BEARS complete amazing comeback

What are my initial recations after a game that shredded every nerve I have?  Here are a few.

Boy, does it suck to be Rackers right now.

Greatest game ever?

I used to think Urlacher was a football stud, but now I know him to be a football GOD.

Just to properly explain how this game went let me take you through my thought process for what my post would have been.

Before game:

It is nice to see Dikta doing the opening.

Hmm, Leinart is on live wire.  Why do they want to hear a grown man cry?

After half time:

It is nice to see Dikta doing the opening.

Get your seat belts one boys, with the mass exodus from the band wagon you might get thrown around a bit.

After we took the lead:

Screw Dikta, our defense is legendary.

After Arizona got down into FG range:

Screw Dikta, we just snatched defeat from the jaws of victory from the jaws of defeat.

Now that the game is over:

It is nice to see Dikta doing the opening.

HOLY HELL!

I am not even going to get into the stats.  The game going the way it did falls at the feet of Grossman.  He had a horrible game.  An absolute horrible, horrible game.  Sure the receivers dropped a few, but this one is on Rex.

The game ball could go to Anderson, it could go to Brown, it could go to Tillman, but as editor of this blog, I am deeming Urlachers MVP of this game and there will be no vote.

I have so much running through my head right now, I cannot keep it all straight.  I am sure I will have more to say later, but for now whatchu got?

Great win
However, all talk of "Rex Grossman for MVP" is officially over. MVPs do not throw 4 INTs and lose 2 fumbles to the friggin' Cardinals.

Feel very sorry for Leinart. He is an excellent QB.

even the great peyton manning has had the occasional bad game. The MVP talk was probably a little early. That being said, it's one game. He could easily bounce back from this and go back to putting up good numbers.

Lovie made the worst move in the game not going for a 45 yard field goal on 4th and 10 with plenty of time left. It should have cost us the game, if the Cardinals didn't give it to us.

To quote Jack Buck...
I don't believe what I just saw.   Unfortunately, I am a glutton for punishment and will watch these games till the bitter end.  Every once in a while you are rewarded with a night like tonight.  Urlacher, and the rest of the defense, took over that game with 10 minutes left in the 4th.  The last time I ever saw a single defensive player "will" his team to a victory would be either Lawrence Taylor or Richard Dent.  Urlacher did that tonight.  Unofficial stats Urlacher 19 tackles, 11 solo.  Briggs, 15 tackles, 13 solo.  Ridiculous.  For anyone that continues to say Ray Lewis is the best linebacker in football needs to tell me a game where Ray Lewis took over in the fourth to carry his team to victory.  I sure don't recall.

Did you see...
Urlacher miss 1,000,000 tackles.  Including one the went directly to a TD.

Or miss his assignment on the fullback the put the Cards in field goal range?

I love Brian Urlacher but he made a ton of costly mistakes.

uh
4th quarter. Everytime they needed a play he was there. Unless you are a defensive coordinator im not sure how you can say that was his responsibility out there.

but yeah he did miss the tackle where the guy got the TD

urlacher
The first half, everyone sucked on both sides of the ball. Missed tackles were the biggest problem, especially with Urlacher and Briggs both whiffing on tackles that went for touchdowns. But in the second half the defense stepped up under Brian's intensity and leadership. He forced the fumble on Edgerrin that got the Bears within a TD, and the defense got the stop that set up Hester's return.

They were lucky Rackers missed that final FG though.

Yup
Everyone one the Bears missed a lot of tackles.  Even during the last drive in the 4th there was a huge missed tackle (don't remember who it was) that ended up with for a first down when it should have been 3 or 4 yards short.

But there is no question that something clicked in Urlacher in the 4th quarter.  He was clearly a different player, and he actually played like a defensive mvp should play.

Urlacher is often overrated, and that showed through 3 quarters last night.  But he was HUGE, even legendary, in the 4th quarter.  He changed the game.

