Englewood, CO (Sports Network) - Fullback Cecil Sapp, a staple of the Denver Broncos' offense for each of the past three seasons, was placed on injured reserve Saturday, and 17 others were cut as the team reduced its roster to the 53-player maximum. Sapp, who was suffering from a hip flexor problem, appeared in 49 games with the Broncos beginning with the 2003 campaign. The Colorado State product played in all 16 games in both the 2005 and 2007 seasons, and started a career-high eight games last season. All three of Sapp's career touchdowns came in 2007. Rookie running back Anthony Alridge (foot) will join Sapp on season-ending injured reserve. Also excised by Mike Shanahan's club on Saturday were offensive lineman P.J. Alexander, safety Josh Barrett, linebacker Jordan Beck, defensive end Larry Birdine, defensive end Paul Carrington, cornerback Wale Dada, offensive lineman Mitch Erickson, guard Dylan Gandy, quarterback Darrell Hackney, defensive tackle Steven Harris, wide receiver Glenn Martinez, wide receiver Marquay McDaniel, tight end Chad Mustard, punter Sam Paulescu, tight end Brett Pierce (waived/injured), cornerback Tyrone Poole, wide receiver Clifford Russell, and safety Vickiel Vaughn. Among that group, notables include Alexander, who played in 11 contests with the Broncos a year ago; Hackney, who was bidding to make the club as a third- string quarterback behind Jay Cutler and Patrick Ramsey; Martinez, who appeared in 12 games with Denver last season; and Mustard, who played in 12 tilts with two starts. Denver will begin its regular season on Sept. 8, when it travels to meet the Oakland Raiders.
