on the other side of Justin Smith will go a long way to achieving that. Groves knows how to get to the qb, he is tied for the career record for sacks at Auburn and for his size,6 ft 4in 254lbs, he is pretty fast clocking a 4.56 40 at the combine. Some mocks have the niners taking a wr at this spot, which is a need they have but since the top 4 are gone and the niners are picking 10 spots from now they can probably get a wr with the same skill sets then.

Draft News - Zbikowski and Gooden

Bears GM Jerry Angelo is not enamored at all with this year's safety crop, but still is looking people who can help.  Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski is schedule to visit Halas Hall.  At this point safety could be the most likely spot a rookie could see significant playing time.  The Bears secondary has had to rely on rookies many times over the last few years and with Mike Brown and Adam Archuleta still in the game injury and poor play could get a rook soem time.

In a previous interview Miami of Florida LB Taveres Gooden has stated he has worked out for the Bears.  With the Bears linebacking corp consisting of Urlacher, Briggs, Hillenmeyer, Jamar Williams and Michael Okwo it is safe to say Gooden's only real chance would be on special teams.

WCG Mock Draft - Dallas Cowboys

CURRENT SELECTION
Devin Thomas
Wide Receiver
Michigan State
ANALYSIS: If this scenario happens Dallas will be very happy, as still on the board are dynamic playmakers who can also help in the return game with both Felix Jones and Devin Thomas. I think they would go with Thomas because WR is a bigger need than a scant back to team with Barber. With Terry Glenn literally on his last leg and TO being as reliable as an American Airlines flight, they will look to the 6’2’’ 215 pound Thomas to be Tony Romo’s go to for the next decade. Thomas might be the most underrated player in the draft given his speed and size combo that allowed him to be the best receiver in the Big Ten last year with 79 catches for 1,260 yards. He also got Sparty another 1,330 yards on returns and rushing attempts.

WCG Mock Draft - San Diego Chargers

CURRENT SELECTION
Gosder Cherilus
Offensive Tackle
Boston College
ANALYSIS: Offensive Tackle is the one glaring need on the Chargers roster and they select Gosder Cherilus; Offensive Tackle from Boston College. With only this #27 pick in the first 4 rounds, they need to find an Offensive Tackle who is immediately ready to step in and contribute. The Chargers released starting RT Shane Olivea and Cherilus has the size the Chargers love in their Offensive Linemen. His versatility and college experience will allow him to challenge 3rd year pro Jeromey Clary for the RT position, or be able to step in for 4th year pro Marcus McNeill. Cherilus possesses a rare combination of size and speed. At 6'7" and 315lbs. He has a tall, lanky frame with excellent arm length, large, strong hands, a huge wingspan and room on his frame to carry at least another 25lbs. of bulk without having it affect his quickness. He struggled last year after moving to LT, especially one game vs Notre Dame. He is a durable, mauler-type that started 51 straight games and would be best served playing on the right-side; but has all the tools to play either position.

WCG Mock Draft - Jacksonville Jaguars

CURRENT SELECTION
Kentwan Balmer
Defensive Tackle
North Carolina
ANALYSIS: The Jags have had one of the best sets of defensive tackles in the NFL for a long time with Stroud and Henderson. Now that Stroud has been traded, there is a glaring hole alongside "Big" John Henderson.

Defensive End was going to be the primary choice, but the 5th best D.End in the draft is probably not the best bet for a first round pick. The biggest need on this team is definitely replenishing their defensive line, as a whole. That is why I believe Balmer is a good choice here.

Balmer has exceptional height. He is also very strong and athletic. He has pretty good speed and quickness, as well. If paired with a good veteran like Jon Henderson, it should help push Balmer to be as good as possible, as some critics doubt his ability to read plays and doubt his drive. Balmer has the physical tools to be a good fit in either a 4-3 or 3-4 set.