Go Rex!!!

by big_lowitzki on Oct 17, 2006 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Wow,
This created some discussion.  Chad, I agree.  I guess what I was trying to say is that once Urlacher and the rest decided to show up (with 10 minutes left in the game), he took over.  Not disputing the sloppy play and tackling on the defensive side of the ball previous to that stretch.

by Cards67 on Oct 17, 2006 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

And I dont think
the fullback in the flat on the last drive was his assignment.  Hester was supposed to be sitting in the flat on that side of the field and instead followed a wideout crossing into Urlachers zone.  Hester should have released in route and came up to make a play on the fullback.

Just saw him flip out on espn talking about how the Bears were who they thought they were with several explicitives thrown in for good measure. Simply unreal game, I don't think I've ever been so down and up in one game! Go Bears! That should light a fire under us and that bye week is going to be terrific...

I missed Green's PC...
but on my drive home from where I watched the game every sports radio station's talkshows on my XM basically concluded that Green is gone.  Maybe even before next week.

Leinart isn't the second coming of Marino or anything but they sure did leave the well when it wasn't yet dry that 2nd half.  'Edge' was a bit of a dull blade, obvious to everyone, yet they kept giving him the ball inst/of letting Leinart ice it.  I'd weep if I were a Cardinal fan.

But then, why would I be a Cardinal fan?

That's the problem...
With a team that is not run dominated.  When you dominate in the passing game, its hard to ice the game.  When you dominate in the run, its easy.  Watch the Colts play more and you'll understand.

As Woody Hayes said, (and I paraphrase):

One more thing on Green
I've now listend to it around 3 or 4 times, and it's obvious he's really ripping on the Bears as over-rated.

Yeah, Denny, we had a bad game.  But the Bears didn't ask you to hand it off to Edge the entire second half so he could rack up a whopping 1.8 yards-per-carry.  You f*cktard.  Suck on it.  And enjoy your 'early retirement'.

'The Bears were who they thought they were'
and then he references something about the pre-season game as giving them a glimpse to 'who the Bears were' Shaaaaa!  As-f'ing-if a pre-season game is comparable to MNF, dipwad!  And then he says that 'we let them slip through our fingers', which the sports radio guys think was a swipe at the special teams letting Hester score.

He also said something about 'you guys crown the [bleep]ers if you want to' and then he just melts down.  So he's crying about the press loving the Bears, as if that happens every day.  Gawd I wish he was still the Viqueens coach, I'd LOVE to play his team again this season after a press conference like that.

Translation...
I'm pretty sure he said something like, "You wanna crown them, then crown their asses"

And then the thing about the preseason, i think he was trying to say that the Bears were saying that the Bears were saying that the preseason game didn't matter but Denny thinks it did matter.  And they (the bears) are who WE (the Cards) thought they were (not that good).

  1.  If Berrian makes that catch, we win 40 - 0.
  2.  If we hit Leinhart in the first quarter like Anderson did in the 3rd, we win this game 40 - 0.
Let's just be glad we survived and remember that the longest scoring drive besides their first one was a 49 yard field goal drive.  Minus the opening drive the Cards averaged 12 yards per drive.

We are going undefeated.

Unbelievable
The Bears game tonight was truly unbelievable.  And I'm not just using that word as an expression.  I really can't believe what happened.  If you were to write a fictional story where this happened, no one would buy it.  Way too far-fetched.  It's simply insane that it happened.  Crazy.  Uncanny.

And I know every Bears blogger and fan is going to have a story like this, but I don't care.  This is my dancefloor, and those of you that are reading this can listen to me go on and on for a minute.  A quick minute, as I'm completely exhausted, both mentally and physically.

Let's talk about some facts...  What did we learn from this game?  Chicago is far from invincible.  Rex Grossman still has a lot of steps to take before being considered great.  The injuries on defense, especially Ogunleye are more important than anyone made them out to be, as there was very little pressure on Leinart all night.  Ricky Manning Jr. is becomming a very important part of the defense as well, being that he's great at jumping routes (as shown in the Seattle game).  The Bears still don't deal well with lots of media attention.  They played a bad playoff game against Carolina last year, and did likewise again.  We still don't do so well against top tier receivers.

That all being said, good lord.  Games like this don't happen very often, and they probably happen to your favorite team even less than that.  Mark asked me today, several times, why I was so adamant about watching the game live (even if it meant watching commercials).  I didn't have a concrete example as to why, but this game is about the best I can describe it.

