Wild Card Weekend: the best of the CIN-HOU, DET-NO, ATL-NYG and PIT-DEN in-game threads

Megatron's goin' down.....

Plenty of people kicking around on WCG during the Wild Card games... we seem to like to rip on the Lions, and why not? See what you came up with after the jump.

Were we trying to get Jared Allen his record? The best of the Bears-Vikings in-game thread

Josh McCown reconsiders having joined JWebb Nation. Jared Allen reportedly quite a fan.

A last, meaningless game of the season and I was wondering if anyone would show up to play. The Bears sort of did but not as much as WCG; hit the jump to see the best of your jibber-jabber.

Notes, Scribbles, and Things Jotted Down: Week 17, Vikings Edition

Hey man, want to come watch the game at my place next weekend?!

  • Since I missed this last week thanks to travel issues, my thoughts on one Josh McCown. I'm not exactly convinced that he's the answer to the Bears' backup woes - his throws seemed more accurate than Hanie's, but still kind of wobbly. At least he was a little better in putting the ball where his receivers could reach them. Through this three-game trial, he's 35-55 for 414 yards and 2 TDs (the majority of that action in two starts), but his 4 INTs are still somewhat alarming and leads to a QB rating of 68.3. I'm not quite sold on him, but he could be an interesting backup piece if offered a camp spot next season.
  • I think for now we're going to go with "Slow down" on the Kahlil Bell love. 3.2 YPC is not the stuff of starting running backs, especially coupled with the three fumbles Bell's had the last two weeks. He's a homeless man's Forte, but that just won't get it done on a consistent basis.
  • As far as the receiving options go, there was hardly any time in the game where a receiver had a clear spot to get to a ball - Bears' receivers either had someone on top of them or ready to hit them as soon as they came to the ball. If Sam Hurd's old spot opens up again, there needs to be a consistent difference maker installed in the corps.

Bears Down Vikings 17-13, End Season 8-8

Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman (33) celebrates his 22-yard interception return with cornerback Tim Jennings (26) in the first half of an NFL football game in Minneapolis, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012. (AP Photo/Jim Mone)

And that does it for the Chicago Bears' 2011-2012 season.

Things seemed like they'd go the way of the prior five games, as the Vikings charged out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter behind a Ryan Longwell field goal and a Percy Harvin touchdown run. Roy Williams picked up a touchdown catch early in the second quarter, and Charles Tillman picked off Christian Ponder the very next drive for a touchdown of his own.

After heading into the half with the Bears leading 14-13, the Vikings started getting to Josh McCown even more as Jared Allen set the Vikings' single season sack record with 22, a half-sack within Michael Strahan's record. But the Bears' defense played just strong enough and Julius Peppers blocked another Longwell attempt, and DJ Moore intercepted Joe Webb in the final minute to seal it.

Quick, victorious numbers after the jump.

Well, there went the post-season: the best of the Bears' loss to the Packers in-game thread

Edwin Williams ties Roy Williams for number of touchdowns this season, shows him how to react to the Big Brown Thing.

Well, what's there to say? The non-NFL-following girlfriend surprised me with a Bears mug for Xmas, though, so the 25th wasn't a complete washout (they're not exactly available on the high street over here). I'll share with you with a story I posted in the in-game thread which might raise a chuckle; hit the jump to see what else people were coming up with.

The brother (also a Bears fan) was in Florida last week, watching the Packers game with the cheese-supporting husband of the friend he was visiting. The husband yells "C’mon coon!" at the TV and my brother’s thinking "Um…" until the husband explains there’s a guy on the Packers called Kuhn (and he’s white)…

We really miss Jay Cutler: the best of the Bears-Seahawks in-game thread

Rumours that Jerry was trying to sign Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll to be the Bears quarterback were denied.

I got distracted by a roast chicken dinner in the second quarter and the game was going further and further downhill every time I glanced at the screen. What did you make of it? Jump to find out...

Notes, Scribbles, and Things Jotted Down: Week 15, Seahawks Edition

Son, Urlacher is disappoint.

  • Starting off with the Caleb Hanie thing. I just don't know what to think, and I'm glad I'm not in the position to have to manage him. He's shown some decent flashes - running the football, he was solid, made some decent time on the touchdown throw to Kahlil Bell - but his mistakes were as mind-numbing as usual. None of his three interceptions really should have been thrown. On the first one, he had Bennett in the flat and he could have gotten it to Davis sooner, instead of waiting to air it out into double coverage. On the second... Red Bryant was the only guy around. Hanie would have either had to throw it into the ground or throw it far out of bounds, or take it down for a sack. Instead, he tried to wing a throw out there and it was caught. No chance on the Browner interception either.
  • Tim Jennings was benched, after we finally thought we had a decent CB2, and was benched for good reason. The deep pass play to Obomanu in the third quarter was squarely on Jennings. The Bears were in Cover 1 (Steltz came up) and Brandon Meriweather was alone in the middle of the field. Jennings can't let his receiver get past him that easily, especially to the outside - Obomanu gets that release, and it doesn't get much easier for Jackson to hit him.
  • The Johnny Knox injury is a rough blow in and of itself, and we wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. From a football standpoint, however, it leaves the team in a bit of a hole. Hurd is gone, Hester was already being scaled back, and now Knox is gone. That leaves Roy Williams, Dane Sanzenbacher, and Earl Bennett, plus about half of Hester. So with two games to go, do the Bears look at Kris Adams from the Minnesota practice squad to fill the blank? Who would you guys like to see the Bears go after?

Nothing To Really Say: Bears Lose to Seahawks 38-14

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie (12) is tackled by Seattle Seahawks defensive ends Chris Clemons (91) and Anthony Hargrove (94) in the first half of an NFL football game in Chicago, Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast)

Well, at least the first half looked promising?

Marshawn Lynch put the first points on the board with a rushing touchdown, and the Bears countered with an Israel Idonije fumble recovery in the end zone to tie it. Caleb Hanie then threw a deep interception and followed that with a touchdown toss to Kahlil Bell, and the game went into the half 14-7.

Unfortunately, it went downhill from there pretty quick. Hanie, in a toss reminiscent of the NFCCG, hit defensive tackle Red Bryant for an easy interception touchdown, and later was picked by Brandon Browner for another interception touchdown. Josh McCown replaced Hanie with five minutes left in the game and was promptly picked off himself as the Seahawks ran away, 38-14.

Hanie continued to show flashes, but those flashes were almost instantly erased - like watching Rex Grossman, except his fluctuations occur from drive to drive and play to play. It'll be interesting to see if Hanie continues to start next week against the Packers or if he is benched in favor of McCown or Nathan Enderle. Tim Jennings was also benched for a time.

A couple players left for the game with injuries. Johnny Knox left early in the first with a back injury and Chris Conte was removed with an ankle injury.

Quick, disappointing numbers after the jump.
