Positional Review - Wide Receivers

This is a position that has carried a lot of disappointment, and a glimmer of hope.  The hope comes in the form of Hester and Berrian's potential, but that is still a dream.  There are answers in the draft and free agency, but I feel that what we really need is for our players to step up on the team.  Let's look at our current players beginning with the starters, and then going to the back ups, and finally to free agency and the draft.  At the end I will give an opinion of what we should do.

Current Players

On the disappointment end we have high end talents like Muhsin Muhammad who has not been playing near his full potential.  Part of this may be due to his age, and part due to the inconsistent QB situation, but he hasn't been delivering.  More than anything he really hasn't been a factor in the games outside of the first few when Griese started and he seemed to be revitalized.  He came up big against Detroit, Philadelphia, and Minnesota.  Even with those games, he really wasn't consistent this year, and this appears to have come in stark contrast to our 06 campaign when he was always helping us move the chains.  His numbers dropped a bit this year from 60 receptions in 06 to 40 this season and from 863 yards to 570 this year.  TD's were also down from 5 to 3.  His numbers have dropped some and he seems to have lost that "clutch-ness" from the 2006 campaign.  In another disappointment, I thought that Berrian was going to be Robin to Grossman Batman after the 06 Super Bowl campaign.  While he didn't become super dominant and break out as a star receiver he did make improvements.  He went from 51 receptions to 71 and from 775 yards to 951.  His TD's dropped from 6 to 5, but I don't think that is much to complain about.  I am happy with Berrian's continued growth, but he still left much to be desired.  He also has had issues with disappearing during games and dropping passes.  Moose has dropped a lot of passes as well, but his decline has been more pronounced than Berrian.  Berrian improved statistically this year, but still wasn't getting the job done consistently.

Looking at our bench we can see some players who underachieved

Orton Thinks He Is The Man

Rex returning or free agent be damned, if you ask Kyle Orton who the starter will be for the Bears next year and he has your answer.  Himself.

Minutes after wrapping up the season at home, players and coaches already were talking about 2008. Orton's name came up frequently. Listen closely.

"Kyle Orton again did things to help us every time he's behind center," said coach Lovie Smith.

"I think he (elevated his status) but we were all high on Kyle coming into those three games," added offensive coordinator Ron Turner. "Kyle's got a lot of poise, a confidence about him, and he's got a big arm. The guys believe in him, no matter what the situation is.

"He played at Minnesota in his first game, a tough environment, against one of the top defenses in the league, and showed great poise. Last week (against Green Bay), with the conditions the way they were, he wasn't rattled at all. He played great and handled it well."

In three starts, Orton threw for 478 yards and three touchdowns, completed 54 percent of his passes, was intercepted twice and sacked twice for a QB rating of 73.9 -- second best behind veteran Griese.

I appreciate the confidence and if in camp Orton beats out whoever it is the Bears feel fit to bring, then good on ya.

A Run For The Playoffs

This article gives a brief run down on where all the teams the Bears are fighting for a playoff spot are:

However, if the Bears beat Seattle, it would not only provide their first winning streak of the season, but would also put pressure on the three teams - Detroit, the New York Giants and Washington - in front of them in the race for two NFC wild-card playoff spots. All three lost Sunday.

The Bears, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Carolina and Arizona are all 4-5.

"If we take care of business, we know we'll be in good shape at the end of the year," Smith said. "For us, we started this second half of the season. We're in the third quarter and Seattle is up next."

The Bears would lose any tiebreaker with the Lions, who beat the Bears twice this season.

The Redskins (5-4) have home and road games against Dallas, road games vs. Tampa Bay, the Giants and Minnesota, and home games vs. Buffalo and the Bears (Dec. 6) remaining.

The Giants (6-3), who have a history of second-half collapses, have road games left against Detroit, the Bears (Dec. 2), Philadelphia and Buffalo, and home games vs. the Vikings, Redskins and New England.

The Lions have an extremely difficult road ahead after hosting the Giants on Sunday. They have to play Green Bay home and away, Dallas and Kansas City at home, and have dates at Minnesota and San Diego.

Brad Maynard Is Ready To Play

There was some talk coming out of Chicago that the Bears would have to sign another punter after Dirk Johnson, a replacement for Brad Maynard, was also hurt during this past week's game.  Robbie Gould filled in and finished the game.

It was the first game Maynard had missed in 161 games.

Maynard says he will absolutely be ready to start, in game 3 versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Dusty Dvoracek To Fill Tank Johnson's Spot?

The only real position battle that looks to be up in the air for the Bears training camp if you accept that Mark Anderson is a lock instead of Alex Brown is that of who will replace Tank Johnson.

It looks like 2nd year man Dusty Dvoracek will get first crack.

Coaches have expressed to me this is a big opportunity for me, and it's on my shoulders now to go out there now and contribute and show my worth,'' he said. ''They drafted me for my attitude and my motor, and [I'll] just show them those things every day throughout camp, flying around the field making plays and just improve every day.''

He will be competing with free agent pickup Anthony Adams and Antonio Garay.

Dallas To Host Super Bowl In 2011

You want to know where the Bears will be when they try to become the first ever 6-peat Super Bowl champs?

The answer is Dallas.

NFL owners voted Tuesday for the North Texas group, which had Hall of Famer Roger Staubach lobbying on its behalf. The Cowboys' $1 billion stadium seats more than 100,000 and will open in 2009. It has about 27,000 more seats than the other stadiums involved."

The fix is in

ESPN has just listed their power rankings and low and behold they have already given things over to their new golden teams.  The Saints and the Ravens despite having worse records are listed in front of the Bears who come in at #4.

That was pretty much the kind of game the Bears need Rex Grossman to play. Make some plays, don't make mistakes and let the defense or special teams do something special.

FOX keeps it a little bit more rounded, having only the Ravens in front as the Bears are listed at number 3.

For all the talk of a quarterback controversy and what's "wrong" with the Bears, Chicago's 42-27 victory in St. Louis secured a first round postseason bye and improved the NFC Central champions' record to 11-2. Rookie Devin Hester continued his assault on the record books Monday night, scoring his fifth and sixth return touchdowns of the season, an NFL record. With his two returns, Hester became the first Bears player to run two kickoffs for scores in a game. As for all that talk of a quarterback change? Rex Grossman played fine, relying on the run game early to give him a cushion-- and delivering several key passes in the second half. On the night, Grossman went 13-20 for 200 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. We can get rid of the weekly "Just Gross, Man" headlines for now.

CBS also has us at #3.

They are still the class of the NFC. If Rex Grossman can get it going again, they will be the Super team. Devin Hester is special.