Just like Jem, it was truly, truly outrageous.  The depths of the first half were crushing.  Our vaunted defense was getting carved up by a pretty-boy rookie, just like in pre-season.  Pro Bowl players were whiffing on tackles.  The next big thing, Tommie Harris, was pretty much invisible.  Hell, even Edge James was rushing for chunks of yardage.  Rex looked bad, the receivers couldn't bail him out, and the ground game was mediocre at best.  It looked like the pre-Lovie Bears.

The at half-time, the coaching staff must have done a good job at firing the team up, because there was a renewed intensity.  The O-Line started stepping up, and we drove down field.  Then everything stuttered again, and we settled for three.  The Cards get it back and after a tough roughing the kicker call, answer with their own three.

Then fantasy land starts.  Rex throws yet another INT, but we score on defense.  Then Urlacher strips James and we score again, then Arizona's punt coverage team decides to suck and lets Hester have all the room in the world.  But of course there was time left on the clock, so Arizona drove into what should be easy field goal range for Rackers, who is wide left.  Unbelievable.

I was jumping up and down, and screaming at the top of my lungs.  I called people up (sorry if it was you) and screamed into their voicemail.

In my delirious state, I vaguely remember hearing stuff about this game being record setting, but don't remember exactly.  Grossman had like negative five or six fantasy points.  And we won.  He turned the ball over six times.  And we won.  His QB rating was 10.  And we won.  Winning without scoring an offensive touchdown is so 2005, but no one seemed to care tonight.

To use a baseball analogy, when a pitcher has a no-hitter, there are always one or two defensive plays that are just amazing, which keep it alive.  This Bears team is magical.  This game will go down in the books as being truly remarkable.

Bear down.

Shades of 1991 Bears-Jets MNF game:
I think I even called this in the chat room before Rackers kicked the snap-fu at the end.  You fellas remember this?

Link:
http://www.bearshistory.com/seasons/1991chicagobears.aspx

Despite a 28 completion, 303 yard performance by Jim Harbaugh, and nine-catches by the clutch Tom Waddle, the Bears trailed the Jets, 13-6 with less than a minute left. As was beginning to be common in 1991, Chicago couldn't maintain a solid running game. Fullback Brad Muster had left the game early after re-aggrevating his hamstring injury. So New York settled in to run out the clock. Steve McMichael had different plans. He stripped Blair Thomas of the ball, and Chicago had the ball back in their own territory. Several plays later, Harbaugh, Waddle, Davis, and Anderson had the team 3rd down and inches from the Jets' one yard line. The QB attempted a sneak from the shotgun formation, and was stuffed just short of the goal line. With time for one final play on fourth down, Harbaugh rifled a pass in the flat to Neal Anderson....TOUCHDOWN! as time expired. The game went into overtime, and New York drove down the field to attempt an easy, game winning field goal. Not much of the crowd had left, despite the situation looking grim. In another freak twist of fate, the Jets blew the field goal attempt. Fate gave Chicago one more shot, as time was winding down in the extra period. Several passes later, Harbaugh hit tight end Cap Boso on a rollout, Boso was driven over the goal line, popping up with a face full of sod. The Bears had one the game, and they headed into the locker room full of jubilation....or so they thought. The officials ruled Boso down at the one-yard line, and the players were called out of the locker room to get back on the field. Finally, Jim Harbaugh scored on a sneak, and the Bears had won a game they shouldn't have by the score of 19-13. The team was 4-0.

Except now they're 6-0, and have got a bye week to recover.  The beer tastes good tonight, folks.

Yeah, good catch ..
whomever the writer is there got it right at the end ("won the game"), but then indeed messed it up earlier.  But, yeah, cutting and pasting.

BTW, that '91 game, I was a sophomore in high school, and it was a school night, and I had an early class the next day and I remember it was such a late game anyway (MNF started around 8:10 Central), and I remember being so f'ing pissed that I had stayed up until, like, midnight, and they were going to lose anyway after I'd watched them through OT.  Before that missed FG, I shut the TV off and went to bed, but then I was so pissed that I turned on the radio and WGN was saying how unbelievable it was that the Jets had missed the chip shot.  I was like, WTF?  So I went back out and watched them go back down the field and win.

Needless to say, I was tired, but happy, the next day at school.

My thoughts...
in no particular order:
  • Nice of the Bears D to show up in the 2nd half, horrible tackling particular by Lance Briggs.
  • I would have benched Grossman to start the 2nd half, so I better hope this helps his confidence the rest of the way.
  • Lovie Smith is a moron. 9:25 left, down 13 and he goes for a 4th and 10 instead of a FG. Stupid. Absolutely fucking stupid.
  • We should of run the ball more early when it was obvious Grossman took stupid pills before the game.
  • Grossman owes Urlacher and Hester about 5 steak dinners, no matter what Chad says.
  • Amazing game, but we're going to get trounced in New England and against the Giants and maybe against the Jets if anything like this happens again.
GO HESTER, poor Cardinals fans.

Running Game
The Bears NEED to run the ball more.  Jones had something like 6 carries in the first half.  I like Rex Grossman, even after a game like last night.  But Rex cannot carry this team without a running game.

And where the hell was Benson last night?  He had a strong game last week and was ingored this week.

I will say it here - Benson is and will be a significantly better running back than Thomas Jones.  He clearly has an explosive factor that Jones can't dream about.  He needs to see the ball more.

Go Rex!!!

Before Neil Rackers lined up for the kick, I paused my Tivo.  I looked at my wife and said, "This kid, Rackers, went to Illinois.  So I expect him to choke it like the Illini he is.  I expect him to go Luther Head and with the game on the line, CLANG."  (We are both Illinois Alums).

okay, so I have a few things to say too
-player of the game...urlacher/hester...where I was you could just see hester was gonna break one, and I told my friends, here it comes, TOO SOON
brian was everywhere

-goat of the game (bears)...grossman/briggs...rex was awful, and we still won (karma, wow)...briggs didn't wrap at all in the first half

-so who had the chi def in fantasy? unbelievable

-thank you neil rackers

-i remember mike vick's first game when everyone was calling him the next great thing, urlacher brought him back to earth...leinert, however,  is the next great thing....he is gonna be a stud, he showed poise, fearlessness, and smarts

-i hate using the word destiny, but this game reeked of football gods playing for chicago, even with every call going arizona's way

-i am stunned, you don't see what we just saw every day

-thank god for the bye week

this wasn't some sort of early trick-or-treat gag for halloween? where the danville dipsticks show up in bears gear for the first half, dig as big a hole as they can, and then turn it over to the real live genuine chicago bears in the locker room at the half?

random thoughts:

when will this club commit to running the football?
did the bears spend too much time this week reading papers and listening to talk radio that they will not lose a game for years to come?
is hester going to turn out to be randle-el, only better?
would it be a good idea to leave thomas jones behind in arizona?
did ron rivera go ballistic at the half?

by dc60123 @ Windy City Gridiron on Oct 17, 2006 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

I knew they'd win and stayed up to prove it.
First off Grossman is still a young QB. He was forcing shit down field and not throwing the under route. He has 2 weeks to learn to "take what they give you" and to "stop the bleeding" as Joe Thiesman said. He did everything to lose the game whereas Matt Leinart did everything to put his team in a place to win.

In a word, the Bears got lucky!

Arizona Defensive coach should get mad props for this game. He had his squad ready. He had a plan of attack, which was, get to Grossman and force the Bears to run the ball. The Bears didn't. They kept throwing it up. The Bears coaching staff needs to make the adjustment or they will lose. The template to beat the Bears was made tonight. I hope the Bears make the right adjustments.

Shortly after Kornheiser said the Cards should give the stadium back if they lose this game. The Bears get the fumble and make it 17-23. Then the punt return was priceless. Stunned Silence in the booth.

Charles Barkely in the booth knew the Cards were gonna blow this. The look on the Card's faces told me to stay up and watch. I saw fear.

Urlacher was vibrating. I was scared he might jump out of the TV and tackle me while going to the bathroom.

It's a win. It wasn't great and the Bears still need to work hard to be Super!
